I'm new so maybe I could learn something from the more seasoned pipers. is there something I should do differently when smoking outside in winter? do you pack loose and smoke faster? use a more dry tobacco to make lighting easy? is there a problem with briar cracking from extreme temperature changes? I am going outside with a room temp pipe to start but I don't know what the strategy is to come back inside without setting off a very sensitive smoke alarm. not sure if I should leave it on the deck like I do with the cob pipe. alternatively I could just scoop out all the remaining ash, cherry, tobacco and just bring it inside. my tamper gets cold and it tends to put the fire out.
thanks in advance

When it gets too cold, I have started smoking in my mobile smoke shack, my Honda Accord. I pull it out of the garage, crack the moon roof, fire up the heater and XM radio and smoke in comfort. I’ve tried to convince my wife that I need a smoke shack in the back yard, but so far it’s a no go. The car option might be cheaper in the long run.

I'm in central Texas. I'm afraid I have no real experience smoking in what most of the country calls "cold" weather.
Still we get our stretches of freezing temps. And when we do, I don't do anything different with my packing, tobacco, lighting, or pipes. It's never been an issue.

In the cold my pipe is packed just as I do any other time and I take my time smoking it as well. If weather is going to force me to speed up my pipe smoking cadence then its not worth smoking. I smoke the blend as dry or wet as I do any other time as well.
The tamper, I dont have issue with it in the cold but if you do and its metal try keeping it in your pocket or go with wood. Many use a golf tee and it works great.
You can easily scoop and dump your waste and take the pipe inside and perform whatever cleaning process you do. I've sat outside in pretty cold weather with a bag of pipes and blends knocking out a bowl or two or even three in two hours. I dress warm and have a hand warmer too. With guests I have a small propane heater. Still, being in the cold I havent had an issue with my pipes. Going outside with one pipe and smoking it, dumping it and coming back in with it should be just fine.

When I lived in the frozen north I smoked pipes inside and cigars outside.

I'm not too worried about the pipe cracking from temp changes. I just sit on the balcony and smoke. Dress in layers and find a way to keep your hands warm. I've found that some of my best smoking experiences have been in the cold weather. Maybe I'll pack smaller bowls here and there but mostly I just pack and smoke till I'm done. Sometimes I'm satisfied after half a bowl and save the dottle for later.

Mostly what the others have said...if you have a meer, you might not want that to be exposed to freezing temps...could crack the meer as some have stated.

If you're starting off at room temp then you'll have no issue. It won't be much different than any other time of year. The ember will keep the pipe hot.

Also, if you tip everything out when you're done, before coming inside, there should be no issue with the smoke alarm either, as far as I can tell.

I just use a cob when outside to avoid risk. Thinking of getting myself a forever stem and a nicer cob here soon.

I smoke inside. Cigarettes outside though.
Something I've noticed when coming in from outside is the condensation that can happen on a briar I f allowed to cool. That could be bad over time. If even just for the finish.

Unless it is bitter cold (which wouldn't be worth a smoke imo) why not just dress warm and go for a little walk? Keep your tamper and light source in your pocket, keeps it warm, and finish the smoke outside, dump, clean with pipe cleaner , etc? I wouldn't smoke an expensive pipe outside but anything else I would.

I feel bad for you guys, I got a taste of what you must deal with, while a guest in Kansas, I stayed at my brother’s house. Over the course of 3 days, I smoked one bowl in two different periods.... (sub freezing temperatures).
If I had to relocate to a frozen climate, I would have a room dedicated to smoking at the very least.

I remember one winter I was traveling through some place in My. went down to -52° had icicles coming out of my nose from breathing out...that was an experience! Didn't have a heater plug in my oil pan...had to go out at 3AM to run the van so the oil wouldn't freeze up.

A small cob like pony express from MM is my perfect winter cob.. my fun meter starts to drop just as I get to the bottom of the bowl in the really cold on the porch.. I do have a barn heater in my garage for when I want a longer smoke but the garage is detatched so I have to stomp thru snow and the occasionial dog turd on my way to the garage...
I also tend to smoke aromatics in the winter.. I take a large hot coco out with me when I smoke... and the aro and coco tend to compliment each other..jmho

roadsdiverged I still live in the great frozen state of Michigan and love the cold. I have been hunting all week since its the start of firearm deer season. Yesterday was 30 deg with zero wind and decent humidity it was a perfect afternoon to sit in the woods.

Beautiful weather Josh. It was 30 here this morning as well. Everyone is complaining about it and I'm just sitting here in a hoodie loving it.
Any luck with the hunt? I gave it up years ago because it doesnt feel right hunting deer in shorts.
It must be Michigan blood!

I got a button buck earlier this year with my bow, shot a doe last night. Prepping myself to go track her now. We've got snow on the ground for about a week now, its fantastic hunting this year. I'm glad for the cold weather this year its been far too warm the last few.

There's something great about smoking a pipe under the stars on a clear winter's night.
