My Social, Menu, and Financial Advisor has been threatening a basement remodel for some time; it kicked into high gear. Our basement is home to my “office”, bookcases, files, tobacco central, pipe storage, pool table, etc. the past 15 years has seen quite an in increase in accumulation. Now it all has to be moved, thinned down, sorted, disposed of, and boxed up, not necessarily in that order. Bottom line is I’m simplifying my basement space and ridding myself of significant burden in terms of all the crap I’ve been saving for 46 years of married life and two careers; it is past time. The bad news is I’ll be losing my sweet repurposed entertainment center tobacco cellar and pipe shelves. The good news is that I’m gaining a new 48 pipe, built to spec, wall cabinet; ordered it today, and the center sections of a large shelf unit with sliding barn-like doors. The SMFA thinks she is “hiding” my tobacco, I think she’s hit on a great solution to keeping the cellar in the dark. A win/win. While it is a significant pain right now and for the next several months, it will be nice going forward. And a good opportunity to reorganize the cellar into a more accessible state. First World Problems.

Should be easier to manage after the remodel.

Sounds like a really great project ,and a big job too. One nice thing {other than the end result} is that whenever you do a clean-out, you always run across things you haven't seen in years...
lighters ,old coins ,pens, pipe nails and tampers, and God knows what all will show up...it's one of the great adventures of ownership...we await the photos!

Cleaning out my desk drawers I discovered some Series EE Savings Bonds from 2004 that I'd forgotten about and 41 ounces of silver in "coins". Note that while I'm involved in the preparation for the work, I'm not doing the actual construction work involved. I have the skills to do the work but it would take me much longer, eat up all my vacation time, likely wreck my back (moving those pool table slates is not a fun job), and in the end, not look as professional as it could or should. Given this is as close to a man cave as I'll get, I want it to look the best it can!

Treasures for all...hate to have to pack stuff up and move...would rather give an organ than have to move again.

I would love to take on a project like that. Not the cleanup, but the remodel part wouldn't it be wonderful if we all lived near one-another, so we could all help with projects like this...hundreds of likeminded folks, working together to organize and remodel the collections of tobacco ,pipes lighters ,pocketknives ,and whatall …
mountains, and mountains of stuff ...the amount of beer ,and munchies alone, needed for a job like that , is mindboggling.

I would love to take on a project like that. Not the cleanup, but the remodel part I would take you up on it Josh but I'm afraid the commuting miles would wreck my budget! But it would be fun to help each other on projects from time to time!

It definitely would. If I was single I would travel and work around the country. By the time my kids are grown and I'm able to get away I will be ready to call it quits anyway.

Good luck. It’s bitter sweet. It’s a pain to clear a storage space, but you find cool stuff you forgot you had.

That would be a great thing - to live near each other and be able to help each other out with things like that. I often envy the relationship between pepesdad1 and roadsdiverged, or between Cramptholomew and McWiggins. You guys have something to cherish. As for you, kxg... This sounds like it could be amazing. Please do take pics when you're done. Also take pics before you start and during too. Show us the whole evolution of this, please.

A little further explanation of the project. We are replacing the carpet with laminate flooring, sheet rocking the outside walls, and replacing several pieces of furniture, including a new desk for my office space that will be far more functional than the current “L” shaped unit. We will replace a couple of the lights including a new fit for purpose pool table light. The other lights will get a new finish applied. The two old escape windows will be replaced with more functional windows. When the pool table is reassembled (professionally) it will get a new deep green felt covering. We’ve had it 26 years and is it time. I’ll keep you posted.

Look at all that space!!! You could fit my whole house in one of those photos. Yea Paddy, I’ve some history with this house. It is young by your standards, built in the mid 1960’s. My best friends parents built the house and they moved away from the old neighborhood where we were children, but only a half mile or so away. When his widowed mother died in 2001 we were fortunate enough to be able to purchase it as my friend and his siblings had all moved far away. The original builder was old school and the house is exceptionally well constructed. There is a large and wonderful back yard with some nice trees, which on the high plains of Kansas is unusual. The basement is only under half the house, which is regrettable, but still a nice space and in tornado country a good safe spot. While we’ve done some updating to the upstairs over the years, the basement only had a coat of paint, new carpet and an old bar removed when we moved in. It is time for a good going over down there to make it a more livable space. while my wife and I have lived in a number of houses during our 46 years of married life, we’ve lived in this one the longest and I hope it is our last. I am very comfortable here. That said, you never know what lies ahead!

Progress! Insulation and sheet rock are up; the taping and mudding begin tomorrow. That will be a few days of dust. It is moving along nicely.

An update: the drywall is finished and the walls painted. The flooring will be laid the first week of sept. Waiting on windows to be delivered and installed. New ceiling tiles will replace any damaged tiles. Several new furniture pieces have showed up. The large bookcase (future home of most of my cellar) arrived in two very large boxes. I them on the front walkway after work one day last week; no call from the freight co. as promised. As much as they weighed, no one was going to “porch pirate” them. All the pieces have been moved into the garage for assembly after the floor is down. That might take awhile, the assembly that is. today’s project was assembling my new desk. Last night I unboxed it in the back of my pickup as it was too heavy for my wife and I to carry downstairs. It took me a good half hour to move all the pieces downstairs. The assembly manual was 20 pages of detailed instructions and diagrams. The directions were actually quite good, all the parts fit together as described, and all the various fasteners were labeled clearly. Five hours of assembly later the desk is complete. Now it’s time for a smoke and drink!
