Pipes have moved away from being the everyday commodities they were in the past and into the collectible market. Prices have adjusted accordingly, but there are still plenty of good deals around if you're diligent in your search and you have a good eye.

I think supply is probably lower than it was back in the day. I know demand is. Here's the thing- Everyone smoked way back when. It was ingrained on social culture. Now days, hipsters buy a pipe and a few tins to look sophisticated. Out of the hundred or so people in my life around my age, ranging from friend-to-acquaintance, only two smoke. And I'm talking about two guys who own a couple Grabows each; For god's sake, my brother was smoking RYO Cigarette Baccy out of his MrBrogg before I gifted him a dozen tins. Honestly I think he is still on the first tin a year later. Very few new pipesmokers that take the hobby seriously. Friends still laugh around me when I smoke as if I'm being pretensious, like there is something inherently rediculous and out-dated about the entire concept. They have no clue how much I enjoy smoking. They'd shite their Jockeys if they knew how many thousands of dollars I've spent in the past couple years. Haha Also millennials are poor, so to hell with pipemakers like Dunhill. Sure they're pretty, but those guys literally sell belts that cost more than my three nicest pairs of boots combined. A Dunhill wallet costs more than my average bank Ballance by the middle of the month. Haha... So when people from my generation want a designer pipe, we head to eBay. Also, part of the tobacco shortage could also be profiteers. That and we know the hobby attracts hoarders. I mean, I'm here. Haha Two years and I already have more tobacco than I could smoke if I live 40 more. Excellent analysis, buddy.

I am part of the resurgent movement.... 5 years ago I picked up the pipe after a 25 year hiatus.

I am a living example of this, that is why in the past I have posted my finds and the prices I have paid.... at some point, I think some take it as bragging or just a bunch of BS, but if you put in the effort, you can reap the rewards. My motivation is to encourage... deals can be had.

Learn to spot the shapes and the other little details and you can find the needle in the haystack.

It is a great development. IMO

...these days, pipe smokers are more "invested" in it as a hobby... previous to the mid-1970s, it was something that a lot of folks enjoyed, but I doubt it was considered a "hobby" by most of them... think of your Dad or Grandfather... they usually had 1 or 2 pipes and smoked the same tobacco all the time... now we talk and write about tobacco as if it was "fine wine"... Hey, I smoke the same tobacco all the time 😊 what are you trying to say! From my observations pipe smoking was on the rise in the 90s. In Columbus there were numerous very well stocked shops. Now there are few shops with very small selections. It could be on the rise and everyone is buying online but from a local perspective it seems dwindling. I ran out of ODF recently and called all over trying to find some. Finally found someone that stocked it. Drove all the way out there just to see the tin was $30. That is what I normally pay online for 8oz. As much as I would like to support the B&M shop it is out of my budget. I think pipe smoking reached its highest points in the 70s but I could be wrong.

There was huge growth in the 60s and 70s due to health fears connected to cigarettes. When it came out that pipes also presented a health risk, most of those men gave it up quite abruptly

I have noticed more pipe smokers lately. I have caught the aroma of an assortment of interesting blends, aros, burleys, and the Latakia smell from some of my favorites. Talked to one pipester a few days ago that said he had no favorite, but smoked and enjoyed everything he had tried.

No, I don’t think there’s a resurgence. I have only seen one pipe smoker out in public in the last 5 or 6 years. Of course, you see plenty of cigarette smokers. I’ve also seen quite a few vapers - all were young people. I suspect the ease of selling on eBay is why many are sold there and why fewer pipes may be seen in other places.

What we need for a real resurgence is a president who smokes a pipe.
Regardless of his politics, half the people will start smoking.
The fedora died when Kennedy stopped wearing a hat, which he did to show off his youthful hair.

The fedora died when Kennedy stopped wearing a hat, which he did to show off his youthful hair. I'll be damned. I've never considered that before, but you're absolutely right. I've always lamented the loss of the men's hat as a common accessory. My grandfather always wore one and always with a feather in the band. He was not what I would call a vain man, but he was very picky about both the hat and the feather.

Smoked cigars since '91, pipe since '97, put pipe down in '13 and picked it back up this summer. Folks at the local B&M started asking me about it and few had pipes at home they got years ago. So next thing I know I was teaching them how to pack various types of tobac and letting them try different blends I had. Now there is about 6 more pipers smoking.

The fedora died when Kennedy stopped wearing a hat, which he did to show off his youthful hair. I am actively working to bring the Fedora back. (not the hipster, cheap-assed Trilby, but the wider brimmed Fedora. I wish I dressed well enough to pull off a nice Homburg, but I think that in other than rare circumstances the Homburg is a thing of the past. Or maybe, I'm just to the point that I don't give a damn, and I need something to keep the sun off of my bald head. ;

I have had Pendleton waterproof crushable fedora with a 2.75" brim for over 20 years. I wear it in the winter.

I am trying to bring back the bowler. ...a decent one in London is quite pricey... I owned a brown derby up til recently. I'd bought it for a steampunk evening, but subsequently wore it on a number of HFT shooting comps. I wouldn't want to wear one everyday, but it was a comfortable, practice hat!

Hats...I have only a Filson rain hat that I bought some 40 years ago...still wear it when it rains (go figure).
I just recently traveled from Tallahassee to San Antonio, Tx. and then up to Kentucky when threatened by a hurricane...in all that time I did not see one pipe other than mine...cigars a plenty and a few cig smokers...so in my world the anti-s are winning...but as some have said...you'll take my pipe from my cold dead hands. (something to that effect).

I prefer the Irish Walking hat. Always wanted a fedora like the one Bogie wore in The Maltese Falcon, but I'd never wear it because I don't dress up in a style that would suit the hat.

I havent owned a hat since my early 20s, other than a knitted winter hat. That was only because the job required it, even with my head shaved, go figure?!
But me and my son decided a few weeks ago, if I ever wear a hat again, it's going to be a top hat. I'm sure I could pull it off.

I wear a hat of some type every day. Aussie Cowboy hat, Western Cowboy hat and mostly baseball style hats with either football or hockey team emblems.
Still, in the four plus years living in NC I’ve only noticed 3 pipe smokers. Two in their vehicles and one walking in a local Park. From what I see pipe smoking is on the decline, sorry to say.......makes me sad.
