What is everyone's honest thoughts on the Peterson system pipes? I've been smoking one today and can't decide if I like it.

I’ve been thinking the same thing over the last couple of weeks. I like a 9mm filter and many of the pipes I like with it, have the p-lip. I have two p-lip pipes. I like the shape, but I clench most of the time, and they are occasionally falling in my lap. Maybe it is my bite, but I cannot get comfortable with it. I don’t think I will get another.

I'm partial to them, but I started my pipe smoking adventure with them, so I'm probably biased.

I've owned several over the years and don't care for them.

I've never used one but that's not saying much. It just seems odd to me so I always pass them up.

Not a real fan of the p-lip. I do have a system pipe with a standard fish tale button that I quite like.

Whenever I've gotten a Pete , the first thing I do is replace the P-Lip with a nice wide fishtale beforeI even put a match to it. To put it bluntly, I HATE P-Lips!

I guess they do help with tongue bite but I still prefer a standard bit. I don’t mind smoking them when a Pete pops up in rotation.

I like system pipes. But I don't know that the design is as functional as mfr's claim.
Say I smoke "x" tobacco in my NON-system pipes, there's hardly any moisture at the end of the smoke. Same "x" blend in my system pipes and there will be plenty of moisture in the well at the end of the smoke.
So, sure, there's a lot of moisture in the well after a smoke. But it's the well system itself that's responsible for a lot of the moisture to begin with.
The well system's drilling creates turbulence. Turbulence creates moisture. So the well is just capturing the moisture created by the system's complicated drilling design.
That's my .02 at least. But, again, I like my system pipes.

I have to agree on all points, but conventional thought at the time of the patent was that it removed moisture.... Peterson doesn’t tout it that way now.

Dave, I’ve smoked a fairly fresh Virginia blend a few years back with one of the Pete’s with a P-Lip and it “ bit “ the roof of my mouth severely. I guess my Ph level is off, what ever Virginia I smoke that’s not been aged I’ll get a “ snake bite “ just after a few puffs. Yup, even with a P-Lip. I monitor the moisture level of a blend, I’m still not able to smoke any fresh Virginia tobacco’s. I’m an odd duck again!!

You are the forum's archive expert. Thank you. I still can't used to them, but the last time wasn't as bad an experience as the previous time I tried. Thankfully, the fishtail replacements are easy enough to pick up.

I have two petes, and both of them are fishtails. The p-lip just seems...unappealing. When I can buy something I know I will like, I am not willing to take a chance with what I might like.

I must be the odd man out, I like the p-lip for myself, that being said, you either like the p-lip, or you don't. I'm a clencher, so they work well for me.

I don't really feel strongly one way or the other. I can take 'em or leave 'em.

Don't like the look...if I had one I would get a fishtail to replace it.

I like the P-lip. I prefer not to buy a Peterson without the P-lip. My first pipe was a System pipe with a p-lip. I also like my WDC Jumbo with the p-lip. Savinelli copied them too, so a lot of people must have liked them at one point in time.

I rarely smoke straight Virginia’s unless they have years on them.

My earlier comment: I think what really changed my point of view, is my most recent acquisition, a Pre-Republic Peterson that smokes as smooth as silk.... Never say never.

I’ve got a couple of estates with them. The first was out of curiosity, to try out the concept. The second was a great deal on a nice looking pipe. I don’t plan to buy any more of them.

I had to look at the petersons to see if I had one with a P-lip and I don't have one. I guess I have to buy one now to see if I like it or not. You guy's are killing me.

I actually like being able to direct the smoke to different areas of my tongue. I find that can intensify flavors and help me pick up subtleties. Of course, you can’t do that with a P-lip.

I like the p-lip. Makes it easier to clench.
