Recently I've seen a couple of posts denigrating the Old Boy, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I've got an Old Boy that I've been using for about ten years. It has been dropped, and even run through the laundry with no problems. My smoking area on the back porch is shielded from the wind, so no problems there. It's a great lighter. I keep the flame adjuster set fairly low, so no problems scorching the rims of pipes. It doesn't need to be filled very often as long as you bleed it before you fill. No lighter fluid taste - I know that Zippo fans claim that, if you use the right fuel, there's no taste, but I have not found this to be true. My only complaint is that the finish is fairly worn, but this does not affect the performance of the lighter. Sure, an Old Boy is expensive, but it's less than a pipe. Next time you have a PAD attack, consider buying the lighter instead of a pipe. You won't regret it.

I enjoy collecting lighters. I keep my butane pipe and cigar lighters at hand. As much I like my Old Boy and Unique's this Davidoff pipe lighter is my favorite.

I haven't heard many bad posts about the old boy. What I hear most is more about the cost compared to what you get or compared to what you can get much much cheaper.
P.S. I'm glad this thread is not what I first imagined.

I love mine and given the current price for this model, I got a great deal when I bought several years ago.

I love my Old Boy. I've had it about ten years and sent it in for servicing after eight years. It's been well worth the money. Highly recommended.

Echo all the above. The one John shows above is really superb. My favorite is also briar clad, but it's smooth brown. The black rusticated one is even better.

I bought a slightly blemished one from Mars Cigar that was discounted a year or two ago...it took about 4 shipments back and forth and it supposedly always worked fine on his end...on my end it always needed a match to light the fuel.
My Zippo does not need triple filtered fuel, works better in the wind than any butane, and I do not taste the fuel, and it has never scorched a rim...at $20.00, it is a kick-arse lighter and has lasted 7 years with no maintenance.
But if I was in Monaco ala James Bond, the Old boy has more flair...as long as I was inside the casino.

I recently bought a Zippo for nostalgia and high winds use. There is most definitely a fuel smell which I experience. Butane works fine for me up to about 10-12 knots, but that requires shielding the flame with hands, trees or any other handy barrier.
Of my eight or so refillable butanes, all work, no trips to repair shops. No scorched rims, even with the torch, which requires great care in using, and is not recommended.

Buy 100% Naptha by the quart ($8.00) from your local hardware store. It does not have the smell of factory Zippo fuel.

Never heard anything bad about the Old Boy. And it's not near as expensive as Dunhill, Davidoff or Dupont. I have several different lighters, including a Dunhill, two Kiribi's, a Zippo and Bics. The Dunhill is may favorite, but I only use it at home. Carry a Kiribi when I go out and Bics when I travel. Don't use the Zippo anymore as I've grown unaccustomed to the smell. But I still like to pick it up and do the one handed flip to open it.

Something about the title of this thread is disturbing.

When the Chinese lighter gets anywhere close to the five years and counting my Japanese model has, please let me know. 😁

I have bought a couple of the knockoffs, one marked Peterson and one Mr Brog. Both failed suddenly. One after 3 months and one after 2.5 years. They were great up to the point of failure. Probably worth it up to $20

If you want an authentic Old Boy, that is well and good. The IM Corona Old Boy is a Dunhill Unique knock off. If you want real deal get a Dunhill.

So who did Dunhill steal the design from a swiss company, Douglass?

That's the second time you shared this. The first time had me intrigued. The second time (just now) I bought one. Guaranteed to be here by 22nd December or my money back (although it didn't say which year).

So who did Dunhill steal the design from a swiss company, Douglass? They did not steal it from anyone. They designed and made first one in 1923 as a fuel lighter. It was the first fuel lighter made. They are still making it today only it's butane fueled. I still use The sterling Unique my father bought in London in 1946 and it's only been serviced once in 73 years. It's worked flawlessly ! I think my father paid $50.00 for it back then and that version sells for over $300.00 today. Pricey for sure but it's the original " Old Boy"

They stole/borrowed that from Greenwood and Wise. Here benzinaky.com/Dunhill_E.html . Later versions were based on Clark see the Patents under images www.clarklighters.com/ Dunhill does hold a patent for a flint striker and wick 1914 Edite. Ronson had the first butane lighter.

When the Chinese lighter gets anywhere close to the five years and counting my Japanese model has, please let me know. 😁 I’m in no way suggesting the Chinese lighters are as good as the Japanese authentic Old Boy lighters. I merely advise against paying authentic prices for what is likely knockoff quality with the “Old Boy Design” lighters. At ~$13 delivered, I paid knockoff pricing but I have knockoff expectations as well! I will try to remember to report if/when it fails.
