Some great pipe smoking by Edward G. Robinson here. JimInks I love how he’s always setting his pocket on fire! Me, too. I watch the movie in part just to see that when it happens.

Gods and Generals was a prequel to Gettysburg. Both were based on books by the same author, Jim Sharra. You would love it.

Cary Grant and Melvyn Douglas smoke and fiddle with their pipes frequently in Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948). Great movie and I love Myrna Loy in this and the Thin Man films.

Funny thing is, since this thread started I'm looking at old movies to see where there might be a pipe on display. Didn't the Philadelphia story with cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn show her father smoking a pipe? I haven't seen it in a while so will have to back a nd watch it again.

I was watching the Stranger the other day and I noticed that Mr. Wilson breaks his pipe in the first scene, and his continued mistreatment of the taped together pipe is kind of a running joke throughout the film. I wonder if it was an improvisation by EGR.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Been years since I watched this cheap and campy film. Hell of a chunk of wood there.

When I watch a modern Retro piece, I give them a fail in continuity if it doesn't include some pipe smokers.

I’ve often wondered what Rocky smoked. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed him packing a bowl. As for other pipe smoking in entertainment, here goes: ‘M’ who headed the double o unit in the James Bond movies was usually smoking a pipe. I’ve noticed a round pipe rack on his desk in several of the films. James Bond was a cigarette smoker, but smoked a pipe in ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’. Lee Van Cleef smoked one in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Google isn't saying a word

Google has a lot of information on pipe smokers. In fact, it appears that the entirety of Western Culture and Civilization was created by pipe smokers. Maybe that's why people don't like our culture and civilization any more?

Whenever I watch basically ANY Italian film from like the beginning of film until like pretty much the late 90s/early 2000s there are pipe smokers. I haven't spent much time (really any) in Italy, but it seems that the culture really held on there well. Has anyone here been back to Italy recently, whats it like there now? Obviously Savinelli/Brebbia/Castello/etc etc is/was/forever will be I hope giant there. Basically any major, wise character is a pipe smoker. This even crosses over to the horror genre, which is a favorite of mine. Even the really ghastly horror, like the Lucio Fulci films in the 70s. I always found that to be kind of entertaining. Oh, blood, gore. Look at the professor and his pipe. A calm scene for about 60 seconds, back to severe violence. Alright, Italy!

Don't forget all the Sherlock Holmes movies (1940's) with Nigel Bruces pipe in just about ALL scenes. Sherlock did his best but not as much as Dr. Watson!

Movies staring the great Spanish pianist and conductor José Iturbi are very entertaining and he smokes a pipe in just about every scene! There are probably more photos of Iturbi with a pipe than without. www.imdb.com/name/nm0411826/

Carroll O’Connor smokes a pipe in his TV show ‘In the Heat of the Night’. He was a producer and writer (under pseudonym) of the show as well. www.imdb.com/name/nm0005279/

I’m watching The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), which features an actor portraying President Ford. There are no pipes evident in any of his scenes, which is a major cinematic omission as Ford smoked 10 bowls a day. Footnote: he lived to age 93.

In jaws there were a couple of scenes. When all the people go ape loading up the boats for the big shark hunt the harbor master comes out puffing on a pipe and when the chief is on the beach talking to the press one of the fellas is puffing too.

We watched Nosferatu the other night and I think it was Hutter that was smoking a Bavarian pipe that had to be a yard long. Hard to miss even in the darkness of the movie.

The rear light of one of the BMW X5’s looks like a cross section of a pipe! Sort of a Billiard with a chin. Maybe a straight Castello Shape 55? I was stuck behind one of these on my way to play the score to ‘Casablanca’ with the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum. In fact, it looks so much like a pipe I wonder if it isn’t deliberate?

Okay, I'm reviving a necro-thread. Many forums would ostracize me for such behavior, but I can't resist.
I've been trying to figure out what pipe Lee Van Cleef smoked in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. It seems to be agreed that he smoked a Wellington, which makes sense based on the the flatter-topped band and the funky stem which matches Wellingtons, but not Petersons. But I haven't been able to find a Wellington with that exact shaped bowl. On the other hand, his bowl is a dead ringer for a Peterson 309.
So that's my boring contemplation on a Sunday night while trying to survive my girlfriend watching the 'Charlies Angels' movie.

In my all time favorite, Captains Courageous, Lionel Barrymore smokes his pipe upside down ,through a storm at sea. Near the end of the movie he's at home ,by his fireplace, he offers David Nivan some "stout tobacca" from his jar.
