I'm back smoking a pipe after a very lengthy time without one. A lot seems to have changed since I could go to the Tinder Box store at the mall and get advice, along with everything else I needed. I'm ready to buy a good butane lighter. I suppose I'm willing to pay $100. I could go a little higher than $100 but it would have to be a lighter that would last. A warranty would be a plus. What do you guys suggest?

Old Boy...and that isn't me I'm talking about...look them up on the "google is your friend" site.

I would think you could get a good butane lighter for less than $100 though. Perhaps I'm wrong. I think, at least with that budget, you've got a lot of scope. Others will be able to give you more advice. I'm a matches man myself.

I'd love to give an old boy a whirl. I mean, I use bics and have trouble imagining how these lighters are that much better.

Howdy and welcome. See the thread for massive deals at Payless. Looks like some good deals on lighters

I have em all, from expensive to cheap, one of my best purchases was on E-Bay, a Surome lighter, Japanese, usually made in Japan but moved to China and the quality is still there. You might be happy with this brand for not many bucks.

Definitely Old Boy. Pricey, but very very nice lighter.

Old Boy if you are set on spending around $100.
If you don't mind getting a lighter that's just as reliable for half the price of an Old Boy get a Xikar.
I own 2 Xikars and absolutely love them. Lifetime warranty. Very dependable. And no charge replacement/repair if anything DOES go wrong. An Old Boy warranty isn't really a warranty given that they charge $35 or so to repair/replace if something goes wrong.

I've been pretty happy with my Kiribi. More ergonomic than old boy. I prefer pipemaster to old boy.

I really like my Old Boy. I had to have it serviced after 10 years of service (YMMV), and it did cost $35.00, but came back functioning like new. Works for me.

I had a really bad experience with Xicar. Their cigar cutters are great (love the scissors) but the only Xicar lighter I've had (do they call it the Pipeline?) was terrible. Had to send it in for service twice and then gave up on it.

For what it's worth,it use a Ronson Grenade and a Thunderbird butane insert in a Zippo. Both sub £20!

You can get a Thunderbird or Vector insert for the Zippo both for $20. What ever you get, be sure to use only the best quality butane available. I use Vector 14x.

I really enjoy my Old Boy and Zippo with the pipe insert. No problems ever with either👌👍👍. Stay clear of the new generation Colibri lighters made in China!!!
Bic makes a good butane for indoor use, you might burn your fingers as I do!!!
PS I must add, I also have a Xikar that needed repair after 5 years. Xikar replaced the lighter at no charge with an apology........can’t beat that either 👍

The Zippo butane pipe lighters are great. Not the best in the wind but still great.
I also use a Clipper lighter as a backup. Has a lot going for it that make it better than a Bic and its shape works as a tamper if in a pinch.

Bic used to make a disposable butane pipe lighter, but I haven't seen them in a while.

I love xikar lighters I have all 3 pipe style lighters and 2 of their cigar lighters. Its awesome and the folks there are easy to deal with. I recently experienced their service department and ended up with three brand new products.

I like matches. I get the diamond green ones at the dollar store.
There's something special about lighting a pipe with a match.

Over the years I've had many butane lighters: Colibri (avoid these!), Lotus, Xikar, Peterson, and Corona Old Boy. My experience is to get a Bic or an Old Boy. Nothing really in between, when all is said and done.

I bought an old Boy and was less than impressed, obviously it must be a good product by virtue of all the people that really like them...If you buy one, I suggest avoiding buying one from Mars Cigars. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/1854/mars-cigars-less-impressedI bought a used Colibri made in Japan in the 1980's from Ebay, it has worked flawlessly, and has a great angle for the pipe, for $20.00 I still always have my Zippo as a backup though...it has no competitors when it comes to the wind.

Plain old Zippo for 20 bucks. It lasts forever, and if you do drop it off a cliff they'll fix it free. 20 more bucks for a gallon of naptha and that'll keep it fueled for decades. As Charlie says, no competitor in the wind either.

Remember, the $100 "Old Boy" is a knockoff of a $400 Dunhill lighter cut from solid brass. They already cut corners to make the Old Boy -- it's sheet brass instead of solid, with a separate piece of metal for the tank. Fortunately, this doesn't matter too much as a functional matter.
To get it below $100, you have to start cutting corners in places that will really hurt -- like using a plastic tank instead of brass.
Every refillable lighter with a plastic tank leaks. Every damn one. I don't know why. Perhaps it is the differing coefficients of expansion in the metal valve and plastic tank.
If you don't want to throw down $100 on a lighter, your best bet is a Zippo or a Nimrod. Fluid lighters are simple. No complicated, expensive parts.

Nothing really in between, when all is said and done. Colibri used to be associated with very fine lighters made in Japan, but they went bankrupt at some point in the 1990s and started selling some really cheap trash.
Lotus and Xikar have always sold cheap trash. Buyer beware. Lots of plastic tanked pieces of junk in those product line-ups.
A Bic has a plastic tank, but it has no fill valve. So it doesn't have the problems associated with cheap plastic lighters. No fill valve, no leaks, no problems.

I bought a used Colibri made in Japan in the 1980's from Ebay, it has worked flawlessly, and has a great angle for the pipe, for $20.00 If you're willing to go used, it can be a really great option. A used Dunhill Rollagas or Dupont Ligne 1 in repairable condition goes for about $50 on eBay. Getting it serviced and a pipe valve installed is around $125 at the official sources.
If you can do without the pipe valve, there are non-authorised repair guys who will service Dunhill and Dupont for a lot less than the official sources... but they never have rare parts like the pipe valves. So you will be stuck with the standard, non-angled flame.
I have a lot of fancy lighters but I haven't bought any of them brand new. The deals on eBay are too good. Dunhill, Dupont, Cartier, Caran d'Ache, Tiffany, you name it -- it's all out there at reasonable prices if you are persistent enough.
