Because of the Algerian/French wars, ( Algeria was a French colony and after many decades of fighting finally became independent ) production of Algerian Briar ended in the late '80s. You can't get it anymore. It's certainly lighter, and also harder in feel. Algerian Briar is softer than other species which is why Dunhill used it for their Shell series. If you look at any Dunhill Shaell made prior to 1968 you'll see they were very "graggy" with pronounced grain which was due to the softer Algerian briar used. When they stopped using Algerian Briar they started double blasting to get the same effect they got with the Algerian briar. Supposedly when Alfred Dunhill first saw a Shell pipe he is supposed to have said "... we can't sell those here (England) but the Americans will buy them." He was correct and they only marketed the Shells for the US at first. With the deep blast achieved with the Algerian briar some of the production shapes they used it on were drasticaly changed and that's why he thought the british would not like them. He was wrong, as every one LOVED 'em !! What's interesting is that Edward's did not make many blasted pipes ! I have only two in my collection a 720-L bent bulldog and a 730-L Coachman both bought in the late '70s early '80s at the old Dallas store on Preston Rd. Sorry for the long ramble !

I, too, have a Edwards Coachman 730-S with a 7 on the bottom of the shank. I also have a large billiard Edwards a 700-L that I only smoke if I have at least an hour of more because of the size of the chamber. Both are courtesy of AJ, a fine friend. Both are excellent smokers because of the oil cured Algerian briar. You just can't beat an Edwards. Right, Michael?

NICE,NICE ! Is your 730-S stamped Algerian Briar?Β Yes it's algerian alright, all the Bentons usually were. imgur.com/gallery/r0AvSroIts gotta be a great hunk of briar to be an Edwards, and that proves it.

Seems the Benton pipes started being made in the '90s after I stopped going to Edwards as they weren't a model available back in the '70s. I found this about Benton pipes and thought it might be interesting. it's written by a former employee of Edwards. pipesmokerunlimited.com/showthread.php?3737-BENTON-PIPES

Smoking an Edwards 730-s coachman, and wondering how they came up with such a wonderful shape in the first place. Its got a dignity to it all its own. imgur.com/gallery/r0AvSroThat shape is so signature to edwards, I'm glad to own one.

I think with all the folks on this forum we could corner the market on Edwards pipes. Try to find one you'll be glad you did.

Hate to cut in on Lonecoyote's Edwards finds but im interested in edwards hard to pin down philosophy of pipes. Ed and Smitty's philosophy back in the '70s and '80s was to give the best pipe for the best price. From what I've seen of the newer Benton pipes I'm not sure this is the same and other than 1 or 2 stores, most of the Edward's I've been in in the last few years are basically cigar stores. Things change !
