I don't know your name. If I had more time,I would. I have no excuse for that. The three minutes we spent together, was the most meaningful, and memorable part of my day. I'll never forget it, or you.
You sat, relaxed, but well-mannered and absolutely respectfully, against a tall concrete building, in a concrete city, just another, one of mans manifestations of itself. Immediately noticed two things about you, you were more aged. by about 30 years or more, and with a face that could tell a thousand tales ore more, and a very stately, handsome white beard. So I approached my questions carefully.
"What is in your pipe, Sir?"
"Borkum Riff."
I showed him my Peterson, still in hand, that I had been smoking in, on the way in.
"thats good. I like Borkum Riff.", I replied.
"Its getting harder to find," my friend told me. But he had his ways and means of his own of procurring his smoke, so I left that comment rest.
"What kind of pipe is that?"
"Oh, I have no idea. Here, look at it,"
I held a beautiful Peterson pipe in my hand, one of the finest Ive ever seen, of the saxophone shape. Peterson system. I prefer straight pipes personally, but if I got another bent briar, this would be it.
"How many pipes do you own?"
"TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" - reminds me of my GRANDFATHER rest his soul!!!
"Do you like Dunhill?"
"NAH." Simple answer. He meant it. I told him about how I was moving on from 965 to Old Dublin. He didn't care, and that was alright by me.
"Brotherhood of the briar", I said, and held out my hand.
"Brotherhood of the briar, was his reply, with a firm handshake.
What a beautiful world we live in.

Relationships, that's what it's all about, even the ones in passing; maybe especially the ones in passing.

Tonight, I bumped into an older fellow smoking a pipe, while smoking my own, some thirty years his junior. Our interaction was a lot simpler.
To set the scene, the wife and I were walking home from a restaurant, an hour or so after sundown. A hundred yards ahead, I saw an old-timer smoking a proper pipe. The fellow saw me walking up, and stared me down. Quite an unusual behavior on a residential block in New York City! Foot traffic is common. You would never stare at a pedestrian for no reason. He had plainly noticed my pipe.
As we came up, I said to the old-timer, "Well, that's not a thing you see every day." The old man just chuckled, and returned to conversation with his neighbor.

About two years ago I was chatting with a neighbor near my son’s home. He made a comment “ I always see you smoking a pipe, you must really enjoy it “. I explained how long I’ve enjoyed my Pipes and tobacco’s and I also smoked many cigars throughout my lifetime. He mentioned that he would like to stop smoking cigarettes and might try a pipe one day. A few days later I decided to give him his very first new pipe. It was a new block Meerschaum, along with four different tobacco’s that a newbie should enjoy. With that I gave him enough pipe cleaners and a Czech tool. Roughly a week later I noticed this gentleman walking up his driveway, he looked down as if not to notice me. Yes, I’ve seen him a number of times since. Now for some odd reason he totally ignores me! Guess he didn’t enjoy the pipe, to this day I’m totally dumbfounded!!
“ Dog is definitely man’s best friend “👍👍👍

If they express an interest, I point them to a MM cob and invite them to try tobacco with me. I would rather gift tobacco to people that have a propensity to enjoy it and having skin in the game... not knocking your attempt, I have been there too, but I don’t want to gift to an unappreciative type.

Charlie, the guy did not seem unappreciative, he was very thankful. But, I did learn my lesson!!

I hear you... he may come around eventually... if the opportunity presents itself, maybe you can sit with him and offer some advice, maybe he packed it wrong and had a bad experience?
That is where an invitation to visit a pipe club meeting might help.

That's a great story, unknownpipesmoker. I've had a few chance encounters with pipe smokers, but never while I was smoking my pipe. I'm patiently waiting for that time to come.

The pipe recipient avoids me like I’ve got the plague, at this point I don’t care to have any type of discussion with him in the future. He’s a “ weird “ one!! I did offer my help originally when I gave him everything. He commented...” I’ll watch a YouTube video “! At the time it didn’t cross my mind, now I realize he’s an introvert.

Nope, his wife actually thanked me for helping him quit smoking cigarettes. At this point I no longer care! Who knows what’s going through his mind.

Cause he is an ungrateful S*B...and I don't even know him. But I digress...this isn't really about him. It's about a positive response from one pipe smoker to another.

I think it happened about a year ago. I was in Blatter & Blatter shop in Montreal looking at pipes. Noticed a younger fella, 30 or so, buying some bulk baccy. When I got out he was standing outside lighting up his cob. I saw him take it apart and pull out a nastiest remainder of a filter I ever seen. Five minutes later I saw him again across the subway rail. "What did you buy?" I asked him. "Some vanilla tobacco" he answered. As luck would have it I had a bag with 1 or 2 oz of 1Q in my bag. "Have you tried 1Q?" I yelled over the noise of announcement. "What is it?" he asked. "Catch" I said and a bag flew towards him. Bag was light, but it made it across the tracks. Barely. So, there we were. Two pipers in a subway with a bag of tobacco flying to the other side.
