In your opinion, do aromatics smoke better in a cob?

I'm with Martin, I think everything seems to smoke better in a cob.  I even smoke Lakelands in them.

Andre, in my humble opinion, I would say yes... reason being that, for me, aromatics smoke wetter and cobs are more forgiving of a wetter tobacco. Again, my experience only... YMMV.

I enjoy the cob with Aro's as well , all of my cobs have rather small bowls and find when I smoke and aro in a larger bowl the flavor goes after sometime.. Are there larger cobs ?

As you can see they have a decent range, all the way up to the MacArthur....they do a good job of supplying the dimension's etc...

Obviously due to the size of cobs In my opinion, they have their limitations....No where No how, does any cob match my Large WO Larsen Rusticated Brandy when smoking an English blend, the large round bowl really allows the flavors to come through in a way that even leaves most other briars in the dust also though.

As for aromatics, I cannot say I lost my love for them long ago...but they might benefit from a larger bowled pipe, and maybe a brandy shape would work well.... experimentation is part of the journey, but financial considerations outside of cob purchases...always good to ask advice.

Old Dominion makes a cob that has a .9 inch chamber. I've never owned an old Dominion cob because the stems look terrible to clench, but this one has piqued my interest on several occasions.

I am not a fan of cobs. I will say that while I haven't had a bad smoke in a cob, I have never had anything above an alright smoke. I have a cheap brair with a smaller bowl that does very well with aromatics.

It's my opinion that every cob is different. The same is true for each block of briar, but the difference is even more so with cobs, in my experience. I have some cobs that are very dense and others that are very airy. Then there's the position of the draft hole, which can vary by huge amounts from cob to cob. So, I'm hesitant to deny or confirm any blanket statement about cobs. I find that some blend types prefer one cob, while other blend types prefer other cobs and some will smoke anything at all. Just like briar.

I have an Old Dominion Chesapeake and the little round stem clenches better than one would think. One's teeth structure play a roll as well but as cobs go, they're pretty light so it doesnt take much. As you can get the Chesapeake model for less than $10, its worth a try if one is into cobs.

^ Good to know!! Though Cobs are a good choice, for my Latakia blends I often go for my larger bowled briars. I will look into the above suggestion.

Aros are hot. So when they want to go out, I let them. I don't wrestle with it.

Let it go out and cool down. Relight. Thats how I enjoy those really heavily cased aros.

Thats why I prefer lighter aros like Founding Fathers.

Yeah SWRA isn't too heavily cased.  I like it.  I like some super cased tobaccos like Vanilla Custard.  But eh, I think there's a reason most of us seasoned codgers prefer the non-aros.  Their names don't make us hungry but... They're so much easier on the pipes, on the roof of your mouth.  And the flavour..  A good Virginia is just heavenly on its on.  I would recommend FF as another good one for the non-aro smoker who wants a crowd pleaser that doesn't have all of the usual problems that comes with smoking an aromatic.

Makes sense. I almost always smoke Lakelands in a cob, but haven't really smoked too many other aromatics in them - oversight on my part.  Good thread, Legend Lover!
