Just placed an order with Pipes & Cigars..I always get great service from them. They told me that because I live in N.Carolina they now have to charge me sales tax...Darn politicians never get enough.

That sucks big time. I'm assuming they have no choice in that decision do they?

We'll be seeing more of this in the future. Sin taxes are always a "go-to" solution for the states.

What kind of percentage are you talking about here? Each State or County of that State has a slight difference in the amount of sales tax collected. Here in Wake County it’s 6.75%. Some Counties in NC charge as much as 7.5%. Some States charge an outrageous SIN tax on tobacco products.....NY and California are among the highest.

When the question is asked how much money is needed, the answer is always more. Good Grief.

Here's the situation..I order Lane HGL in 5 pound bags. It's mostly what I smoke. The price just went up 14 dollars a bag plus 7 dollars tax.A total of 21 dollars a bag increase.Prices on not just tobacco but everything seems to be rising at ever increasing speed. When is this world going to realize that I'm retired and living on a fixed income.

This isn't draconian even by US standards, much less others. I don't see any heavy handing on the part of government here folks.

When I was living on Long Island I definitely avoided purchasing cigars within the NYC limits. There is a 75% City SIN tax on cigars. Also cigarettes and pipe tobacco are taxed much higher within the City limits. That’s HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!
I knew a few owners of B&M’s in NYC for years, therefore that 75% SIN tax was waived as long as I paid cash. It’s who you know.........

Mister Broken Record here...
As soon as I got back into pipe smoking, realizing that pipe tobacco was far cheaper than cigarettes, no taxes for online purchases, and I could easily trigger free shipping with my purchases... then I heard Levine say several times “Pipe tobacco will never be more available and cheaper than it is now”... I knew it had to be true, figured out my likes and cellared accordingly.
I missed the boat on some opportunities on investments that I regret, tobacco isn’t one of them.
Sucks for new smokers and fixed incomes.

Collecting state sales tax on items purchased isn't exactly a newly created concept nor necessarily a bad thing either. We've had things good for a long time fellers.

Glad I did most of my stocking up before this happened. I would venture to say you probably have one of the largest stockpiles of tobacco within the pipe community. Extremely smart investment for your future 👌👍👍

Likewise, I'm glad that AJ talked me into building a cellar five years ago...so now while I don't have the poundage I'd like to have, I have enough to make it several years. This has been the reason I have hollered about building up your cellar...never cheaper or more available than it is right now.
If you haven't done it, better start right away. McClelland and Dunhill brands are an example of most likely will be happening with a number of tobaccos. Just do it!!!

Walt, over 3 years ago on another forum I warned fellow pipe smokers what’s inevitable in the near future pertaining to pipe tobacco. Availability, price increase and “ your favorite “ tobacco disappearing from the market completely. I recommended then to start building your tobacco cellar as deep as you can afford. Stock up now, once those FDA “ regulations “ take effect we might be losing more of our favorite tobacco’s!!
Now the loss of Dunhill and McClelland, what’s next??

When prices of all forms of smoking become so high that young folks decide with all their other expenses they can't afford to start smoking, and this old generation of pipe smokers is gone so too probably will pipe smoking..If you take a survey of this forum for example and see how old we all are.It might make you feel that we are the last generation of pipe smokers.

yeppers all. Full "rape of the wallet" & getting worse. In NY, 75% baccy tax paid at the wholesale. So far so good that we don't have to pay sales tax on SP sales to NY. At my creaky age, 3+ lbs I feel ok with that.

With all due respect good friend, although small but mighty, our forum sampling wouldn't render any conclusive results. I think pipe smoking is actually growing in popularity. Look at all the skilled pipe makers jumping into he market?

But when/if the coming regs take effect...there will be alot of tobaccos disappearing from the market. If you don't have a sufficient backup of what you like to smoke...you're gonna be a very unhappy piper. Those folks who are "commercial" pipe makers are gonna have to meet these regs too...crazy as it may seem...it will be the law....and they will be bye, bye. just like your favorite tobacco.

This isn't draconian even by US standards, much less others. I don't see any heavy handing on the part of government here folks. "No taxation without representation". In my humble opinion A State where I don't reside has no legal right to impose a tax on me because I have no recourse or representation. I see no consideration as well. If it was boatloads of tea, we should go dump it in the harbor.

With all due respect, you are adequately represented in your respective state which means you should pay sales tax required by your own elected representatives when purchasing products from other states though the Internet from your own state. No tea bags required. Just common sense.

I figure we’ve been exceptionally fortunate up to this point to avoid sales tax on internet sales. “Sin” taxes are another story; depends on if it is your ox being gored.
