I have not smoked a pipe in several weeks due to an allergic reaction to the sun caused by a medication leaving me with a sore mouth and lips. I smoked this pipe last night and I was really looking forward to it because I smoked my favorite aromatic and remembered the experience from the last time I smoked this pipe with Family Reserve. It was horribly bitter! The pipe tasted bitter before I lit it and the tobacco tasted bitter through the entire bowl; this pipe hadn't been smoked since my post about how awesome it was.
Should I de-ghost it?

Could be that any meds you took might have affected your taste buds. JMHO

^ This. My mom had to take allergy medicine for what they thought was an allergic reaction. This was last year. I forget what kind. I know it was X or Z something. Her taste buds still aren't functioning properly. Hopefully your experience is different.

Did you clean the pipe after the last smoke?
I have a falcon which has a bowl that won't budge stuck to it. I remembered that I couldn't unscrew the bowl AFTER the second smoke, which tasted horrible. I think it's cos I didn't clean it.
Either that or the meds. Have you tried the same aromatic in a different pipe?

I always stuff a tissue or piece of paper towel in the bowl and a cleaner in the stem for an hour or so after I smoke and then remove it all and clean the stem and the shank. I was shocked at how bad it tasted!
I plan to try another pipe tonight and I will just have to hope that the meds haven't ruined my taste buds.

Me also..the pain meds I take have pretty much killed all taste unless it is really, really strong...just a thought like the others.

Yes, try a different pipe, and flush out the bitter one with hot tap water, dry, and rest overnight.
With hope for restored taste buds. Good luck!

I am going to go ahead and de-ghost it even though it appeared to be smoked but a handful of times when I bought it from Tim West. It just had a nasty odor and what's a couple cotton balls and an ounce of alcohol?
Let's hope tonight's experience is better

Update. Although I didn't get a chance to smoke last night, I did administer the alcohol and cotton balls to the pipe and the cotton ball is almost black this morning! I guess
I am really lucky that I got that one awesome experience out of it when I first got the pipe

I smoked my favorite aromatic last night and it just didn't taste like it used to, I hope this issue goes away soon! I am going to try some non-aromatic today and see if maybe my taste buds have swung the other way

Sorry about that Stone. I take a double handful of pills every night at 9:00pm and promptly make a strong espresso to get rid of the taste.

Sorry about that Stone. I take a double handful of pills every night at 9:00pm and promptly make a strong espresso to get rid of the taste. Life has been a bit of a ride lately. I have smoked a pipe twice in about three months and didn't enjoy either time. It tastes like liking an ashtray full of cigarette ashes.
I battled the initial issues of the mouth rash for nearly two months before the doctor decided to kill it with prednisone which rid my entire body of inflammation which made me feel like super-man for a few days but also weakened my immune system which allowed me to catch something from my grandson which developed into bronchitis which has lingered for 2 1/2 weeks.
And all when I was just starting to get the hang of pipe smoking!
Thank God I never really got sick but I am tired of sitting in my man cave looking at all the luscious stuff I want to try

I will struggle through it
Back in the day before golf balls were perfected, I used to buy 10 dozen before the season started and I would make a mixture of warm water and salt until a ball would float, give it a spin and see how lop-sided it was. I would then separate those balls into three categories; The perfect balls would be reserved for tournament play; the slightly unbalanced balls would be for every day play; and the balls that were horribly lop-sided, I would give to my brother in law This sounds like a tobacco you give to your brother in law

Tell me, do cigars taste different to you? I have only had one cigar since all of this and it tasted great. It's odd, all my pipes now smell like a nasty ashtray.

Try the very hot tap water flush. It simply works, and may be a solution for you.

Also, your golf ball sorting procedures are similar to what bench rest shooters do with their bullets. Your BIL catagory could only improve my game. 👍👍😁😎🤠

When I played, if the ball went into the 90 degree quadrant containing the cup I considered it a good shot. I whispered praise under my breath and mimicked soft applause. I ran across my Championship trophy in the storeroom last week, but my wife refuses to allow in in the house until I get rid of some pipes. (It was a church scramble and my contribution was to sink the final 45 ft put.)

Update! My taste buds are coming back to normal and I am enjoying the pipe again!
Things are not completely back to normal as some tobacco still tastes like an ashtray and Miller Lite tastes nasty after the first 24 but it's coming!
On an even more positive note, I am enjoying real tobacco more than the aromatics now

Most interesting test for golf balls. Since all the balls I own I have found in a year living next to a golf course, my only test is for bounce: Drop a reference ball and another from the same height. If one doesn't bounce the same as the reference ball, it goes to The First Tee. (Organization that helps kids)
