Never had a sour pipe but I clean up with a couple pipe cleaners and paper towel after each smoke. As far as resting a pipe to me it seems it could be a myth. I've always thought it to be a marketing gimmick. I used to think something similar. But then I did have a pipe "sour" on me a while back, and I mean all at once. Previous smoke was tasty, next one was foul and got dumped quickly. It was crazy. Cotton ball and alcohol treatment was easy and worked great: thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/5960/cotton-ball-alcohol-treatment

Over the past twenty years I've been cleaning up estates and definitely know about the cotton balls and alcohol, but prefer a retort.👍
