Two words: Keto. Ok, that's only one, but it is the only one you need. For most of my Coast Guard career, after I got older and calories in/calories out didn't work anymore, I would keep my weight under control by going on and off of a low carb diet. Gain some weight, stop eating carbs and drinking beer and lose, gain some, lose some. Wash rinse repeat. After I retired in 2013 I started eating like a 20 year old again. I put on some serious gross tonnage. This summer I was over 270 (I'm 5'10) My BP was out of control and I felt like crap. On July 23rd I started a serious ketogenic diet. Less than 20 total grams of carbs a day, moderate protein, and fat to satiety. I cut all sugars, grains, and starches as well as all vegetable oils. I eat fatty meats, green veggies, and lots of natural saturated fats (butter, bacon grease, tallow, lard and coconut oils). I have lost just under 70 lbs and I am down to 203 lbs. My BP has normalized and I am off my meds. My gout is gone, as is any sign of the arthritis in my right ankle. I no longer use my C-pap machine. I feel better than I have in years. I have gone from 42 waist pants to 36 and some 34s and from XXL shirts to L and some Ms. I eat great food, don't restrict my calories, am not hungry and don't feel deprived. my mood is improved and I have tons of energy. I no longer need an afternoon nap a don't get out of breath when I tie my shoes. The only exercise I get is an hour long daily walk with the dog. I plan on losing another 28.8 lbs to take me down to 175. I tried going full keto for about 3 months a year and a half ago. I didn't lose much, but I didn't gain either. I ate a lot of bacon and Ribeyes. I might have to give it another go. I'm almost in the same boat as you were, and I need a manageable way to lose weight. The sad reality is that I had to give up drinking beer. I can have a glass of wine or two, but a pint of Guinness will set me back at least a week. Other than that, it is not hard for me. I like meat. I make cream and butter sauces and the only calorie watching I do is to make sure that I am not eating too few. There are tons of resources out there, but I would recommend the 2ketodudes podcast beginners show to get an good feel for how it works. Control your insulin production and control your weight. The science backs it up.

I'm also type 2 (one of the effects of my prior drinking habit), so the insulin thing is why I try to do low carb anyway. These last 6 weeks I've been off the rails. I'll check out the podcast suggestion.

You guys with this keto diet. Sounds like there is really something to this. I didn't have as much trouble with the 20g carbs per day, as I did with eating more fat than protein. You need a tracker, on you phone. I did well with a calories in/calories out diet last year, mixed with low carb (under 50g), and I lost 18lbs in 3 months, but then it slowed down. My sugars were really good though!

I have found that not really worrying about anything but carbs works for me. I eat when I am hungry and don't eat when I am not. I don't snack. The protein goal is really not that important. Some days I'll eat more, some days less, but there is no loss of muscle because once again, that is not how the body works. When you run out of carbs/sugar for energy, you body turns to fat. It metabolizes some proteins, but not enough to make a difference. Your body stores fat for times of famine. That is what it turns to. It keeps the muscle to allow you to go kill another antelope...
The lowering your calories on Keto is poison. The less you take in the less you need. That is the problem with CI/CO in general. It is not sustainable. It was for me when I was young and could spend half of my life playing ball or hanging out in the gym, but that is also not sustainable for most people.
My research (most notably the Minnesota Starvation Study) tells me that the law of thermodynamics does not really apply. That is just not how our bodies evolved to work.
My older sister started the same time as I did.
She has been extremely overweight for years and his tried just about everything known to lose weight to no avail. She is/was a type II diabetic. Her starting A1C was 7.3 and she was on a bunch of meds. She has normalize her BP, and her A1C has dropped to 5.1. She has off of most of her meds and is looking to lose them all completely. She loses slower than I do, but she has dropped more than 30 lbs and is doing well.
It is nearly magical.

You guys with this keto diet. Sounds like there is really something to this. I went from 216 to 153 from October 2017 to March 2018. I have kept it off. I now eat too many carbs to be in proper ketosis, but I am able to maintain my weight simply by staying low carbs. My GP is a fan of the diet, and I have a separate annual physical and a wellness exam each year with full blood work. So far, my good cholesterol is up, my bad cholesterol and my blood pressure went from an average of 135/95 to 114/60 over that same time period, and it has stayed solidly normal. The beauty of the diet is it really curbs your hunger. For example, when I ate low carb, I would struggle stay under 1,300 calories a day. I was miserable. On keto, I would have to remind myself to eat more to get to 1,300 calories, as I was simply not hungry. It is pretty f'ing amazing. If you are interested, send me your phone number in a PM. I can call and help you get started.

So I went for a run today after not running in over a year. I surprised myself.... Summer of 2017 I couldn't run the length of myself. I joined a gym and lost almost 2 stone and got a bit fitter. Things got busier for me and I cancelled the subscription. Of course that was the end of the exercise. That was last Christmas. Today I managed to run the normal route I ran (3.5 km) without stopping or walking. Never new that would be possible. My legs don't work anymore though. I can hardly walk.

20 years. Works for me. In the US, there is a number of studies talking about the benefits of daily fasting.
I am not a fan of the no-carb lo-carb diets. Be smart. Exercise and don't eat like a pig.

I can't do a pure keto diet because of my kidney. (yes, singular). But I have cut the carbs and calories way back. The weather has been conspiring against activity but looks promising for next week.

I just stepped on the scales. I'm 15st 5lbs. I want to lose 2st this year. Do you have any weight goals? Lose weight? Gain weight? I feel this thread might spur us on. What does 1 st weigh?, is it 14-15 lbs?

I've done the keto for a 2 years and after the first I learned that as long as you keep your sugar intake as low as possible you have a pretty good window for carb intake. Just make sure to treat yourself once in awhile so you dont slip.

One thing that has helped me greatly is introducing mung or moong beans ( I call them moon beams) into my diet with regular rotation. I advise looking for them at a spice market or bulk place, grocery stores want to charge you. I buy them at US$1.75 per lb. I make them like a pot of beans with whatever veg you want. Chili peppers, onion, garlic, carrot, whatever spices you like. The taste is like a green black eyed pea if that helps. Worth an Internet search to read known benefits. I am 6'3" and I went from about 270 to 205 with relative ease having only added these to my diet a couple of times a week. No soda, no fast food, unleavened bread we make at home on the grill, lots of water..... Other than that I ate out, had desserts, and still felt the purge! It was glorious!
It's an easy move and you don't have to make any extremes shifts in diet. Whatever that may be worth to anyone...
Good luck to all of you on this journey, I wish you all success!

A number of great points here.
One thing I forgot to mention previously... I'm a voracious reader. Subsequently I've read probably close to 100 books on all manner of diets and nutrition. As a result there are probably things that I, and others, take for granted that may not be that obvious to others.
A few thoughts....
The southbeach diet teaches that one of the beneficial side affects of reducing carb intake is that you stop chasing the high, as it relates to your body being on a yoyo cycle of producing insulin, to cope with the excess sugar (carbs) in you blood stream. As a result of this you get too much insulin in your system and you crave(need) sugar to mitigate the insulin. It's a vicious cycle.
Soda pop is poison. Heck, for that matter, almost anything with processed sugar is darned near poison. I haven't drank sodas since 1994. Admittedly I will have the occasional (once or twice a year) root beer float with my daughter, but other than that I never drink em, and don't miss em.
Keeping your glycemic intake down to a minimum is best. Meaning, little to no pasta, bread, beer, potato's. Studies have shown that your body will convert baked potato's or bread, into fat as fast or faster than it will pure sugar.
Fat, good fat, is good for your body.
We've been sold a bill of goods from the so called experts over the last several decades. The whole "Low fat, HIgh Fiber" diet is one of the worse things you could do.
Your body actually thrives on animal protein and fat. Heck, your brain is over 70% fat. Good veggies are obviously good for you, but the super size bagel and super size orange juice for breakfast is an absolute train wreck for you system.
If you have the time I'd encourage anyone here to watch the documentary "The Perfect Human Diet". It's chocked full of excellent scientific facts and dispells quite a few myths regarding vegetarianism and veganism.
As for the "Fasting", I also find this beneficial, but usually limit it to 4 or 5 days a week (the 12 to 16 hour fast that is)
Well, I'll end the sermon here.

All this Christmas candy laying around. The calories I've avoided having not drank beer for a week or so have easily been made up for in confections. Haha I think I need to muster my resole and just toss it.

Best advise anyone could give is to stay away from the inside of the grocery store. That's where all the processed food is. If you shop on the perimeter, you'll be fine. Fresh fruit, dairy, veggies and meats just like Mom told us.
