Been looking into this. The filters are extremely cheap. I am not sure how the air flow works, and I don't want to be sucking air and smoke at the same time. That seems to foul my tongue.

I have a few of their pipes and they all smoke great. The filter is a pain, until it gets wet you have to puff and huff because it draws air through the holes in the stem, after it's wet it smokes well. I just covered the holes shrinkable tubing and use it as a non-system pipe.

Versions made in England and Greece are an upgrade and there are some Israeli Briar examples. I did not care for the system and the stems are on the cheap side.

Personally, I never enjoyed any smoking E. A. Carey Pipes. I agree with Mike above, cheap thin soft stems.

Several years ago I was gifted one and have found mine smokes pretty good. Not sure I would buy one though. AJ

The briar can be good. I'm not knocking the stems on them, just reporting fact. They are comparable to Missouri Meerschaum and your locked into another filter system, though as mentioned, that can be covered with tubing or even tape.

Anyone wants to try one, I have several that I am considering selling. This is not a 'for sale' post, just saying that I have several of them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them at all, they smoke great. It's just that I don't go for the filter gimmick that requires you to order and re-order filters, just as with any other type of filter pipe. Some of the briar on these are top notch.

If you tape the holes no filter is necessary. My friend makes balsa filters for moisture and tar, he tells me it works for him.

Doesn't the extra air get in the way or does it blend in with the smoke? I mean, I don't want to go back to my old days with the bud, sucking in air and smoke at the same time

I have two in my collection, and it's an interesting concept, but I couldn't really tell if it did anything or not, to be honest with you.
The only way to know for sure would be to get two identical pipes, one with the "magic inch" and one without, go back and forth between the two, and compare.
Otherwise, most people's assessments are going to be pretty subjective, I think.

I’ve seen a few with a real nice piece of briar, I could never understand why such a cheap thin stem was used. If I ever noticed one at our local flea market that had an interesting shape, I’d purchase it if the price was right and make a new stem, magic inch gone!

Heads up, zambini! I bought a used Carey Bent Apple that came really clean. I had some filters here already. I took some C&D Nutty Irishman and packed it. It was moist and should have had some dry time. I have no time for such trivialities. It did take a few relights right off the bat, but smoked all the way down after that. What I was looking for was to see if this was like sucking a straw or a joint with air coming in on the side. This was not the case. It did draw differently, but pleasantly. The smoke remained cool. More importantly, the flavor, which usually goes to hell on a moist aro, stayed from start to finish. I seldom get that on an aro that I DID give time to dry. The filter didn't change color on the outside, so I am going to see how many smokes I can get out of it. The stem was in between cheap and expensive. It will not wear out like an MM. It comes on and off so easily that I wondered if it would come loose. It did not. It's just the way it's made and it beats the snot out of those that swell up so badly you can't remove them. Bottom Line: This is going to be my ARO Pipe when I want to get full flavor. I will buy more for the same purpose. My apologies for not saying anything stupid in this post. It's early here. I tried

I tried Trivialities are the spice of life. I wonder if it works without the filter? I didn't love the Falcon pipe some others recommended on another thread but I'll see if I can get one of those Carey pipes and give it a go. It sounds like it corrects poor technique which works for me.

Ok, you guys are some kind of enablers all right! Now I had to go and find one to buy. I think it's an older one because it's stamped with a patent no. and is made in England. I also got a box of the filters, total damage for both, $17. I'll report on what I think when I get it. David, so you think you didn't say anything stupid? We will see, we will see...

orley your retort has me so stressed I feel as though I have been left up the proverbial estuary without any conventional means of locomotion... and I still don't have anything stupid to add. However, I am on my second bowl in the Carey pipe, which I note is more of a bent billiard. I lost my glasses today and didn't look it over that well. I am smoking Sutliff State Fair from SP. P&C has the exact blend but under another name. The only thing I did was wipe out the bowl. I am getting wall to wall mild apple in this blend. It is staying with me through the bowl. I am absolutely amazed. I think I am done here. I want to finish this bowl while listening to the Archies' Sugar Sugar backwards, over and over.

David ^^^^^^^^^ have you ever preformed as a stand up comic? If not you should👌👍👍 It's really hard for me to speak to crowds, well, sober at least. When I was a kid I didn't relate well. At some point I quit caring about relating and all of the sudden became funny. That's answer #1 #2, Legend Lover hit on in a message. My humor, if you can call it that, takes my mind off of constant pain. I'll leave you to judge. I can say no more
