Well... Should I get one? Which one to buy? I heard pre-1969 are the "best there is"... I seem to like blast finish rather than smooth. I'd appreciate some advice on this matter. Thank you.

The pre-69 advice is good They used oil cured Algerian briar on the Shell (blasted) pipes and Bruyere series which were the best smoking pipes they ever made .

...now, it is entirely possible that I was "unlucky" with my little Dunhill collection... I owned 6 or 7 and all were early 1960s or older. The deep blasts were beautiful... they just never smoked well for me... might have been my own fault... YMMV.

There are deals to be had if you are patient...I paid $10 for a 1952 Tanshell (first year of production)....rare find? yes....impossible? no. Shop locally with patience, and find hidden gems....competing globally on the web, will not garner the same results. My Dunhill is a fine smoker, I prefer the Peterson with the Boomerang stem though, it is simply a fantastic smoker, but the Dunhill is at the front of the pack. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/4475/diamonds-rough-time-tell

A 50’s Tanshell is my favorite. Any pre-1968 Dunhill that uses oil cured briar, great smokers. You can still find a deal.....just takes some patience.

I have four old ones, and I enjoy them all. They are wonderful older pieces of pipe history. I may pick up one to two more, or maybe more. I'm kind of stupid like that.

I would like to grab a birth year at some point. Eye candy for the shelf, more than anything.

Got a 1943 large Billard RB, birth year, nothing fabulous in the smoke, it’s like a Rolex, tells time like a timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking, that was the advertisement by John Cameron Swaze , have several one good smoker a large Paneled made in the Sixties. Bertram pipes better in my opinion, an is American.

I own 3. They're all from the 60's and good smokers. Nothing mind-blowing, though. I own better smokers that are worth far less. But I do enjoy my Dunhills. So they aren't going anywhere.

I wouldn't worry about the era but find the Dunhill that's the right size, shape and finish for you(in that order). Patent era Dunhill was my first collection because that's what I was told were the only Dunhill's worth smoking but I couldn't compete for the larger pipes and the smaller pieces I was collecting didn't satisfy. I got my first modern Gr6 pipe and I never looked back. IMO the newer, larger pipes I collect smoke as good or better than the older pieces. Take your time and be picky.

I should add that I have bid on a half dozen Kaywoodie pipes this month alone, and they have gone for ridiculous(in my opinion)prices, so maybe I'll have to settle for a Dunhill. haha

I've no problems with the handful of Dunhills I've acquired over the past four years. All estates, all smoke just fine, but no better or worse than most other pipes I have. ( a couple I don't like, but they smoke all right. Some too heavy or just not attractive to my eye these days.)

If you are looking just to get a pipe that you know will smoke superbly out of the box, Id probably opt for a Castello or Radice. Slightly lower price point and generally guaranteed to smoke well.
On the Dunhill side, yes, go with an estate - preferably a blasted example from 1965 or earlier.

I own 4 Dunhills and am extremely pleased with them. All of them are later models and not estate. Those are probably my best smokers.
