MM 965 was the very first English style blend I smoked back in 1970.

Definitely unequivocally neither! A number of years ago I enjoyed 965, now I rarely ever smoke it. Royal Yacht and me never got along!
My two favorites that I’ll miss is Nightcap and Dark Flake, which with all my other tobacco’s I have enough 👍👍

This is funny - when I started hanging around pipe forums a few years ago, RY was one of those "love to hate" blends. Not quite at Mixture 79 or Cap. Black Grape level, but close. Surprised to see so many dedicated followers, and I'm sorry for your impending loss! Personally, I thought it was pretty horrible.

Reason I asked is cos I'm going to buy one of them this week for this month's purchase (I know, I'm going wild, but funds dictate)
I couldn't decide which blend to go for so I thought I'd let my good friends at the patch decide for me.
Thanks to all who voted. I'll purchase some royal yacht tomorrow.

Get the Ry AND the MM965 ! ;-)
MM965 is most definitely my first love. That's why I have a 10 YO tin of it with me where ever I travel, as a matter of fact, I've been outta town this week and just got up to my hotel room after having a couple of bowls of MM965 out on the veranda.
That being said, RY is never my first smoke of the evening. I prefer to ease my way into the bolder / fuller bodied tobacco. MM965 fits the bill for this. It's like an old friend welcoming me into my evenings piping endeavors.
RY is a great smoke, to be sure, but not what I start off with.
Do yourself a favor and definitely try both.

Having smoked both 965 ( and still keep a tin available to smoke) and Royal Yacht ( for the last 20 years) I would say try both! Take it easy when yu start off with RY as it does have a bit of a heavy nic hit which can be off putting to some. If you inhale while smoking I would strongly suggest you DON'T with RY ! |
