Well, I guess I am gonna try it fresh and get another tin for aging...that way I can see both tastes and see which I like better. Has Black Frigate been around long enough to get passed the FDA deeming regs.? It's been around since the late '90s. You used to be able to buy one pound bricks directly from C&D prior to the Laudasi buy out. I've been smoking it for twenty years, and it's great fresh and aged. OK guys, just got a tin...only question left... Permission to come aboard, mates? Damn fine smoke fresh, got some sitting in the cellar for down the road. Thanks for the tip, Duane...now I see what you guys were talking about...like I said, a damn fine smoke.

He's gonna be pissed...he swore up and down he was NOT buying any more tobacco... yeah, right..any way, after trying the War Horse Green Plug...he's gonna be buying that one too. Thanks for the suggestions on the BF. I put half of the tin in a jar and sealed it..got the other half in my daily rotation...but I can see that I'm gonna need a few more tins of the BF. Josh, bring your tin down and we'll smoke outta mine...also got some WH Green for you to try.
Duane...if this has been around for so long...how come it is just now a rage...is this cause you started something going?

Black Frigate works well for me. The smokiness of the Latakia punctuated by the contrasting Rum note is clear.
Perhaps the smokey peaty Malt whisky contributes to desensitizing the pallete to these flavors as noted above?

I wonder has anyone ever produced a Latakia blend with Peated Scotch topping? It seems to me that this might be an interesting blend to try. Bothy Flake

Despite the terrible weather in PA yesterday I was able to wind my way to Philly last night. Our very own Lestrout met me @ my hotel and gave me a ride to the Morley's Pipe Club meeting @ The Pen & Pencil.
Les was generous enough to bring several excellent English blends along for us to enjoy. One of them was Black Frigate.
I loved it.
Got home today and started searching the interweb. Low and behold, I found some and have 3 tins heading my way.
Also had a chance to try Skiff Mixture as well. Loved it also.
And yes, have 3 tins of this coming my way as well.
Thanks Les!

Bring Chasing Embers in on this. He's a fan.
I smoked a tin a year or so ago and really enjoyed it. Since then, I've found a few blends that really scratch my English itch and honestly, I'd like to keep a tin or two on hand, but it will never be a mainstay for me.
Also Sorry, Embers. Haha Just reading through and saw you've already made an appearance.

Just hunted some down. Thanks! Bothy's almost as loved by me as BF. I bought a tin and took it to camp. Soon as I got back to the land of internet, I ordered ten more. Haven't caught in stock since, so I'm glad. Top five for me.

Have you folks that have a tin or more of BF, found a lot of stems in the very fine (cut) tobacco? I keep finding little bits of stem...makes me think it was a bag of something else.

Mine's a crumble cake. Or do you mean that the tobacco that was pressed is finely cut? The stuff I have isn't finely cut. Wait, are you talking Black Frigate or Bothy Flake? Both are BF. I'm referring to Frigate.

I'd say you got a bad tin! I haven't found any sticks, and it's certainly not the consistency of sawdust when I break it apart.

I want to try it.
I think its meant to be simple. Maybe you are just missing the history of it, I don't know. You probably know more about pipe smoking than me but I think this tobacco has its roots in the old blends smoked by British sailors during the victorian era..

I know it has its fans, but just couldn't get past that flavoring. I've heard the Murray's version was a bit different but never got to try it. A very polarizing blend. BR's rum is quite a bit stronger than BF's, but still a very good blend. Go ahead and give it a go, it like BF need no age to enjoy, but both are still great with age. I have a tin of BF from '99 that I never smoked that I am thinking about popping open next year.
