Hi One pipe line that comes to mind is the gold banded Weber Deep Grain line. I remember reading somewhere that at one time they sold for the same price as the Dunhill Shell pipes. Deep Grain's are also inexpensive to purchase today. PS I believe GBD offered a nice range of pipes. Still among their offerings, the Unique line stands out. The problem is I am not sure GBD Unique's can be considered as a hidden gem. They still garner allot of attention as seen by the prices they sell for to this day.

There are many gems in the estate market, especially the seconds from the big names. GBD's City de Luxe and Digby to name two. I think most of us can name several under-the-radar makers of new pipes as well. Mastro Beraldi come to mind. An interesting and thought provoking post. Thanks for introducing the topic.

I really like estate Savinelli Estellas. They started out as potential autographs but had some cosmetic flaws and received a deep rustication. They were carved from some of Sav's oldest briar at the time (1970) and with the deep rustication makes them very lightweight for their size. The rustication looks fantastic and is very distinctive, You can pick them up a lot cheaper than even the lower grades the autograph line (4's and 5's).

Another marque you may want to look at are the Mountbattens. They were made by the apprentices at Charatan and were made in the same style as their standard lines from the same briar as the Charatan pipes . They were NOT SECONDS but first grade pipes from the Charatan firm. They smoke the same as Charatans and the relief grains, blasted, pipes were some very nice blasts. I have 5 of them and am always looking for more !

I have seen Mountbattens and will attest to their value. My personal preference is Old England, a second line from Sasieni. Very nice pipes.

I have a thing for Estate Stanwells. Not that I have any, but I think they're beautiful. Not sure it's a hidden gem.

The Stanwell pipes that were made in Denmark are superb smokers. The Stanwell pipes that are being made in Italy now are still of high quality and craftsmanship......I own 2 made in Italy and they are excellent smoking pipes ๐๐๐

Lots of angles to look at this question from. Smoke wise, cost wise, beauty wise, etc. Most 2nds from big name Co's are a great value cost wise.

Lots of angles to look at this question from. Smoke wise, cost wise, beauty wise, etc. Most 2nds from big name Co's are a great value cost wise. Yes the question is a bit open and that is fine. I have no problem with folks writing about their hidden gems of all stripes. The original intent was to name hidden (less commonly known) pipe lines that were designed to be somewhat unique, special (in terms of workmanship, quality, finish, good smokers etc.) compared to their brothers in a given pipe company; a line or lines that can play with the big boys that might be considered out of the ordinary for the company. I was hoping my two examples would make things clearer. Both Weber Deep Grain and the GBD unique were the highest expression of each company at one time. They attempted to compete with pipes typically above the range of their other lines etc. (The issue I had with naming the GBD Unique pipes as an example, is can it be considered "hidden"?). There are others like the rare Kaywoodie handmade Danish style freehands. Considering the above comments, I am sure folks will benefit from even a loose interpretation of the threads intended purpose. So what are your hidden gems?

I have a pipe stamped Old England London Made in all caps...a tremendously wonderful smoking pipe if I had to rid myself of every pipe but one, this would be it.

qmechanics, I guess its an opportunity to look for through pipe reference sites. Yes I agree and have done quite a number of searches in the past. Today, I have more pipes than I really need. So I did not start this thread with an eye towards purchase but in the hope that others might benefit.

Well we all know of Edwards pipes. They appear in antique stores, pipe lots and individual auctions. But amongst their various lines there are the pipes stamped Handmade. Typically Edward's Handmade pipes are freehands (made to compete with the Danish invasion in the 1960-80s). One can find really odd shapes to the inspired, including pipes that followed more traditional forms (not as common). They are made of Algerian briar, oil cured and use only natural finishes. A number of Edward's Handmade line of pipes were also fairly expensive back in the day.
PS American pipe carver Randy Wiley received his start at Edwards. If you see the Wiley feather, chances are Wiley carved it (Not to say all his Edwards creations had the feather.).

One hidden gem I can think of is the Heritage line of pipes made by Kaywoodie. These were flawless pipes made to compete with the high end pipes of the day. Made from the early 1960s to about 1970.

Only the pipes from the best apprentices made it to market on the Mountbatten brand.

On eBay Looks like that one sold for $60. And per the description, had a replacement stem and some light bumps and dings. Interesting. I have one, almost pristine, with the original Mountbatten vulcanite stem in almost flawless condition. My wife found it in a thrift store for $5.
