And, by all the sales, I mean there aren't any. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong, but something's up lately. Almost every sale in 2019 has been lackluster at best. Last year, we were seeing 20%-25% regularly for bulk blends, and a lot more 20% for tins. I think the last 20% was for GLP a couple months ago. Now, it seems 10%-15% is the norm, which hardly constitutes a "sale". Especially if you're not buying $100 of tobacco. Even then, 10% off $100 ain't much. I feel like something's going on here, but not sure what...

I don't know. I hate "The Sky Is Falling" stuff, but if there's something to it, maybe they're trying to eek out as much as they can. I don't know. Did taxes go up for them? Someone more knowledgeable than I will hopefully chime in.

The tobacco companies are making money hand over fist. Every time they get a stock of something in it sells out immediately. They have no incentive for a sale.

Sales throughout the year have been dwindling over the last 10 years. I don't remember seeing any Independence Day sales for 3 or 4 years.

Well, I remember when I was in a hurry to get a nice full cellar and made the mistake of buying a bunch of stuff everyone recommended and found that 50% of my cellar was crap I wouldn't smoke........no matter how long it aged. Be wise and buy what you know you like and will smoke anytime. Leave the experimenting with new blends after you feel you have enough cellared to last at least a few months.

I'm just trying to reach a point where if I want something specific to smoke, I know I have it. And also the point that if I want something new, I have it as well.

I think I'm at the place where I can make some good educated guesses at what I should stock up on. Tastes change, so it'd be a bunch of VAs, VaPers, DF based, Balkan/lighter bulks. And, tins that I know I'd like to have more of later on down the road. elric, I don't envy your situation. And, you're right, I probably shouldn't complain. There's always another shoe to wear.

Why it's wise to order one ounce to sample before committing to a pound. I've been rather lucky buying untried blends - Tobaccoreviews, our JimInks in particular, is a huge help in 'guessing' what I might like - Haven't picked a blend that I don't like yet [touch wood] Maybe it's because after initially ordering aromatics (3 good ones fortunately - Mark Twain is particularly good) I've since mainly ordered uncased blends.

A surfeit of stock stimulates sales. Simply sayin'.... true. Also, "King Henry I was said to have died after gorging on a surfeit of lampreys while King John is supposed to have fined the City of Gloucester the equivalent of £250,000 for failing to deliver his Christmas lamprey pie."

Cramp, I’ve been thinking the same thing about the “sales” this year. I can’t get too excited about 10%.

No matter the opinions of stocking up wisely and prices compared to other parts of the world, the fact remains that when 2019 rang in, the sales dropped hard. It wasn’t a slow decline, they were cut to nearly nothing in an instant. Last year there were sales of 20%, 25% and even 30% off. As of this year, a sale of 15% off is a big deal and in the rare occasion when something does hit 20% or more, that product has gone up in cost so much that the sale price is the retail price of last year. Taking the time to go back to the information of years past, last year wasn’t uncommon either. Sales were good and inviting for years.
So with that said, this isn’t a complaint thread or a thread about young people ready to throw their money at any sale they see. It’s a thread simply pointing out the sudden lack of sales. It’s not just one or two places doing this, it’s everybody and it happened all at once.
It just seems rather odd the timing and how all the sales at all the shops seems to be on the same level.

My original intent was to call this "no sakes over 15%" as strange. I wonder if it has to do with all the rain/hurricanes last year, and low tobacco yields. I thought, though, that tobacco is generally stockpiled to age for several years. I dunno.

elric , I don't envy your situation. And, you're right, I probably shouldn't complain. There's always another shoe to wear. My only regret is that I had never even thought to order tobacco from O/S until last year. On the down side there are so many blends that I'll never get to try. On the bright side, I'm a 'half glass full' kind-of-guy & feel so fortunate to have at least 40lb of baccy cellared. [When I first heard that the laws re; the importation of tobacco laws were changing, my gut sense told me to concentrate on buying tobacco. I'm relieved to have listened] Best of all, I've actually got a variety from which to choose, something that I did not have before. Can you believe that before last year I'd never tasted an English blend or a VaPer? With the $ exchange rate + postage I pay a lot more than you would. Having said that, a pound of Peter Stokkebye or Sutliff blends cost me less than a 50g tin here. Ludicrous huh? I'm saving money big time. So I just wanted you all to know; despite my whinging & belly-aching, I actually feel very fortunate & grateful for what I have. Especially compared to my compatriots.

I always like the price of Daughters and Ryan tobaccos... even better with any discount offered. My first order from the U.S. was a pound of D&R Windsail, an uncased Virginia. On sale at the time, it was $20usd. The postage cost more, lol. It's nice straight & an excellent blending tobacco. Some people complain that D&R tobacco is 'too dry' (They haven't heard of Boveda packs?) Not me, I thought it was just right. In response to these complaints, one of the owners said that he sold tobacco, not water. Excellent attitude. Moist tobacco is an annoyance.

Heard it from the man himself, Mark Ryan...come to the West Coast Pipe show in November, he will be there.
Dried out tobacco and having to re-hydrate is one thing, having a tinned tobacco that is ready to smoke is another, and a hydration coin if preferred, will bring it up quickly to a more moist level if one prefers without any degradation of flavor.
Opening a tin of some D&R tobacco's is like watching a Chia-pet in time lapse, FF.
At least that is my experience.

P&C had a 15% off sale a couple months back. I got a pound of ODF for about $42. That is pretty fantastic in my book. Companies need to operate their business they arent obligated to have big sales. It definitely beats the prices at my local Tinderbox which was a 3.5oz tin for $30.
