Next year the Mrs and i are wanting to go to Scotland on vacation. We've never left the country so this will be a big trip for us. Anyone ever been to Scotland? Any tips?
Anyone else have some vacations planned?

Next year the Mrs and i are wanting to go to Scotland on vacation. We've never left the country so this will be a big trip for us. Anyone ever been to Scotland? Any tips? Anyone else have some vacations planned? Been there lots. Glasgow has some really nice sections. Glasgow can also be somewhat dangerous. Be careful at night. You know what is hilarious, is that Glasgow also has the best Italian food I've ever had in my life. Check out Amore Ristorante e Pizzeria while you are there. Make sure you check out the "chippies" in Glasgow, also. These are basically havens for Scottish fast food - which is delicious. Fish and chips and lots of other great stuff. Try it all. You will grow. Buchanan street is a great place to take in the city with the wife too. If you like soccer at all, I am going to be a bit biased here and say check out Celtic Park. I grew up going to games in Glasgow. We'd catch a game, take in the food and drink, and then back to Ireland I went. Real "Scotland" is in the highlands, though. Go to Inverness. Its lovely up there. Don't spend too much time in Glasgow. A day or two will cover it. I wish I had more experience with the rest of Scotland.

Greetings Adam. Scotland is a fabulous place. The people are warm and inviting. Edinburgh to me is what I call London light. I love that city. Do a day tour that takes you out of the city and to the north country. Glasgow is a more modern city.but enjoyable.
Having been to Europe many times. My biggest suggestion is if you can travel in the off season, before the end of May or after September. There are no crowds and generally things will be a bit cheaper. Tours you go on may be a bit smaller and more personal.
If you listen to the Pipes Magazine podcast. Brian Levine is also a travel agent and may be able to find you some good deals.
Enjoy the planning!

Scotland is a great place. It's really picturesque up north. Glasgow can be a bit rough in places. Edinburgh is lovely.
You can't really go far wrong.

I agree with all of the above. I lived in Europe for a number of years on The Island of Malta and traveled throughout other European Countries often. I really enjoyed Scotland.....the people are wonderful and will open their doors to Americans. You will find a number of pipe smokers that will share their favorite tobacco’s 👌👍👍. The cuisine is excellent, never had a bad meal in Scotland......not like two other European Countries I will not mention!!
I’d recommend a day or two in Perth, a city next to the River Tay......just gorgeous. If you and your wife want to visit a few castles that are beautiful, Perth has that as well.
You’ll fall in love with the people and not want to leave. These people are full of fun, a bit crazy......back in the day I was crazy enough to join in one of their sporting events that only the Scottish people can come up with.......I had a blast.
Have a safe journey, it’s one you and your wife will cherish for many years....take plenty of pictures and videos.
Take a look when you have time.........

Bring raincoats, rain hats, rain shoes. It rains.
I prefer the Highlands and islands to the lowland cities. Inverness is a good place to start.
If you like the outdoors, nature, visit the Isle of Skye. Just a short distance from the mainland over a bridge at Lochalsh on the west coast. One beautiful place.
I do not recall if you are a drinking man but you might want to visit a distillery or two or more. I have been to most of them. MacAllan was most impressive. Laphroig is another.
I love Scotland and I am certain you will, too.

The wife and I have been saving up for a vacation to Europe (Switzerland/Germany primarily), but recently I've been thinking about Scotland instead. I'd love to tour some distilleries, not to mention the countryside.

You should go to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and smoke a pipe on the 'bonnie banks' thereof. haha

Mike ^^^^^^^^ do you remember much about Malta during that time period? Did you visit Gozo and Comino as well? Different government from that time period you lived on the Island from when I lived on the Island from the late 80’s. I lived on the Island during the Bush Sr. Presidency.
I still keep in touch with a good friend that was born on the Island, he is now a pilot for Air Malta. He tells me the Island is totally different from the time period I lived there. A lot of money was “ invested “ into big business!!!

So, last year we went to Kentucky on vacation and bought a special bottle of bourbon to take with us to Myrtle Beach this year. What kind of tobacco would you suggest I buy in Myrtle Beach (close to the home of Smoking Pipes and Cornell and Diehl) to take to the bonnie banks?

I'd love to travel but I don't think I can handle 8 hours in a coach seat. Man... Back when when I was a young private in the Army, I took a bus from El Paso to Pittsburgh to save a few bucks. It was like 36 hours and the things I saw... Never took another bus. haha

Back then was British Navy & American 6th. fleet in the harbors. Not like today. Was nice back then. Remember Gozo stop but not Comino. I heard of some financial changes also, but on the "News".

Malta hasn’t been under British rule since ‘73. Definitely quite different when I lived on the Island. Now, let’s just say the government isn’t up to snuff.....lol. Money floating all over the mainland. I keep in touch with a pilot friend that still lives on the Island.

I'd love to tour some distilleries, not to mention the countryside. Switzerland and Germany are both interesting places. I would love to see what Berlin is like now since the unification. Berlin is a beautiful city, about 55 per cent was rebuilt after the war. So, there is mix of architecture. There are also some nice forests in and around the city. Switzerland is like a visit to another dimension. You could spend a lot of time in either place and feel like there was more to do and see.

Looking forward to visiting Low Country (SP's B&M) Hope you have time to visit Bug Nell's Pit Stop on Highway 179 between Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach. Good place to eat. My wife's family used to hold their annual family reunion on Sunset Beach, next door. So, I been there a few time and enjoyed it.
