Nathan ^^^^^^^ I only have tins from 2016 and prior. I’d like to know myself if the later tinned Black Frigate is NIT pressed into a proper cake.
I can tell you it smokes good fresh if dried properly. With 3 plus years of aging you’ll notice a difference, a smoother, bit tastier smoke.👌👍👍

Thanks Ted, I was planning on popping the tin in a year to see if I like and then buy more...my normal practice. These days it seems a year can be too long to wait due to the chance that the blend will change or go away. I do like rum blends so really looking forward to it.

Question: I don't watch the youtube pipe community much anymore but I did take a look at a video today about C&D crumble cakes such as BF. They were comparing an old tin to a new tin (2016 and after). The old one was a solid cake like I am used to but the new was very loose and crumbled into almost a ribbon cut upon touching it. Has something changed in the process and will it taste the same? I would think high pressure vs low pressure pressing would make a difference in aging and taste even fresh out of the tin. I have yet to try this blend. I purchased a tin this year at the Chicago Pipe Show at the C&D table. I am just curious what may be going on. This guy is saying it is the same with Pirate Kake, Briar Fox, etc. Has anyone noticed this with their tins and does the fresh tin taste much different? Just curious is all. Very good questions!!! I intend on making a 6-12 ton press (simple materials/equipment) to make up for any questionable difference in production variances.

I’m sure Duane “ aka Chasingembers “ Will check this thread again. Hopefully he knows a friend that popped a tin fron ‘17 or ‘18.
So far ALL of mine have been a very firm cake. A tin from 2013 was so firm, it needed to be sliced more like a plug. No way would it rub out simple. I’ve noticed a few inconsistencies in a few C&D tinned tobacco’s in the past 3 years.

An eminently relevant post! It seems there is a quality control issue with the press/time/moisture/temp/ and maybe baccy issue with the end-game process with regard to cake consistency. A simple phone call may help to resolve the infrequent issue.

Thanks Duane ^^^^^^^^^^ I knew you would have the answer 👌👍👍 Very welcome. Been a decades long C&D fan, and even after the 2016 mold disaster, they're still a great company.

I had serious mold issues in 7 tins of Bijou, it was rectified immediately by Jeremy. Have had no issues since. I smoke MANY C&D tobacco’s. Especially their bulk blends....top shelf products always.

Had ten of moldy tins of Bijou myself, and SPC made everything right as rain without a fuss. Great bunch of folks.

I agree, I love C&D. I remember the days where you could call them up and order right from them. I remember ordering one of their sampler packs and they threw in a sample of their new at the time Kajun Kake. I also like visiting with Jeremy at the Chicago Pipe Show every year. Great guy and dedicated. The leaf change may just not compact as tight in these new cakes but as long as the taste doesn't change no big deal to me any way.
