So.....I've been smoking pipes for many years. I have a good, though not extensive collection of pipes and have tried many tobaccos. Not going to say which because we all have our own favourites. The point I'm making is at my age..well into my 70's...I still don't always get it right. Some days I really enjoy my smoke, but occasionally feel I've got it all wrong and wonder if I should not bother ! Now I am experienced enough to know that many factors influence a good smoke. Mood, location, etc etc. Recently I have taken to a habit which some might consider odd. I will select a favourite pipe, favourite tobacco and light my pipe to get it going. Then set it aside and not relight that pipe until several hours later or even the next day. Then when I relight I seem to get a more satisfying and easier smoke. Am I alone in this habit ?!

DGT! I always have 2 or three pipe loaded and at hand that I puff on every time I sit down. If I'm busy it might take a day or more to finish them. That drying time really helps and really tastes good.

I usually do not enjoy a DGT pipe. But I do have an extremely variable smoking experience.

That can only help a moist tobacco. However if the tobacco's a bit dry, I smoke it right away.

I do this all the time. I half-finish smokes and put it on the desk and come back to them in the morning. I think a lot of it comes down to extra drying time for the tobacco, but Im not too sure.
As far as really enjoying the smoke, the most important thing for me is just to be comfortable in my chair. I no longer enjoy walking with my pipe or even taking it out in the car much. Its just too much at one time. Slow sips the recliner, thats another matter all together.
Since I've scaled back my habit to just one pipe a day, and even taking 1 and 2 day breaks in between, I've noticed a massive difference in the satisfaction of the experience.
Smokem if you gotem, UPS.

Your not alone sir, at 65 I still seem to get it wrong at least once a day. And I'll do the same, specially if I'm in the shop working on something. I'll set it down and come back to it in several hours and 9 times out of 10 I tend to enjoy it more but, its a double edge blade. For you see I enjoy it so much that there never seems to be enough left in the bowl to satisfy me, no matter how large the bowl is.

I will have to try this. So far ive been pretty neurotic about packing, smoking, and cleaning the pipe all in one go. This causes me to load smaller bowls sometimes if im limited on time or what have you.

Welcome to the forum From SoCal. I smoke em to the ash in one sitting, though I do move around a bit, Small bowls with me lasts about 10-12 minutes. My bigger bowls about 30-40 minutes. After 2 or 3 smokes, I go to the next bowl, then come back and clean them all later. 🧙🏼♂️

Good to see you back. In case anyone is wondering, DGT stands for delayed gratification technique.
I've yet to do this, but only because I have a pipe so infrequently. So when I load up a bowl, it is because I've time to have a pipe.

I always forget about this, so I just filled up with Kajun Kake and lit it up. It's not sitting for later.

Driving at work I sometimes forget to sip the Virginia's slowly, and pay the price...I do let the pipe rest, and it is not uncommon to take six hours to work my way through a bowl...I do draw the line on lighting a bowl of tobacco from the day before though...I have never had good results from that.

In 50 years of smoking I also don't have a perfect smoke and will set the pipe down to pick it up later and find it works! I've even waited till the next day and found no problem!

For me it depends on the tobacco ...aros that taste better for me are the vanilla, caramel..chocolate types that taste better to me.. these ones can handle the "toasty" notes.. think creme brulee and the toasted, browned top of the dessert. fruity ones are terrible..it is just not the same.. cube cut also does really well for me DGT and so do some flakes buy far from all..
the same goes for some cigars too..some taste great relighting after 3 or 4 hours while others if you cant finish,, forget it and toss it

I dry tobacco all the time, moisture content depends on how long. I do light a pipe and often finish it the next day but that is never the original intent, life just sometimes gets in the way. Rarely do I not enjoy the original load but it does happen and when it does I often will scrap the process and go to another blend. wasteful? one might think so but I don't see it that way. At 54 my life is too dang short to suffer the things in life that do not pleasure me. Lenticula I don't think it's just you, I think we all from time to time experience things that are just a bit off and maybe better suited to take up at another time

I have done that, sometimes it smoked great, other times.... not so much, and indeed it was rank. Watson made a clever deduction.

Agree with frogs. DGT does not work well in the swamp the humidity is just to high.

Welcome from Texas, glad you could join us!
I mostly like to pre dry if needed and smoke the whole bowl in a pretty deep meditative state. Now having a 6 month old, I have found the Delayed Gratification Technique to be quite rewarding when nap time comes around.
