Very nice...congratulations on making your very own, Sam...keep it up, you may be a supplier on day when tobacco becomes even more difficult to get.

Looks great! That 515 is great stuff. On its own, stoved, pressed, stoved and pressed or even used in creating other blends. So good, so versatile.

Thank you guys. pepesdad1 I want to learn how to make cigars and blends from whole leaf like Darin. Now that would be a way to keep up with demand when the FDA takes over the world!

Wolfman just took a cake of Virginia, cube cut and Dark strong Kentucky from the press. Going to break it back down into ribbon then press it for a second time.

Pressed it for 5 to 7 days, depending on the dryness of the tobacco. With the cake I just took out, I will break it down let set for a couple of days then repress for about 5 days. Btw these Virginia's went from a light brown to a dark brown while in the press.

Wolfman I got your email, but since there's a thread, I'll respond here. The pressing does change the blend. I've found it smooths out rough edges, and darkens flavors. It's not like instant aging, but it does do SOME of the things aging does. As to the fresh hay/grass thing, I can't say, since I haven't done an FVF plug (which to me is sharp and bitey out of the package). But, the other Virginias I've pressed have definitely mellowed out. Oh, leave it alone for a few days before you bust into it.

I have had FVF plug on a few occasions. It is just fine as a smoke but good grief the prep time and dry time is a pita. I like the looks of your plug much better. Should break up nicely.

You know what... I think I've found the tobacco to purchase this month.
FVP it is!

Well done! But I thought plugs were made from whole leaf, and cake from cut leaf. (?)

Wanting to experiment by making my own Kake, using homegrown baccy mixed with commercial blends, I recently bought a 'Stainless Steel' noodle maker. What I received was a 100% plastic noodle maker.
It's the latest Chinese ebay scam. They advertise one thing but one needs to choose an option to buy the very thing that they're advertising but at a much higher price. I've been scammed by Chinese sellers before. They reply 'We fix' endlessly until the time to make an official complaint expires. Never again. Either full refund or let ebay sort it out.
After several emails, I pointed out that they were employing deceptive practices and that ebay should be notified, I got a full refund and get to keep the plastic noodle maker, lol.
It will serve the purpose of experimenting, making small plugs of Kake.

I believe it is time to take this project to the next level, taste trials. Having many subjects here at the patch provides you with a unique opportunity to see just how well your product has been executed. So the next logical step is to send out samples to each of us with a questionnaire that provides a proper measure of our experiences and thoughts. You are sure lucky to have such a willing base, so do not delay. Q
PS The samples should be large enough to test in different pipes on different days etc. to obtain a better idea of the plug's value.

qmechanics I’m planning to send some samples after my next project. I’m going to produce a Plug version of RD Mix (that’s roadsdiverged ‘s creation). He was generous to share his receipt and I’m ordering the tobaccos today. I’ll keep everyone apprised of my progress.

You and Ken both have the "recipe." Theres a sample going out to Jason, Qmechanics, and Jim today. I put enough in Jason's to share with Scott, I even wrote it on his bag I want opinions on it

Well done! But I thought plugs were made from whole leaf, and cake from cut leaf. (?) That's correct. Plug is from whole leaf. What most people are making is crumble cake.

Technically it's a crumble cake. BUT these are pressed to the point that they dont crumble at all.

Maybe we should coin a new term for this one: how about a "puck"?
Thanks, JBD.

Maybe we should coin a new term for this one: how about a "puck"? Thanks, JBD. it's definitely a puck. It's not a cake, and it's not a whole leaf plug, but it's closer to a plug than a cake. Some of them are as dense as a plug of Salty Dogs.

Has anyone tried to bake the baccy before pressing? I've read of some manufacturers that heat and/or steam while under pressure. So, before, during or after all seem fair game.

Has anyone tried to bake the baccy before pressing? McWiggins stoved and then I stoved some stuff. Ball jar, lid on loose, 200 for 4 hours. Don't do it with Perique. Don't ask me how I know. Best results for me have been 515 and/or Sutliff Red Ribbon. McWiggins did some Burley and 515 that turned out great.

Maybe we should coin a new term for this one: how about a "puck"? Thanks, JBD. Not too sure "puck" would be a good name. About ten years ago I made a "puck" by putting some tobacco into an oak box I made. I then put it in my 20 ton shop press and pressed the beejesus out of it. What I ended up with was something so incredibly hard that it I could not cut it no matter what I've tried. The up side though is the Canadian Hockey League is bugging me for the formula so they can make cheap replaced pucks.

Just put a puck together of:
20g Yorktown 25g 515 10g Turkish 5g Perique
Nuked for 20 seconds before pressing.
It sure smells good, let's hope it tastes as good as it smells.
