I've seen pipe smoking from time to time in film and television. I figured in this changing world it would be interesting to point out pipe smoking in those forms of entertainment as we see them or remember them. I know its been mentioned a few times but I thought this thread could be one to keep it in one place. Or maybe I'm just easily amused when I see it. Never the less, this idea came to me as I was watching The Rockford Files. In season 2, Episode 1 Rockford's father "Rocky" is seen smoking a pipe. I wonder what blend he's smoking.

Noah Beery Sr was an actor that smoked cigars in some of his roles, and raised tobacco among other crops in the San Fernando valley around 1917, his son Noah Jr. undoubtedly was around tobacco growing up....anyone's guess as to what he smoked.

I’ve often wondered what Rocky smoked. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed him packing a bowl. As for other pipe smoking in entertainment, here goes:
‘M’ who headed the double o unit in the James Bond movies was usually smoking a pipe. I’ve noticed a round pipe rack on his desk in several of the films.
James Bond was a cigarette smoker, but smoked a pipe in ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
Lee Van Cleef smoked one in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

James Bond was a cigarette smoker, but smoked a pipe in ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’. I don't know how controversial this opinion is, but that was one of the better Bond films.

Jason - It was up there. I have no doubt it would be ranked first had Connery played Bond. Lazenby wasn’t bad, he just wasn’t Connery. He (SC) should of either stayed on or not gone back to do Diamonds Are Forever. That one was very disappointing. I’m not even going to discuss Never Say Never Again.

In The Quiet Man, which is set in Ireland, several characters are smoking pipes which make me wonder if they are all Peterson Pipes and a Peterson Tobacco? BTW it’s one of my all time favorite films.

"Inglorious Basterds" pipe scene is my favorite. The acting by both men in this scene is very intense. That pipe is also intense.

Go on YouTube and watch Sherlock Holmes and the House of Fear. Lots of piping in that one.

There's a fair amount of pipe smoking in the Hobbit movies and probably the Lord of the Rings movies, as well.

Check out the new Maigret movies. They stay true to the character, and so there is a LOT of pipe smoking by Maigret. Apart from the pipe smoking, they are amazing movies. Extremely well done. I've only read a few Maigret stories, and pipe smoking was probably more central to his character than pipes were to Sherlock Holmes.

I remember Lee Van Cleef smoking a pipe in numerous movies. I was just watching One the other night and I have the exact same pipe he was smoking.

Sam Elliot smoked a pipe in God's and Generals, Kevin Costner smoked that little Devil Anse constantly in Hatfield and McCoys, Chuck Norris' retired ranger friend played by LQ Jones in Lone Wolf McQuade smoked one regular too.

Pipe smoking was a useful device in film and television back in the day... it strongly indicated something about the character...

Was reminded of this from Ghostbusters 2. I'll just assume he's smoking Haunted Bookshop.

I've only read a few Maigret stories, and pipe smoking was probably more central to his character than pipes were to Sherlock Holmes. They are good but if you get a chance, watch one of those made with John Gabin as Maigret. They were in French, which I can understand what with my father being Canadienne, but I'm sure they have some with sub-titles.

Watched The Stranger a couple of days ago, Edward G. Robinson, 1946. Got so mad he broke his pipe & smoked it all through the movie with white medical/adhesive tape holding it together.

My dad is Cajun enough to still speak French fluently, or at least Cajun French. However, he will not watch it, unless I can convince him that is really a Gunsmoke episode with one hell of a plot twist!!!
