Hi all, Are these flakes similar in any way? I can't find Bob's Chocolate Flake anywhere, but I found a tin of SG Chocolate Flake. I think I know the answer will probably be "not the same at all", but I figured I'd ask anyway.

I've heard that there is a difference...don't know what that difference is as to whether one is better than the other. Bob's is pretty wonderful, particularly with some age on it.

All I got from Xuan was that it smelled like Vietnamese Pigtailed Macaque Poo. I couldn't swear it wasn't. I'll be the first to admit it might be my test buds, but I have found no reason to try a second bowl. It comes in handy if Xuan complains about another blend. "Oh, honey, you want me to light up some Bob's Chocolate Vietnamese Pigtailed Macaque Poo?" "Carry on my wayward husband."

The GH has a bit of latakia and an odd "chocolate" flavor but it has been a long time since I had any. It was worthwhile but a mild blend. I dont think I ever tried the Sam Gawith version

G&H has their own uniqueness. That's a good thing, but not really for me. Padre Piper said their peach flavor was the best of all, so I bought some. It was meh (I love getting to use that word sometimes)

The GH & Co. has a Lakeland floral backbone. The Samuel Gawith doesn't. I enjoy both.

I havent tried the SG version, but I was given a sample of GH's. It was the first Lakeland that I ever smoked. It wasnt as strong as some of the others that I've tried since then, but I'm glad I did. As an intro to lakelands, it was great and left me wanting more. The floral note of it is subtle to me, you can tell it's there, but it's not in your face. Sometimes I like that "in your face" goodness!

I just noticed that my comment in the thread antb linked actually referred to GH Chocolate Flake, not SG. "it's great but it takes a few tries to really "get" it, and to accept the fact that it's more like a light dusting of unsweetened cacao powder than chocolate. Same with the Latakia - it's so light it's barely even noticeable."
I just tried it again, with a 9mm filter hoping I'd get more/different flavors out it. I stand by my earlier comments, though now that I've smoked more heavy-hitter Lakelands, I don't quite appreciate it as much. The words "chocolate flake" make me want to actually taste some chocolate, but that flavor is just way too subtle. I'll smoke it when I want a lighter Lakeland than say Brown Flake Scented (my current favorite), but not when I want chocolate (or Latakia). Maybe my palate just isn't fine-tuned enough, and I've ruined it with Islay Scotch, Balkan blends, and goopers!
Still need to try the SG version....

I think that the aging helps bring out more chocolate flavor...mine has 5 years on it and dry it is really good. What Josh had was some of my 5 years age stuff...maybe it lost some of its' flavor, I can't tell since all I have is 5 years old...whatever, I still like it alot.
