First, I am a brand new pipe smoker and have not been a smoker of any type before.
I have always like the smell of the raw tobacco, even the couple I have tried so far. Latest being Lane Q1. I tried a vanilla and a peach also, by Sutliff.
I wish I tasted what I smell. The peach had the most flavor, but still more smoke flavor.
How long does it take to start tasting the tobacco better? Do I need to try a powerful flavor instead of the mild ones I have tried so far?
Open to any suggestions to learn how to taste the tobacco. I am still not sure how to get the humidity where it is supposed to be also. I thought the Lane would be ready to smoke. I might be getting a small amount of tongue burn also.

In my experience, most tobaccos do not taste how they smell. I have been a smoker for a long time and like the taste of tobacco. The taste and room note are usually two different things. Thats why when I smoke aromatics I like the ones that still have a good tobacco flavor - yet the wife doesnt complain about the smell as much. ( C & D Autumn Evening and Mac Baren's Vanilla flake are good for that. )
- Now for tasting the tobacco better, Ive learned in my time on the pipe that a slower cadence produces more distinguishable flavor. Fire up your bowl and get it lit, then just lightly puff on it enough to keep it lit. That produces the most flavor for me. Re-lights are okay so dont be afraid to let it go out.
- Ive also noted that almost all the tobacco ive had is better when its near completely dry. Not crunchy crackly dry to the point where you can hear it cracking when you're loading your pipe, but a few notches shy of that.
Im also just a beginner , so take my advice with a grain of salt , sir.

In time, sometimes it can be a couple of years, just depends on the person. And then tastes change. Although I think I can safely agree with Kerley that if you want peach taste you probably shouldn't be smoking tobacco. Granted some of the Aromatics will taste a bit like Vanilla and so on but, odds are they won't always smell like'em and you'll still get a tobacco taste of sorts cause its, wait for it! Tobacco.
Just funn'en sir but, I'm afraid there all going to have a tobacco taste at least in the background. Of course there different tobaccos and blends that change that taste just like all Ports or Cabernet's, etc. don't taste the same. So you might find one that pleases you in time. Took me a little while to find one that hit the spot and I never went by what others said was good, their taste buds aren't mine.

There's blends with Latakia, also blends with Perique..You may not like the room note of these though, but hey do have a good bit of taste. Though you may like their taste..Just something you could think about trying.

IMO...Stay away from aro's and try to get the sweetness and good flavors from the tobacco itself...Orlik Golden Sliced is a good one to get to know !!

I expect tobacco flavor and I also don't think I am going to be fooled into thinking I am eating a fresh peach from Fredricksburg. I didn't use to like IPA's, but then I learned how to start with the less hoppy ones and have frown to like them more. I also never liked gin, but found it was the juniper levels I didn't care for. They were bitter to me but I could but with less juniper flavor.
I guess I was hoping to do the same with tobacco. I have yet to experience the sweet flavor many reviews speak of. Was thinking of trying an oriental for cooler smoke.

You have to keep trying until you develop a taste for it. I took about 18 months before I really started liking the flavor of the tobacco.

Anyway, Fredericksburg peaches are going to be a thing of the past soon as all of the available real estate is being covered by new wineries and subdivisions.

A major culprit is the local B&M's steering new smokers to Aromatics and they all do this.

Try retrohaling. Draw the smoke in your mouth, and blow it out your nose. Don't inhale it. Just blow it out your nose. I kid you not. I retrohale almost 100% of the time, and it's what gives me the most flavor. I sent Casper, who's also newer to pipes, and smoking aromatics, a sampler of non-aromatic and less aromatic blends. He was blown away by the taste of the natural tobacco, and how good it was. The one that really got him going was Sutliff Virginia Slices (on sale for 20% off at smokingpipes.com, coincidentally). The Virginia Slices are just pure Virginia, and they're fantastic.

Aromatics aren't a good place to start. Get some Latakia or burley blends to prime your flavor recognition. From there branch out to more subtle Virginias and Orientals then aromatics if you choose to. Thirty years in now myself and now tobacco smells exactly how it tastes, aros included.

I started with what was probably 1Q, and if I had started with an English blend I most certainly wouldn't have continued. I still smoke it from time to time but I am more into more flavorful blends. I don't think that it's wrong to suggest that some start with something that won't make them sick. Just maybe throw in a couple of samples of non aros.

As a percentage are former cigarette smokers, a burly based smoke seems logical.

I hated aros to begin with, not because of the flavor, but because I would smoke it too hot searching for flavor, and burn my tongue. My first love was heavy Latakia and then englishes. Now I've moved on and found that Virginia's are what do it for me, especially reds. Now I smoke mostly Virginia's and VaPers occasionally an aro, some burleys, very rarely an english and a lat bomb hardly ever.
A good "aro" with good flavor is Butternut Burley. Smells good, burns good, taste good.

And I guess I am going through some of this as it is a newly cleaned pipe, not broken in.

Also - i dont want to steer you away from the pipe by any means, but sheesha ( spelling ) from a hookah is also tobacco but much less tobacco taste and much much more fruity flavor or whatever the flavor is.
- and the only above mentioned blend ive tried is the SPC Plum Pudding and it is good stuff. But it doesnt taste like pudding. It does have a creamy characteristic to it. Definitly plummy / figgy / dark fruit to the tin note but over the latakia is hard to place in the room note.

Its like a moist goop of a tobacco that sits over a hot coal and very low temp smolders and creates a cool almost vapor like smoke.

The 2nd blend I ever tried was Pirate Kake. And not knowing what Latakia was it nearly turned me away from pipe smoking. Now I really enjoy pirate kake and am glad I stuck with it. Just wasnt what I was expecting. so branch out sir. Try a little bit of everything and perfect your method a bit.

Goop huh, it really is starting to sound like something stuck to ones boot, no thank you. I've chewed, dipped, smoked cigars, cigarettes, snuffed and rubbed it into my belly but, no goop sir.

It's also the one form of tobacco use that's more dangerous than cigarettes.

It's also the one form of tobacco use that's more dangerous than cigarettes. After tobacco is chemically liquified, turned into paper sheets, and packed into cigarette tubes, it's as far from being tobacco as it possibly could be.

Never said it was wrong, just not a good idea for most. Without good technique, an new smoker could end up with flavorless hot air and a scorched tongue from aros. I also mention burley too. Not quite as punch in the face as latakia.
