Listen, I'm well aware there are "better" (totally subjective of course) bottles of Scotch than Johnnie Walker. Johnnie Walker Black is the worlds best selling Scotch brand though, and to me that says they do something right.
For me, it's tasty, reliable, and reasonably priced for a go-to brand, so I'll stick with it and save the others for special occasions or when someone wants to buy me a drink.

Evan Williams (affectionately known as "Evil" Williams) 17$ and tastes as good as any 25-30$ bottle. 100$ Booze isn't something on my priority list. Goes too quickly.

I have learned that just as there are pipe snobs, there are whisky snobs. To each his own. Don't knock the man who likes his Evan Williams and a corn cob pipe full of Half and Half. More power to him, I say. It's all good.

Who is calling who a snob? lol Yes not everyone has the palate, the money or even the desire to explore such things. I for one do not have the money . My palate is also not close to that of a whiskey or blend master, but I can tell the difference in quality, at least to some degree, amongst some whiskeys, whiskys, pipe tobacco, cigars etc. Sometimes, I also enjoy the rougher, maybe younger less sophisticated/expensive etc. brands as well. I think before throwing the snob comment around , one should take a breath and realize that what one perceives to be true is not always the case (or maybe more subtle than first thought etc.). I made my comment about Johnny Walker black in a playful way, hoping that it would be perceived as such. Oh well I guess I failed in my attempt with some. In any case, I say enjoy what you like, that is one way in which freedom and diversity can thrive. However, if you ask for a recommendation (which is the point of the thread.), I will first try to discern your likes and then advise accordingly. Certainly I did not mean to cause such a fuss. lol PS Is it true that there are no objective ways or methods to qualify or quantize taste? There is a physical basis to our experience and an entire field of science that tries to both, qualify and quantize, taste in its unique similarities and variations. The picture is far more complex than a single statement summary. For the record I have enjoyed Johnny Walker black etc. on occasions.

I can't get over that price for the JW Black. When I was 17 it was $16.

On another note... Did you get a hole in one, stone ? Nope! I got so hammered Friday night that I struggled to play golf Saturday. I made an 8 and a 10 and shot 77 and 76 and lost by 6 strokes. But, I beat my son and my nephew

I knew it at 14 as I was taking inventory for 3 chains of liquor stores at that time. By 16 I was buying 2 fifths of Schenley Reserva and 2 cartons of Marlborough cigarettes every day. The store owners knew that I was picking it up for my older brother who owned the inventory service. By 17 I was buying it for myself as I preferred Old Granddad Bond to the Canadian swill my brother drank. I have been drinking whiskey for 54 years and I have never gotten drunk on it once. Straight up or on the rocks as the mood strikes me. I have had the $10 stuff and Johnnie Walker Blue and everything in between and I know what's good and what I like.

Who won in the golf? ๐ A close friend won but then everyone in the tournament was a close friend. It was the 40th year of a group of guys I went to high school with, their sons, friends, etc. Not a single person broke par, the golf course was incredibly difficult but, as always, we had a great time and I am already looking forward to next years event!

I drank the JW Green Label in the late 60's and I think it was $18. Down the street it's $66 today. I am satisfied with Dewars for blended, but I always keep a bottle of Chivas which is my favorite. Considering the inflation in the last 50 years, it should be $128. So it's cheaper. But I didn't have anything else to spend my money on and I never drank that much, so no big deal. My bottle of Laphroaig Triple Wood is almost empty after 2.5 years.

Actually, it is my contention that to describe taste (palate, the ability to process flavors etc.) as merely subjective is too simple an explanation, read the PS question/statement. I believe folks should challenge their thinking and tastes. It can be quite enlightening. However, if they choose not to, another complex subject, I am good with that as well.
I took the snob comment in humor. Responding as such with an explanation, I was hoping to help any errant souls who found themselves on the path to misunderstanding๐.

We are in agreement then. I will continue however, to "throw" around snob comments as I see fit. They exist in abundance. Everywhere. They are encountered every day.

Youse guys have driven me to drink. OGD 114 in a Waterford Lismore tumbler. Water on the side. I do believe that this is the best bourbon I have ever tasted. And it's less than $30.๐๐๐๐๐ค The Glass and the whiskey are $100 together. ๐

I don't have much to add, but I liked me some bourbon back in my drinking days. I splurged on a bottle of Woodford Reserve one night, and found it 4/5 empty the next morning. What a hangover. That brown liquor, I tell ya. Twas good stuff though, from what I remember, or don't remember.
I never got into Scotch. Canadian was awful, and never liked Irish. Sorry, Paddy. Bourbon has a distinct caramel sweetness to it that I liked.
When I was 16, I used to raid my girlfriend's parent's liquor cabinet, pour a little of everything into a tall glass, and cover it in orange juice. We called it the "fumanchu".
You may now continue with this thread.

I have drank more Bushmills when I was younger, but I never enjoyed it. I love Jamison Gold, Redbreast 12, and mostly Teeling Small Batch which is kind of new. Tullamore Dew is supposedly the best selling Irish whiskey in Europe and I certainly like it. Straight from the bottle with a bunch of friends in a circle telling stories is the absolute best way to enjoy any whiskey, but especially Irish.

I can't explain my position on whisky other than to say "I drink shots of it because people buy them for me, I buy people shots of it, and I love the memories and camaraderie that bring about those shots, but I just wish it tasted better than sauteed underwear"

I wouldn't recommend any of the Islay scotches for someone who isn't a whiskey drinker. They're like liquid Latakia. Haha
Johnny is good suggestion. Very smooth. Maybe a highland single malt like Glenfiddich. They tend to be piney and pear like and get softer, fruitier the older you go. It was my standard bottle when I started drinking scotch.
My advice would be to get a bottle of Knob Creek, a bottle of Jameson, and a bottle of Glenfiddich 12. It'll cost roughly $100 and you can have three times the fun!
