Looking forward to you moving ahead on the path, if you can arrange some shop time with other carvers, I think that it can help reduce the bumps on the road...I have heard as much from other carvers....the pipe shows offer a great opportunity to network. Pretty cool of Robert to give some great advice. Yeah, I've been looking for a local Carver, since I don't think I'll be able to get to a show - unless there's one close to DC. And, yes, Robert and Slowroll have been huge helps in getting me going. They're generous in spirit, and very happy to give advice and answer questions. So happy to have them around these parts.

Something else you'll run into are otherwise decent pieces of briar that have triangular chunks cut off at corners to remove bark and faults. To square them so they will hold in the chuck I glue pieces of triangular briar or even cuts from a 2 X 4 on to those areas, then cut square on the saw. Those glued pieces are cut off after all the lathe work is done.
BTW, for some scary saw work, watch some of the briar burl cutters at work on Youtube. Monster circular saws with no guards just shoving those bucks thru. It's actually a wonder that they come out as square as they do, with no finger parts stuck to them.

I think you mentioned it in a pm, but I didn't fully understand what you meant. Thanks for clarifying. Almost all my blocks have diagonal chunks missing. Ive been trying to square them up on my bandsaw (I have a decent Grizzly), but I need a finer blade. Gonna get one on my way home today. As for the briar cutters, the first video I saw I was just waiting, muscles tensed, for something horrifying to happen. Those guys are off their rockers. Not only the threat of losing appendages, but that stuff could kick back cause serious bodily damage!

Maybe there's a reason why Morgan bones are so-called. 😉
