I have the pre rubbed bulk version of this and it's a great smoke, is it worth the price difference to pick up some of the flake? Previous posts are inclining me to guess yes Although the rubbed bulk version is excellent, you owe it to yourself to pick up at least 2 tins. One to smoke immediately and one to age about 2 years. After your first bowl of this flake fresh you’ll most likely be ordering a few more👍👍👍

Old Dried Fish (as it was dubbed by a fellow pipe club member) is a solid favorite in my tobac rotation.
Note to self: You're running a bit low, Ant! Add to next order.

Tosh ^^^^^^^^^ same here👌👍👍. It will be a holiday gift to myself, that’s the only way I can rationalize purchasing another pound. I enjoy the bulk ready rubbed, but the flake version takes this to a complete other level of smoking pleasure.

I smoked a tin of this over last winter and loved it. Your review is nearly dead in line with my own experience. Leather, baking chocolate, and raisin.. I can almost taste it. I just knew I'd be on SmokingPipes.com within an hour of hanging out around the forum. haha

This quickly became my favorite blend. Remarkably cool and satisfying. I smoke it almost exclusively.

After careful rubbing out, loaded HH Old Dark Fired into a Karl Erik 2SM and ignited same.
My impression is that rubbing produces a hoter smoke with more bite. That could also be from the draft of the larger bowl.
No appreciable changes in the flavor profile, the cigar like qualities remain present. The bitter chocolate fades somewhat into a more preceptible earthy flavor. Spice is still evident. The bowl burns faster but that could also be my puffing. Folding and stuffing requires a more energetic "bellows" to maintain burning.
I seldom rub-out flakes so this was an interesting experiment.
I have found it to come too moist. If I squeeze it together and it sticks I let it dry. After drying I havent gotten it to bite from rubbing out. It often burns all the way down without a second light.

I’ve tried the flake folded & stuffed and rubbed out...it’s a bit more flavorful rubbed for me. Don’t forget I’m now smoking a tin from 2013...5 years of aging I’m sure plays a big roll in this case. If your smoking the flake fairly fresh, let air dry accordingly......won’t bite.

Yesterday I rubbed out two flakes and I got a 1 hour and 18 minute smoke with one relight. Later today I’ll Cube cut two flakes and check the burn time.

Gives it more surface area and so find it a much cooler smoke as well.

Never tried it, but got some in the mail to fix that! Enjoy......” GARUNTEED “ you’ll be hooked after smoking your first bowl 👍👍 ODF came in the mail today and I just had my first bowl in a cob. You were right Ted, I like it, a lot. First impressions from a novice: First Flake I’ve smoked that behaved itself right out of the tin. I rolled and stuffed one flake and I’ve been at it for over 20 minutes, with the normal amount of relights. No bite even though it is on the moist side of normal. It split nicely when folded. Smoking right to the bottom and not turning harsh. I’m with slowroll in his earlier post. I’m a latakia guy and it will never replace those blends for me, but it is REALLY good. Earthy, leathery, but not picking up the chocolate or raisin. Could be that the wind is gusting 20-25, so I’m not sure if it’s me, or the wind, smoking this pipe. Lots of flavor, but still very mild. So very latikia like, but with an all together different taste, if that makes sense. I bought a small tin and the 3.5 oz to put away to age. Glad I did. Thank you all for piquing my interest in something I probably would not have tried on my own.

Thank you all for piquing my interest in something I probably would not have tried on my own. Glad your enjoying the flake version of ODF👌👍👍. On you next bowl dry it out a bit and give a light rub then stuff your pipe. Everyone’s palate is different.....I pick up a dark bitter sweet chocolate.....not a sweet milk chocolate. You might notice a sweetness like raisin taste if dried a bit. Some pick those flavors up and some don’t. Personally, I picked up no leathery taste or aroma, I do notice the earthiness of this fine flake. Now that you enjoyed a fresh tin, I will tell you it gets MUCH better with a couple of years of aging. The tin I recently opened is from 2013, that might be why I pick up the dark bitter sweet chocolate. Now whenever you place a tobacco order you can add a tin of ODF!!! Smokes to a fine ash every time.

Crew, someone had mentioned a while back that the square tins are not good for long term storage. Have you guys been leaving it in the tins? Just curious. I have ordered a sample from SP to see if I like it. I am trying to branch out from my aromatics, and you guys have really piqued my interest with this one.
