In my Chronicles of a Beginner Pipe Smoker thread I recently came to the conclusion that I don't like burley. Or, at least, I don't like burley heavy blends. I've got a few in my collection, including some Wessex Burley Slice, C&D Redburn, and HH Old Dark Fired. It has been awhile since I've tried the ODF, but I found that with the Wessex Burley Slice and Redburn I got an unpleasant ashy taste on the back of my tongue. At that time I thought for sure that I'd swear off anything with burley, but now I'm not so sure. I fired up some Peter Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme that I thoroughly enjoyed, and much to my surprise it contained burley (though I doubt it had very much). Now I'm confused and not so sure I should swear off burley entirely. I don't WANT to single burley out, so I'm curious if anyone has experienced this same ashy taste with burleys, and if so, what burley blends have you not notice said unpleasant taste?
Edit: Forgot to add -- I also have a tin of Solani Aged Burley Flake that is sealed, and I'm hesitant to pop the seal at this point to try since I may simply rehome it to someone who does enjoy burley.

With mason jars being cheap and taste tends to change and/or expand, I'd say to put the tobacco away and try again next year. You might like it or it might be liked five years from now.
And treat it like BBQ, low and slow. The hotter the pipe, the less flavor comes out.

I enjoy ALL Burley forward blends. Have you tried making a few blends adding Virginia’s and Orientals? Even Perique or Latakia 👍
So, what’s your favorite blend ?

Can't say I had the same experience with Burley but I disliked Virginia's and VaPers when I started smoking but love them now. My advice is to set them back and try them again down the road. You're taste may change and find that you like them.

I haven't even thought of trying mixing my own blends, because I don't know exactly what I like other than to say I really like English blends.

I know many pipe smokers that don’t enjoy Burley blends and the same amount that dislike Virginia’s. Let your tobacco’s mellow with age.....much more enjoyable.......works well for me. Good luck👌👍👍

There is a good chance your tastes will change.

I love burley. But I am a former cigarette smoker. For us, burley is heavenly. Haunted bookshop is one that I know doesn't taste like anything else I know.

I cannot improve on what has been said, but I will be redundant anyway. A lot of people claim that burley gets much better with age, tastes change... I kind of like the ashy taste that I once reviled.
Put it back and revisit occasionally.

Like Charlie, I can't improve on what's already been said. I can simply echo to keep your tobaccos and revisit them in a few months. You never know how your tastes will change.
As for the ashy taste... I've never had that.

I’d suggest one of two things. Either Uhle’s 300 or adding just a dash of mixing black Cavendish (It doesn’t take much) to sweeten it up a little and see what you think?

Another one that doesn't taste anything like anything else is C&D's Crooner, which I am smoking now.
Reason? Deertongue. Bing knew what he liked.
To get a nice, balanced, American-style English tobacco (which basically means mild english+ Burley), I would try Epiphany. This tobacco is so balanced. Its based on Einstein's favourite blend, Revelation. The burley will not overpower you. The latakia, virginias, and perique in this blend should hit your palate just right, if its anything like I think you describe. You can discover burley in this blend without being mortified by it. I would give Epiphany a try before you give up burley completely.
Please cellar all your old burleys. In year, you might decide you love them. If you decide they are still not for you, the gift of giving is always well appreciated by other pipe smokers! Keep the brotherhood alive.

A couple suggestions - Instead of HH ODF, try HH Burley Flake. The HH Burley Flake changed my mind on Burley heavy blends and did not leave an ashy aftertaste. Also, the Solani Aged Burley is a very high quality Burley flake that you should open and try. If you like it, you can always get more (Country Squire has it on sale). If you dont like it, then you can rehome it, but you have nothing to lose by trying it. As for me, I get the ashy, sour taste on the tongue from Latakia as opposed to Burley. A 9mm filter helped with this tremendously and allowed me to enjoy Latakia-heavy blends.

I too dislike Burleys but love HH ODF Flake (which is a combo Burley and Virginia). When its dark fired Kentucky it tastes entirely different than straight Burley. In any case, like the others say, Burley improves with age so just cellar it for a few years then give it a try again.

I'm really going to have to break out my ODF again -- I'm refining my pipe collection and have pipes that I enjoy and seem to smoke better than the ones I was using when I originally tried ODF. I'll also try the Solani and see if it is more agreeable than the Wessex was.

I've recently discovered that I prefer my tobacco more on the dry side, sometimes even crispy (though I don't intentionally get it that dry).

I'm the same way. I don't mind small amounts buried in other blends, and guess it adds some depth and body. But burley-forward blends, uh uh. I try again every once in a while to see if my tastes have changed, but so far they haven't.

You guys should stove some burley. McWiggins gave me some stoved Stokkebye Cube Cut, and it's great. It adds dimension, and boosts the nuttiness. Far less cigarette notes.

Me and Burley have a strange relationship. Some of them I like, others I don't. Some burn up my mouth, some don't.
HH Burley Flake is always a winner.
And after a few months in a jar, I'm glad I can smoke Sutliff RR Match without getting lava mouth.

I had a tin of MacBaren's Burley from the 1960s that was supreme a few weeks ago. Price of the tin was 87 cents. No edge on that one. Had a mellow almond feel.
I do like burley blends as long as that edge is not present. I have several aged tins of Jackknife Plug that I enjoy in the summer months.

I go with the Virginia Burley blends, in particular dark fires like HH ODF. That seems to work for me. But I think all the HH blends have been aged a bit.
