A couple of years ago, a KMart had the wrong price displayed on an upright freezer, it was priced at $350.00 I did a price search and figured it was 40% off compared to any internet searches. When I said that I would buy it, the manager came over and said that the sticker was placed on the wrong unit...when I pointed out that the model number on the sticker matched the unit in question...he said, "Well, I have to sell it to you for that price, but after you leave the store a correction will be made"... as he glared at the appliance guy. The appliance guy was kinda pissed that his mistake was made in such an obvious manner...and when I went to check out, he wanted me to take the floor model...I appealed to the manager and he told the employee to give me a NIB model as that was what the sticker said. Anyway...that freezer has performed wonderfully, until a year ago. I received a call from the wife.."Did you get into the freezer last night?" I told her in the affirmative that I had. "Well the door was cracked open, everything is partially thawed, and it has a hammering sound from the motor." We had a boatload of meat in that thing...25 cu ft, and it was packed.I told her to unplug it immediately, and called my appliance guru...he told me "leave it unplugged for about 24 hours, in the meantime, go buy a floor model from Lowe's..(he knows that I live a half mile from one). "Let it sit for 24 hours and transfer everything into the new freezer...plug it back in, confirm that it pulls down to zero, and put your stuff in it, return the freezer to Lowe's...and that key you got with your freezer?" "yeah, I told him..." (he goes by Doc Holliday...living in Arizona, I don't argue with the cat when he talks this way...plus, he is a day older than dirt and farts dust...respect your elders!) "Hey Dumb arse, that key isn't there to prevent meat thieves from cleaning you out...tether it on the handle and make it SOP to unlock and lock every time you get in it...that will limit your grief in the future" A few days ago, I noticed that the Ice cubes from the dispenser in our 2005 Maytag fridge, were sweaty... never been the case, over the next several hours we noticed that things in the refrig/freezer in the house were softening, and saw more water in unusual places. The fridge still seemed to be doing fine, so we decided to wait until the weekend to shop for a fridge...mistake! The loss of freezing capacity was a harbinger of the death throes of the compressor...if you find yourself there, Run...don't walk to getting a new unit. In between the time we got the new fridge and had the refrigerated stuff in cooler boxes with dry Ice, our sensorpush was invaluable in monitoring safe food temps of the thawed meats in the house freezer: thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/2598/cool-solution-monitoring-humidor-humidityCooking a lot of Bratwurst tomorrow!

Good luck My wife went to the local Mom and pop place and had a nice GE unit for $1,200...but found the same refigerator with a new warranty for $700 at Sears outlet...scratch and dent. The dents were on the side in the fridge alcove that cannot be seen....the dents were on the handles, and I found a new pair of handles in Kansas for $35.00 (page 5 of a Google search, once I found the part number...everyone else wanted $70.00 per handle)...two Allen screws to loosen swap out. Nothing to do with the Samsung recommendation...My Outbound supervisor recommended that I buy LG like he has...all his appliances have Wi-Fi....he can adjust temps from his phone...I asked him what his fridge costed...2K!

Hard to say what to go with as everybody bought everybody. We grabbed a LG fridge after the door rotted off the GE in less than three years where the water dispenser was located. The fridge was still working I will give it that. I need to know what kind of bratwurst before I make the 14 hour drive.

Charlie, your purchase of a scratch and dent unit.....very smart move.....especially the price. Do you really care or need to communicate with your refrigerator or freezer through WIFI when your not home....not for me. My doctor friend and his brother purchased two Traulsen refrigerators @ over $7,000 each. They both have had many issues over the past three years. I tease him all the time when we talk.

Yeah....if you are running a bed and breakfast, the commercial units might be a wise choice, but the room required for commercial units, energy usage, and noise, along with the heat they put out...not for me. We regularly haul Sub Zero/ Wolf products...they would be nice to have living the jet setting lifestyle, but I do not have that kind of coin, and do not travel in circles where I need to impress.

Knock wood, we have a fridgidaire freezer that I won in a sales contest 38 years ago, still going strong. And yep, the only trouble I've had is when I forgot to lock it and the door wasn't quite closed.

We have a GE that is 13 years old and I expect it to outlive me. Icemaker quit but it was cheap to fix. Whirlpool dishwasher, washer and dryer, and Induction range. Few to no issues. Boss got the entire Viking kitchen. Always something broken. Luckily, his wife doesn't cook. We inherited the GE freezer from my mother in law. It was 10 years old when we got it 20 years ago. Only issue is that someone keeps leaving the door open and turning off the alarm.

Back in the nineties, I attended an auction where the couple had been in an assisted living facility for decades. When the furniture and appliances were uncreated there was a collective gasp as they were brought forth. Everything was from the fifties, and the refrigerator had the large Gold Chevron on the front... immaculate, and started cooling immediately... the bidding was furious. At the same time, I used to deliver to Emil Villa’s Hickory pit in Marin County, they had a chest freezer from the fifties they still used, as big as a car, probably not very energy efficient, but it still worked great. Them old appliances were built like a tank.

Ovens going into cleaning cycles while cooking a pot roast. The whole kitchen sounding alarms and lit up like a Christmas tree at three in the morning. Best not to get to many bells and whistles or pick from the middle of the line up.

I must state, for the record, after owning many refrigerators and freezers over the years, the VERY WORST brand was a Maytag side-by-side. Cost me around $2,000.00 and lasted exactly one year. Yes, the warranty was up. I will NEVER buy another product of theirs again.

I use to be in the appliance business many moons ago, in fact that's where I first drove a truck (well a 20' bobtail anyway). I also use to do minor work and repair on some along with always keeping my ears open to learn. Here's a little what I learned and experienced, the more gadgets on any appliance the more things fail because in manufacturing they skimp on what needs to be to save money to put all that other needless crap in'em. Besides, does anybody really need all that fancy shamcy crapola they put on and in new appliances nowadays. Come on! Check whats inside your frig from your phone, REALLY? I think Americans need to get a grip, how lazy do you want to be and at a price to choke a maggot no less. I've had refrigerators from the year I was born work great till I got rid of them (out of stupidity I might add). Frigidaire's have always been the best, never had a problem with them BUT, I always took care of things I've owned. Making sure there coils and door seals where kept clean and didn't bang them around, slam doors, and let my children climb on the inside to reach something, etc. etc. Lets face it, you want it to last ya gotta take care of it. But, I do realize failure is built into manufacturing nowadays so that boosts the reason even more of taking care of your things so as not to have to replace them so often. And skip the Fancy Shamcy do-dad crap cause there only there to sell the POS! Take Heed, Don't buy into Big Business's Propaganda that you need these cockamamie things. You'll not only save yourself money but, piece of mind. If more people would reject Big Business's BS they might not be in control of this country so much.
Hey, I've been up since 3:30AM, did you expect anything less from me?

Well stated Ron^^^^^^^^^. My fridges are are the most basic you can get. No bells and whistles just a 20cf over under Kenmore. I'm waiting to see how the new fridges with R-290 (propane) pan out. I have had to deal with the commercial versions and the extra steps to make repairs to be safe really costs the consumer some money. I have gotten it down to less time after getting a few under my belt and am more comfortable working on them but my fear is someone is not going to pay attention and take a shortcut and be seriously injured or burn someone's place down.

Yeah, my buddy that repairs appliances told me that the energy efficiency standards keep pushing the products to where a unit is more prone to fail, a circuit board failure can result in a cost prohibitive repair. I agree with the nonsense about Wi-Fi.. my outbound supervisor was telling me how cool it is that he can change the temps from his phone... I asked him how often he does it... “never”. Some Washing machines have a separate mini unit for delicates...try to find parts for that specific unit...not to the mention labor, good luck!
When we bought our first stove, we went cheap, bought the kind you would find in a cheap apartment that thing sucked, the oven was way off... my grandma regulated heat better in her wood fired stove.
This fridge has the ice maker and through the door water, you can adjust the temps from the digital panel, but that is it.
Pretty good reviews... Reading some reviews, people can really be dumb. One woman complained that the refrigerator warms a few degrees after the door is open...

We have a subzero refridge, bought it 12 years ago before their prices went nuts, and my wife able to get it wholesale. Terrific, especially since it has 2 compressors, and they're both on top where you can get at them to clean the coils and airfilter without having to pull the Damn thing away from the wall, and the airflow is good for longevity.

Love the Wolf residential stove but had to settle for Whirlpool AccuBake 5 gas burner...got it on a scratch/dent sale for $250.00 cause someone had turned a knob and bent the metal prong going to the knob...I can live with it and the stove is exactly what I wanted along with a 32"X22"X9''deep single hole sink made out of some kind of fiber/acrylic stoneware that takes big pots and you can almost bounce a glass off of. Cost over $200.00 but worth it to me to be able to sit pots in or wash the small dog, too.

Being a refrigeration mechanic most of my life, the simpler the design, the fewer failures. If it's built by humans, it can and will fail.
