My first experience with this flake. Impressed by the tin note, earthy with leather. Folded three times and stuffed into a small bowl John Blunt Number 11. First impression had me wishing I had waited until after dinner because there is a rich cigar like taste and aroma upon lighting. Smokes cool with no bite. The cigar impression stays with me and there is chocolate with raisins wrapped in leather. Nice and complex. Burns down to a fine white ash. This might be one to take slow and enjoy with cognac, armagnac or maybe calvados, none of which I have on hand.

there is chocolate with raisins wrapped in leather. This statement alone has me adding it to my cart. Thanks for the review!

No one should be disappointed with this one!
I bet it ages well and might have to buy the pound tin to put away.

Tosh.....excellent review and your description is spot onπππ. Iβve been enjoying this fine flake since 2012. Just recently opened a tin from 2013....itβs was a bit more enjoyable then the previous year. I enjoy this flake any time of day. I recently noticed having a side of Southern Comfort or Blue Moon beer at night makes this fabulous flake shine!!!

Fine tobacco. The only thing I smoke not a latakia blend, that's how good it is. Got about 14 lbs, that's how much I like it. Good review, leathery, but no chocolate undertone for me.

Good review. I'm envious of this one. Paddy, can't you get MacBaren in the UK?

Good review. I'm envious of this one. Paddy, can't you get MacBaren in the UK? That's the strange thing. We can, but not the same selection you have. Edit... That's one we DO have. I'm a tit. That's going on the cart for next month. If it wasn't for you, slowroll, I'd have never checked.

Paddy, you won't regret it. My description of it is that it's like smoking Guiness stout, which happens to be my favorite beer.

That might be apter than "chocolate".

Tosh ^^^^^^^^^ now that you smoked HH Old Dark Fired folded and stuffed, take the time and rub it out a bit and add your thoughts after smoking a bowl. For me itβs definitely worth the extra effort. Iβd like your opinion as well, thanks much.

After careful rubbing out, loaded HH Old Dark Fired into a Karl Erik 2SM and ignited same.
My impression is that rubbing produces a hoter smoke with more bite. That could also be from the draft of the larger bowl.
No appreciable changes in the flavor profile, the cigar like qualities remain present. The bitter chocolate fades somewhat into a more preceptible earthy flavor. Spice is still evident. The bowl burns faster but that could also be my puffing. Folding and stuffing requires a more energetic "bellows" to maintain burning.
I seldom rub-out flakes so this was an interesting experiment.

Have always had ODF on hand since 2012. Fifteen pounds in the closet, and consider it and Bold Kentucky an all day smoke. Very good tobacco.

Along with Black Frigate, I reserve it for evenings. It is good to have tobaccos for the times of day.

I have the pre rubbed bulk version of this and it's a great smoke, is it worth the price difference to pick up some of the flake? Previous posts are inclining me to guess yes
