Xikar for soft flame- but it is 8 years old before the quality went to hell. Vertigo - never fails me and works great for the Frank method of lighting a pipe

Another vote for xikar pipeline. I’ve has mine for over 2 years and, knock on wood, have had no issues. I just make sure to clean the nozzle when I fill it, about every 10 days. Soft flame for charring light. Then use a Zippo with pipe insert for relights. Watch for sales on the Xikar and you can get that and a Zippo for 100 bucks or less. Looked at Old Boy but don’t like the 35 dollar fee if it needs service. Zippo and Xikar free lifetime warranty (other than shipping it to their service department).

I bought an old Boy and was less than impressed, obviously it must be a good product by virtue of all the people that really like them...If you buy one, I suggest avoiding buying one from Mars Cigars. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/1854/mars-cigars-less-impressedI bought a used Colibri made in Japan in the 1980's from Ebay, it has worked flawlessly, and has a great angle for the pipe, for $20.00 I still always have my Zippo as a backup though...it has no competitors when it comes to the wind. I too have an older Colibri, a cigar torch not for pipes. Mine is from the 90s, and it still works great. I was referring to the modern era Colibri pipe lighters. I got one a few years ago. It would only light when exposed to open flame while pressing the lever, not when struck. I've learned that this has been a common problem since the company changed hands. I bought my Old Boy 9 years ago and it's still working fine.

I bought a used Colibri made in Japan in the 1980's from Ebay, it has worked flawlessly, and has a great angle for the pipe, for $20.00 If you're willing to go used, it can be a really great option. A used Dunhill Rollagas or Dupont Ligne 1 in repairable condition goes for about $50 on eBay. Getting it serviced and a pipe valve installed is around $125 at the official sources.
If you can do without the pipe valve, there are non-authorised repair guys who will service Dunhill and Dupont for a lot less than the official sources... but they never have rare parts like the pipe valves. So you will be stuck with the standard, non-angled flame.
I have a lot of fancy lighters but I haven't bought any of them brand new. The deals on eBay are too good. Dunhill, Dupont, Cartier, Caran d'Ache, Tiffany, you name it -- it's all out there at reasonable prices if you are persistent enough.
I have a dunhill rollagas that I repaired, but it has an issue with the gas flow, even with 3 o rings inside the tube its either a torch or i need to turn the gas valve as low as possible then turn the adjusting wheel to get a decent flame. But even then it'll sometimes randomly get too low or too big, also seems to leak gas. But i can't find a way to be sure. Ever used a nimrod? I have a Zippo pipe lighter and its great, doesn't work well with very wide bowls however. Think the air pull just can't reach the flame. Matches are still probably my favorite lighting device.

I have em all, from expensive to cheap, one of my best purchases was on E-Bay, a Surome lighter, Japanese, usually made in Japan but moved to China and the quality is still there. You might be happy with this brand for not many bucks. Check this out, i was looking to see if their tanks were plastic and found this neat little webpage of theirs. I think I may buy one of these for myself. www.sarome.com/craftsmanship/process.html

The Surome lighters look nice and well made, but the cost is the same as an Old Boy.

There are a few older model Surome lighters on eBay that are selling for under $35.00 but they are for cigarettes or pipes. Not really a good pipe lighter. The Surome lighters that are selling new for under $20.00 are made in China.....confirmed by two sellers on eBay.

Im personally looking at a used calibri but im not sure how nice the tanks are. Also cannot find a 45 degree like the one posted here, all the angled ones on the Bay are hideous. I normally just stick to matches for this reason, not a single soft flame butane I've had has held fuel good. When my zippos need less refilling theres really no reason to waste my money on butane and a "nice" lighter when they run out of juice after just a few days.

I agree....” just because it’s made in China doesn’t mean it’s crap “! Many fine knives are made in China...Reate and Kizer are excellent examples 👍👍👍. However the Surome lighters from China are not made of brass parts. The seller I know personally from eBay said it’s worth $16.00, but don’t expect a $100.00 quality butane lighter. His lasted about a year.

I had a really bad experience with Xicar. Their cigar cutters are great (love the scissors) but the only Xicar lighter I've had (do they call it the Pipeline?) was terrible. Had to send it in for service twice and then gave up on it. That same scenario was played out by two of our pipe club's members. They sent them back twice and on the third try got one that worked properly.

The Sarome model to buy is the PSP SERIES, didn't see any today on the bay, got mine about 2 to 3 yrs ago for about 20$ a piece and they have performed flawlessly.

Some Saromes are cheap plastic trash, others are milled from solid brass like a Dunhill or a Dupont.
(For $16 I wouldn't expect to receive something cut from solid brass.)

The lower right is a 40 plus year old Colibri. Both made in Japan and still work flawlessly.

I have a 1980s Colibri with a convertible flame that works perfectly, and holds fuel for months at a time.
I have a 1990s Colibri that won't hold fuel overnight.
(I bet you can guess which one is made from solid brass!)

I have to different kinds of butane pipe insert. Both have plastic tanks and neither leak. A Dunhill lighter is not an option for me. The Thunderbird is very good, but the other one is a "Z-Pipe" and doesn't need a flint, so it's the one that I can always depend on.

It should probably be obvious that I enjoy fancy lighters for their own sake.
There's nothing wrong with a disposable or a Zippo, but I collect fancy arse lighters. I just like'em.
There is a certain pleasure in striking a piece of precision machinery, and seeing the flame. It is a joy similar to holding a very fine artisan pipe in hand.
A fancy lighter ain't gonna burn your tobacco that much better than a Zippo or a match, but it adds to the pleasure the same way that a fancy pipe does.

I am committed enough to my fancy lighter habit that I bought one of them solid silver Zippos.
It ain't a single bit better than a regular Zippo. It's just pretty to look at, and heavy in your hand. That's all.
Fancy butane lighters are genuinely better than cheap refillables*, but they ain't one bit better than disposables. In terms of reliable flame, a butane Dupont isn't an iota better than a bic.
But it's pretty to look at.
* inexpensive refillable butane lighters are genuinely kinda trashy. I'd much rather have a disposable butane than a cheap refillable.

$133 shipped as of this week. I agree about buying the right estate pieces. I just got a beautiful but leaky Rollagas back from ARS overhauled with a pipe flame signed for on Monday. I have another great, like new pipe lighter for less than $200.

I'm back smoking a pipe after a very lengthy time without one. A lot seems to have changed since I could go to the Tinder Box store at the mall and get advice, along with everything else I needed. I'm ready to buy a good butane lighter. I suppose I'm willing to pay $100. I could go a little higher than $100 but it would have to be a lighter that would last. A warranty would be a plus. What do you guys suggest? I've used the IM Corona Old Boy myself for the last couple of years, and have had no issues with it to date. I have the Black Matte one myself, and do agree with johnlawitzke that Top Hat Tobacco does appear to have an outstanding price for this particular butane lighter

They carry a good variety of Peter Heinrich’s blends. For a long time, it was the only place where I could order PH #30 which I love. #30 is basically PH Special Curly broken up with Syrian Latakia added.

ARS ( lighterrepairs.com/) is the official repair group for Dunhill lighters in the U.S., so they're the only ones who can sell you a pipe valve.
Un-authorised repair guys are much, much cheaper, but they can't get the angle flame valve.
A Rollagas is nimble enough that I find I don't really require the pipe valve -- I do just fine without it and don't burn my fingers.
Duponts, not so much ... really gotta get the pipe valve on those.
