Whelp...I picked up 3 different bottles (colors) of Fiebing's leather dye and a bottle of polyurethane gloss varnish (water-based) as well as a bottle of leather sheen which gives a durable acrylic finish...to see which of these gives the better results.
I sanded the 2 Legend cobs and 1 country gentleman cob so that the factory finish was removed. Tonight I am going to apply the leather dye to 1 of the Legends...let it dry over night and then apply the polyurethane gloss varnish and see how 1 of them comes out. Sorry I don't have a camera to record the results...if I get the cob looking half of what piffy accomplished, I'll be thrilled. All 3 of the cobs have decent looking "grain/kernels" so we'll see how it goes...maybe I can get my wife to shoot (get a picture) it with her tablet...in which case I'll show you the finished product...warts and all.

After dying is done, sand it with some fine paper 600-800 should be good. It should "bring out the grain", if you will. I look forward to seeing your results!

Thanks, Jason...I hadn't thought of that...so I'll try it. I've got 3 cobs that are dedicated to this project...so I'll try different things to see what results I get. If I can get anything close to what piffy did, I'll be one happy camper...er, piper.

I've stained three cobs the first was a dark brown and the next two was saddle tan...I'm liking the saddle tan the most, but as Jason mentioned, I'm gonna let it dry over night and then lightly sand all three to see what grain/kernels stand out...so until tomorrow...

I'll be interested to see your results. Don't know about that poly seal. On surfaces that are subject to heat and moisture expulsion, it tends to bubble and peel.

Morning all, not real sure about that poly seal, either...gonna read directions once again...see if I missed something in my stupor yesterday...gonna sand the darker one this morning...see what the results look like.

I googled analine dyes, and apparently they are toxic by inhalation. Does this affect the cob modding project? I ask because you guys have given me the urge to customize some of my cobs.

I don't know...but since all pipe carvers seem to use the same products...I'm not dead yet...although my wife might disagree.
Changed the program...used Krylon triple thick crystal clear glaze in an aerosol can...gave it a quick one time spray...waiting for it to dry thoroughly and see what it looks like...meanwhile, good time for a smoke...some butternut burley in an old Grabow Grand Duke...the same pipe that I hadn't smoked yet from WAYS

Figured out how to use the camera function on the tablet...will post pictures tomorrow with better light. Smoked one of the Legends...no bubbling on the surface even after pushing the cob to smoke hot. Still...not as good as piffy can do, but good enough for me...at this point.

Thanks, James...those pictures are just terrible but the actual pipes are great. Now I wish I had more cobs to play with...actually there is one left...but it looks like a refugee from a bad stomach virus...there is a spot where it was trying to burn through...but as I look at it now...there is hope that I can fix the issue and have one more to play with...the others I am really happy with. My other pipes in the rack are all shrinking back from me...sweating whether or not I am gonna strip them nekked and restain them...just for the hell of it and something else to play with. I've got everything I need except good sense...that is hard to find or come by.

Oh, yeah, I'm am passed thrilled...they turned out great and no bubbling from heat... The porosity of the cob might be a big benefit in this case. When Ed made that cob tamper for me, he finished it with CA. He told me that it was a pain in the arse to do because the cob kept soaking up the CA. I don't remember how many applications it ended requiring in the end, but it was a lot. I don't think he ever did another one for that reason.

Finally found my camera...had to recharge the battery...been awhile...anyway, here they are...best I could do with limited knowledge. The top picture is a country gentleman with a saddle tan stain. The second one is a Legend with dark brown stain, the last is a Legend with saddle tan stain. Working on one now using black stain after which I will sand it down to get some "grain" to show and then coat it with the poly seal to see how that comes out. Again, sorry, I don't have piffy's skills so this is about the best I can do. So far I am the happiest with the saddle tan stain.

Pick up a few Country Gentleman Pipes on the cheap side, refinish, sell make a few bucks in your pocket. More fun ahead for you!!!
