I still have my old Crown helmet with visor from 1972. And the goggles.
All I have from 1972 are memories.

All I have from 1972 are memories. The only thing I have from 1972 is me - it’s my birth year.

In 72 I was recovering from a massive wreck, a new but disastrous marriage, falling out with my brother, and a new job paying 73¢/hour.

I guess the bright side was it could only get better from there. Unless the draft was still on in ‘72? I don’t recall. Not making light of Vietnam, but if you wanted to be there you probably would have been instead of a $0.73/hr job.

I was in college in 1970 and I was in the first draft lottery. My friend was the first to go, but I got a lucky number, something like 277 out of 365. Before the lottery it was impossible to find a good job as you were likely to be snatched. Everyone was having sleepless nights not knowing. Yes, things were mostly better after that year.

I rode the trike today! Only a half mile to get the State inspection before loading it in the trailer to haul it home. Took me an hour to get it backed into the driveway. 😁😏😢🤠 Anyway, it now looks like a spaceship from the back and the front. Flip a switch and purple lights cycle down the sides of the radiator vents. 2 fog lights, 2 driving lights, and leds over both headlights. It already had the 12 bumper lights and the led wing on the trunk. You have absolutely no excuse to run into me!

1972 I bought a brand new Norton Commando 750, hence the helmet. I had a well paying construction job and no trouble qualifying for the motorcycle loan.

The Summer coat has been put away and it's now dark in the mornings when I leave. Before long, the liner will be back in as will the heavy gloves ... ahh winter.

How did you end up working for 73 cents? Maybe a restaurant? It wasn't the minimum wage here. Plus, I was a union apprentice, which was treated like an intern for the first 30 days. I was raised to $1.35 after 30 days, which was higher than the $1.25 official minimum wage. With overtime, I never made less than an average of $1.25 while starting out in the printing industry. I put out circulars in 58 for 2¢/each, worked at the boys club in 62 for $2/day. I spent one day mowing lawns and decided it wasn't worth it.

I think my stick on chrome louver covers are farkles. $5k in added lighting is a lifestyle. 😁😜🤠

One of the greatest mistakes I made while married was at an estate sale in rural southern California decades ago. You see, the sale included a vintage motorcycle, a "Nimbus". This is an air cooled in line four cylinder made in Sweden, not dissimilar from the old Indian. No one at the sale knew what it was including me. They were asking $7,000. I was sorely tempted. The wife was adamantly opposed. $7,000 was not chump change back then but neither was it a fortune. I missed that one but preserved my marriage. It is like that sometimes, is it not?

There is a motorcycle museum in Vanderpool Texas in the Hill Country. It is amazing to see the craftsmanship on the old bikes. I got to spend some time studying the Indian in line four, and a Vincent Black Knight, among others. The closest thing among modern motorcycles are the top Italian bikes. Over 20 years ago I went with a friend who had a Ducati to the local dealer, who also sold MV Agusta and Bimoto bikes. Those were works of art. The Ducati might have been faster, but the top Agustas and Bimoto were like works of art. Even the foot pegs and shift lever, every nut and bolt was specifically hand finished for the individual bike. I couldn't even think about riding one. I could see hanging them on the wall in a gallery. It is kind of sad that when you look under the skin of the best modern motorcycles and see the standard bolts and rough welds that you have just paid 40k for. Under the plastic, the Gold Wing is the ugliest motorcycle ever made. The Magna was a work of art in comparison.

Even HD, who is so proud of their motors that it’s in their name, is ugly once the side covers and gas tank are off. Flip side is there was a lot less to building a bike back in the day - electronic and emissions demands hadn’t developed yet. I remember the animists of the ‘80’s with great fondness. Of course I never road one but certainly admired them from afar. The Magnas and Sabers were blasts to ride - those V4s were screamers. Wish the retro craze would extend to them, but so far it’s a zero.

The frame on my 66 BMW was utilitarian, but not rough by any standard. Mostly exposed. The K series are a different animal. Give me an Airhead any day.(can't you see I'm old!)

I should note for those who don't know, the Gold Wing has a cast aluminum frame, not welded tubing like most. Somehow it's still uglier than welded steel. Now if the Italians could just build a 2 litre, flat 6 luxury touring bike for less than 30k..... Dreaming 🏍️🚲
