Really loved this thread. Thanks Andy and Jason for going to the trouble and effort to stage and execute on this. It's amazing what you learn. I would never have thought John Bull myself. That's one I would never have before tried, but now am considering.

Welp, Andy has one more blend to go, and I have 2 1/2, so there's a bunch more to come!

Also, this isn't just a me and Andy thing. I'd love to see some others do it too. Josh, you and Perry could trade samples! Or another two people.

atison, It's taken me a bit to get to some down time in order to give proper attention to another bowl of our tasting. Tonight I'm out in the shop waiting for some oil to dry, so I'm giving this my full attention. Smoking my second bowl of Blend "A" in a Grabow Viscount Poker. The topping is still lightly floral, slightly citrus. Reminds me a HINT of Exotic Orange/Passion topping, but nowhere near as strong. It's Virginia forward, but very mild, and a pleasant smoke. In the briar, I'm not getting a soapy taste, which showed itself several times in the cob. Relights have been minimal. Past the halfway Mark the topping diminishes significantly, and I'm getting some burnt sugar. There could be a little burley in here, but it's not the main player. I think I may have had this before. I'm going to venture a guess in this one: Peter Stokkebye No. 1 Natural (PS1 for short) I could be way off, but the pouch note and flavoring hinted in that direction. I did not open my jar of PS1 to see if I'm correct. Let's see if I know my arse from my elbow!

Cramptholomew - It sounds similar to Holger Danske Original Orange.

Cramptholomew - It sounds similar to Holger Danske Original Orange. I haven't had that one. It's not overpoweringly topped. You can still taste the tobacco pretty prominently. Is that the case with Original Orange? I'll have to dig out my little jar of PS1 to see if I'm anywhere near correct. Or, hopefully Andy will reply before that happens. He hasn't been on here since Friday.

Yes, the Danske is more subtle than Rattray's. It was your reference to E/O that sparked the possibility.

See, I get the same kind of back notes from Bag Piper's Dream, as I do EO. The toppings are very different, but there's an underlying flavor/scent that's definitely common to both. I figured it must be a Rattray's thing, but it's the same note that I got tonight with whatever this blend is, but much more subdued.

Jason, I know what you mean with the aroma of similar characteristics of both toppings in the blends. I believe it’s the type of Cognac.

I never drank much cognac, so I don't have much experience with it. If that's the case, I'm probably WAY OFF in my guess.

Have you ruled out SWRA? Though that would probably give itself away by the cut.

It's not SWRA. This is a fairly fine ribbon, and the topping is completely different.
Edit: it does have some small pieces in it, but that's not the majority of the cut.

Let me know if you'd like to and we could plan it a couple of weeks out. I need to get some personal stuff done first. I'll PM you.

Yep, another pouch tobacco showing up in the blind tastings. Cramptholomew, you review was spot on. Mild, topped but in a nice way. Sweetens as it goes down. It has irish whiskey but the bigger whiskey notes don't express themselves as much as the more subtle floral whiskey notes.

So just to let all you Patchers know, Josh (roadsdiverged) and I are going to do a trade and some blind tasting. We are going to do this in about 2 weeks. So keep an eye out (not literally) for posting in this thread at about that time.

Really not a bad smoke, and for the price, well worth it. I think I'll pick me up a pouch or two! Thanks, Andy. This has been a hoot. On to blend B tonight...

Surprised me too. One of those tobaccos not available where I shop, so interesting to read your experience/opinion of it.

P&C should do this with a blind sampler pack. 2 to 3 samples. If you like it and want to buy more you buy it blind and don't know until it gets to you.
Trying blends blind really does make you focus more one exactly what your tasting and strips away any preconceptions.

It smells pretty latakia heavy so it might be a while. i don't like to smoke heavy lat blends on my commute as it lingers in my car a little more. I will try to get to it though. Looking forward to another surprise.

Had a bowl of PS Engl/Orien Supreme this morning. About 20 minutes into the bowl I was craving the John Bull again. You might of ruined me Cramptholomew :-).
Luckily I have 2 pouches of John Bull coming soon.

Luckily I have 2 pouches of John Bull coming soon. If you like Missouri Meerschaum's American Patriot blend, you can get a pouch of it and John Bull both for $6.99 in this deal. Damn good price for two pouches and helps to build up one's celler while saving money. www.pipesandcigars.com/p/pouch-per-pouch/2004867/#p-2002797

I am a fan of John Bull. However comparing JB with others is difficult as JB is a unique blend. The nuttiness, referred to in the review earlier, gives testimony to John Bull's Burley forwardness, unusual amongst Latakia blends. This makes identification problematic, unless you have tried JB before.

Add another John Bull fan here. Scrooge turned me onto it. Delightful in every way.
