As I have decided to grow my beard out beyond the goatee, I’ve been sporting for years now, I find myself interested in investigating beard oils. I have been using Honest Amish Beard Balm but would like to hear from you what you favorite is and why. A close friend, who also sports a handlebar 'stache recommended : www.samsnatural.com/ so i ordered a 3 pack of samplers. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks! ExChef

I have a stable of oils and balms....they all seem to work well, however, my two favorites are Honest Amish (as you pointed out), and the stuff from Texas Beard Company (Being a Texas boy it seemed a good fit). All of their products I have tried are great. I stick mainly to the Big Thicket oil and balm, and Green Belt oil and balm, but that's just my personal take. I grew up down by Houston, so I love the piney woods lingering smell Big Thicket gives. Hope that helps.

I’ve had some success with good ol Shea butter, Jamaican black castor oil mixed with a bit of grape seed oil50/50, or Argan oil. Argan smells the nicest of these, but the Shea really softens my very curly beard. All pretty inexpensive and not a bunch of ingredients you’ve never heard of. Good luck, be patient, if you’re going long, DON’T trim it no matter how much you may want to. I kinda screwed up, don’t want others to make the same mistake. Then again, it’s just a matter of time till it comes back. Welcome to the band of beards!

I used to use beard oil. It was far too expensive for me. I occasionally put some hair oil on my beard. Same thing but a fraction of the price.

My favorite to use on my beard is from BossmanBrand .com. It is called Jelly Beard Oil. It is a little thicker than your ordinary beard oil. Makes it easier to put on for me. Also comes in a number of different scents. Good Stuff.

I use mostly Honest Amish beard balm, beard oil and beard wax as needed. I also use a beard shampoo.
Also, don't shampoo everyday. It dries everything out, including the skin under your beard, and greatly increases beard itch. Just rinse thoroughly and oil (or balm), then use a mild shampoo 2 or 3 times a week. The hair on your face is not the same as the hair on your head, it's courser. But the skin on your face is not the same as that on your head, it'd more tender. So they are not usually treated the same

I use coconut oil I mix with a few drops of essential oils for a light scent. It helps to also add moisture to the skin.
I use a basic fine toothed comb after rubbing it in.

Thank you for that link. Going to have to try some of those out. Best tip I ever got was: Do not treat your beard the way you do the hair on your head, they're completely different. Considering I shave the hair on my head I had no choice but to take that advice. Truth is, normal shampoo will make your beard dry, I learned this early on when I ran out of beard shampoo. The correct products make all the difference in the world. Other than a week or 2 into growing, I've never had an itchy beard. A good brush and a wooden comb are nice to have as well. I'm going for wizard status

Haha Josh....I'm around the lumberjack area right now. Another 3 or 4 inches and I'll be able to touch my beard to my bellybutton....
That is my metric for success....touching my beard to my bellybutton. LOL
My avatar pic was from over a year ago, so it's almost doubled in length.
As for the original inquiry, I wash it with natural soap then lather in coal tar and let it sit for a few minutes.
Afterwards, I use honest amish conditioner.
Never felt the need to try anything else.

By the first years growth rate I figure I have 2-3 years to go to reach my belly button. I should be a wizard by 5.

I've tried quite a few brands of beard balm.
The two makers whose products I most prefer:
Honest Amish Heavy Duty Beard Balm and Grave Before Shave "Cigar" scented Beard Balm
Each does something a little better than the other. I get more "hold" from Honest Amish. But I get far better moisturizing benefit from Grave Before Shave.
Now, if aroma matters AT ALL to you or a significant other, Grave Before Shave wins that contest easy. Their "Cigar" scented balm is AMAZING. There is more vanilla scent than tobacco leaf (cigar) scent in there. But, wow, does it smell wonderful. And, amazingly, the scent lasts all-day without being overpowering. I get regular compliments when wearing any Grave Before Shave balm (but even more compliments with the Cigar scent). That doesn't happen with any other balms. None.
Honest Amish is an amazing balm if you need/want plenty of control without making your beard stiff. This balm does the seemingly impossible by keeping your fly-aways and shaping in-check without looking/feeling like you lacquered your beard in place. It's greasy and a bit lumpy out of the tin. But, warm that up by rubbing it into your hands and it turns into a creamy easily-applied balm. The scent is very hard to pin down. I'd say it was close to licorice...but, not close enough to make me comfortable calling it licorice. I know that doesn't make sense. But, the fact is, the scent for Honest Amish Balms seem to be a hit-or-miss matter. There's hardly any in-between. You either like or you don't. In my case, my wife doesn't.

Though they have nothing specific to beards, I really like L'Occitane... multi-purpose products that smell great and work well... usa.loccitane.com

I use a small amount of Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Conditioner about every three showers. IF I get a rare day with steady hands I will kill the beard with a Shumate straight edge from the 1900s.

I really have enjoyed the Honest Amish, but am looking to branch out a bit. I have used GBS mustache wax and found it to be a bit too soft for a good hold. You are right that the "Cigar" scent they have is great though. Just posted a "current status" pic, 4 weeks into the full growth but the mustache is on point! ExChef

Now I’m just letting it grow long, it’s now roughly 8” longer than my chin. Once it gets to long I’ll have it braided......lol. Many do that down “ heir “. I’m going for the ZZ Top look now👌👍👍

Your moustache is majestic, exchef . What can I say, 50th b'day present from the wife. At my 50th dinner with some friends, she saw my buddy's handlebar mustache and said "you should grow on, it would look good on you". Here it is, almost 3 years later. I have to say, one thing leads to another, after the mustache developed the nice curl, she looked at me around the holidays last year and said "you'd look good with a pipe to go with the mustache". So i said that maybe she and our daughter should pick one for me. And they did. Now y'all are stuck with me. ExChef

Are you talking about the heavy duty balm? I use the regular balm and I feel all it does is condition, there seems to be no control, just dries up and softens the beard real nice. (edit - duh, I need to learn to read better.)
As far as scent...you're right, it is hard to pin down. I use the term "earthy", but that still doesn't effectively describe it.
I've never felt the need to change anything up, but you've got me interested in the grave before shave balm. They certainly have some killer marketing and products. I can see spending some money at that site in the near future.

I am not new to beards, but have grown mine out this year to new lengths so have needed to focus on how I treat it more. For me, regular shampoo and a good conditioner keep it clean and non itchy/dry. I have played around with a few oils and balms post shower but the thing that my beard likes the most is just simply some coconut oil rubbed in. I consume a lot of coconut oil and have a giant tub in the kitchen at all times so it is convenient too. It is super easy to use too. Just scoop an peanut sized amount out of the tub and rub with your hands to melt. work it into the beard with your hands then brush with a good boar brush. Beard shines all day and it actually is the least greasy of the options I have tried.

I use "Honest Amish Extra Grit Beard Wax" witch conditions and controls my beard really well. I would say that it smells like the spices in grandma's kitchen during the holidays. I like the smell, but some folks don't.
The best smelling product I have is "Catholic Beard Balm" which smells like the chrism oil used in baptisms and confirmations. I love the smell, but for some reason my wife doesn't, so I don't use it as often as I'd like.

I was thinking of posting a thread about beard oils a couple of days ago. Nice job exchef. I just starting using oil about three weeks ago. I maintain about a half to three quarters inch growth and was looking for something to condition my beard. I bought a three bottle set of Viking Revolution oils on Amazon for about $17. I am amazed at how much better my beard feels and looks. The scents are your standard sage, sandal wood, and cedar/pine blend, and I like them all, but they don't seem last very long, so I am going to look for something that lasts a little longer after I use these up. BTW, one of the benefits of my ketogenic diet was the fact that my (pre-oil) beard dandruff went away shortly after I cut out carbs. Who'd a thunk it?
