Don't forget Elf! Best Christmas film EVER. Iโll take Scrooge for the best Holiday Season movie๐ A Christmas Carol (1984) starring George C. Scott is my favorite version, but Scrooge (1970) starring Albert Finney is good too.

The classic Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone are great, as is the 1984-1991 series starring Jeremy Brett. ๐๐๐ Thanks Randy, I figured Iโd start out with Basil Rathbone in the 1939 version. Itโs on my watch list๐๐ That series uses the same actors throughout the series. It almost became a Stock Company. Great atmosphere throughout. Some people object to Nigel Bruce's bumbling Dr. Watson but I enjoyed him. Owing to the War, Holmes and Watson spend much time fighting Nazis. Fortunately, they were on our side.

Thanks for the heads up, it looks like a fun satirical piece! It would be great fun to watch on a Pipe night at the tobacconist with some drinks.
I would like to be a fly on the wall at a meeting of the Baker Street Irregulars as they discuss this movie, they are probably pitchfork and torch ready to burn the heretics.

The character of Sherlock Holmes will be forever tarnished.
Jeremy Brett will be spinning in his grave.

Would you believe I never watched an episode or movie of Sherlock Holmes......maybe itโs time I do real soon! I am watching a modern sherlock holmes on netflix with Benedict Cumberbatch sherlock very good.. I get that on an irregular basis on BBC America. I think it is good as well. I also watch Elementary primarily because of Watson--best looking Watson ever. It will be interesting now to see if London is large enough for two Holmes and Watsons since Elementary has moved from New York to London.

I know that I sound like an old buzzard, but here goes anyways...
I like to watch Sherlock in the time specific period in which the story was presented in the day of the author...that is why I like the Granada Series so much...masterfully done.
However, I am glad that others can derive enjoyment out of more modern productions, but the nicotene patch makes Cumberbutt a non starter for me... Kind of like watching John Wayne order a Sasparilla at a bar...I would think he lost his testicles somewhere between El Paso and Rio Bravo...and NYC? They don't even allow smoking there....Police Comissioner Reagan on Blue Bloods even had an issue with that....Sherlock would have nothing to do with that rat infested rat-hole.
My apologies to NYC residents.

Jeremy Brett is the only actor to have ever portrayed Sherlock Holmes on film with a real dedication to the character Doyle created. The series was produced by Granada Television out of the UK. They, along with Brett, were very dedicated to putting the actual Sherlock Holmes canon on film...as opposed to simply using the name Sherlock Holmes and/or some of Doyle's story titles like everyone else seems to. Most actors, including well-known portrayals by Rathbone, played a character BASED on Doyle's creation. And those portrayals were often very much unlike anything resembling the Sherlock from the original canon. Some may like other actors' portrayals better than that of Jeremy Brett. But only Brett's version was ever meant to be a TRUE interpretation of the Sherlock Holmes tales. agreed!

I'm not against parody or satire as long as they're funny and clever. But this just looks kind of... awful. Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother was a good one, though. These guys are no match for Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman.

If you're a die-hard fan, it might appear that Will Ferrell and John C. Riley are butchering the good name of Sherlock Holmes. There's a nice-looking calabash in the trailer though. I was excited when I first heard about these 2 doing a Holmes movie, then aggravated when I saw the trailer a week or 2 ago. Then I thought to myself most of the people that watch this could care less about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and dont even know who Basil Rathbone is. I am going to watch this but I am also going to wait till its on redbox or netflix, I told my wife the other day arent goint to watch it in the theater. Which we were planning to do untill we watched the trailer. Oh well, hopefully the movie will be better than it looks in previews. I did like the 2 Holmes movies with Rob Downey and Jude Law, I thought they were a good modern spin on the classic.

Two of my favorite actors to play the roll are Sir Basil Rathbone and Peter Cushing. Before my time but so classic. I second this!

I cant say I have ever enjoyed a Will Ferrell movie, aside form Stranger than Fiction. Just not my comedy style. People must like what he does though, and good for him for finding what he is good at.

George C. Scott was credible in "They Might Be Giants". Cucumberpatch's interpretation is good also but the films are too much for me. Not interested in Will Ferrell's goofiness.

I agree. I thought Step Brothers was terrible. I wasn't impressed with Taladega Nights either. I did likeย Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,ย Everything Must Go, and loved Stranger than Fiction (definitely Will Ferrell's best film). Don't forget Elf! Best Christmas film EVER. Sorry Padre it is not even the best comedy Christmas film that belongs to the film "A Christmas Story".

They are. I think it'll be good, although I found step brothers to be a bit crap. I actually think I walked out of it. I agree. I thought Step Brothers was terrible. I wasn't impressed with Taladega Nights either. I did like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Everything Must Go, and loved Stranger than Fiction (definitely Will Ferrell's best film). I agree that the Reilly/Ferrell pair can be uneven, but, holy cow. Talladega Nights might be the best of the lot. It deserves a re-watch. The frequent improv and chemistry among comics is a big part of it, but the rich texture of gags is also important. Every bit of set and dressing drives home a joke.
It's the greatest Nascar movie ever made.

So my youngest daughter went to the cinema for her friend's birthday party (it's also her birthday today). In case she didn't cope with the film, I went to another film with my eldest daughter. The only one showing at the same time was this one.
It was OK. Nothing special - funny at times and clever too, in places, but not out of this world.
I did notice 4 scenes where a pipe was present...
The first was a bent country gentleman. The second and last (I think) displayed the same calabash from the trailer. The forth was in a gentlemen's club where a man was smoking a pipe in the background, but his hand obscured the pipe so I couldn't tell what it was.
Personally, I would wait until this one comes to Netflix later THIS year.

Sorry guys my daughter and I walked out beyond bad the day was saved by a good lunch at Jasons Deli. Everybody finds humor in different things and ways so don't let my review dissuade you. I give it a solid 2 out of 10 and we all know what number 2 stands for.
