I smoke my pipes sometimes 2-3 times before I clean them. But none of my pipes ever got real bitter over it. Maybe just a slight bit, but I don’t let them go that far without cleaning them. I’ve had a little ghosting over it, but that too goes away after a few more smokes. So bitter will happen from not cleaning after a while, Smoking pure Latakia through a bitter pipe will sometimes chase the bitter away. Alcohol cleaning will also help. What do you guys do for a bitter pipe? 🧙🏼♂️

I run a cleaner through after every smoke. Havent had 1 problem yet.
Cobs dont get cleaned as often, but if they start tasting odd I just leave them out in the sun for a while.

In thirty years I've never had a bitter pipe. I will often smoke the same pipe twice per day for a week before changing pipes, sometimes longer. I just run a pipe cleaner through the stem after each smoke and wipe the chamber out with a paper towel.

I don't have bitter pipes, just bitter tobacco. The 965 started out good, but turned very bitter halfway through the bowl. I clean my pipes with 151 rum after every smoke.

Never had a sour pipe but I clean up with a couple pipe cleaners and paper towel after each smoke. As far as resting a pipe to me it seems it could be a myth.

I'm just going to say it right now, I am the worst when it comes to remembering to clean pipes. In fact...now that I think about it, I have been smoking the same Ashton bent bulldog since Monday morning, and not only have I not done anything other than tamp it against the heel of my boot to dump ash out (no pipe cleaners, no wiping, no nothing) I have smoked about 5 different blends in it. No funny after taste, no bitterness, no nothing. Just good clean tasting smoke. So, YMMV, but there it is.

It is a good practice to clean the pipes with Everclear periodically, with special attention to the shank, it cam be a reservoir of nasty gunk.
I clean after every smoke with a pipe cleaner, If I was a man of leisure sitting at home, it would be with an Everclear moistened pipe cleaner.

after a straight pass, I double the pipe cleaners over and scrub the shank thoroughly.

I run a pipe cleaner when it tells me it needs it, mostly every 3 - 4 smokes, everclear or 151 when I taste bitter, maybe 3 times a year. Smoke mostly the same 4 pipes daily. Others when I think of them.

I run a pipe cleaner through the whole thing after each smoke - even cobs. I've never had a sour pipe, expect for one exception...
The only bitter pipe I had was my falcon, which I wasn't able to clean because I couldn't get the bowl unscrewed. I then left it and forgot about it. The subsequent smoke was horrible. I couldn't work out why until I tried to unscrew the bowl to clean it out and I couldn't get it unscrewed. Then it hit me... I couldn't get the damn thing unscrewed last time.
I still can't get the freakin' thing off.

A cleaner dipped in alcohol will fix a sour pipe for me. Seems to be caused by liquid / tar build up in the stem or tenon. It's rarer these days since I started drying my tobacco much more. I also dry ream the bowl and stem with a paper towel at the end of the day.

Have been puting a cleaner in after smoking and letting it stay in the pipe for around 30 min. then take it out and put the pipe in the rack stem down till it's next smoke. Once a month I'll do a "clean" on my pipes I smoked that month using a shank brush and ream as required then put a cleaner thru the sahank soaked in Pipemaster's Clean & Cure thru the shank and wipe the bowl with it . Been doin' it this way for near on 50 years and have never had a pipe go "sour or bitter" on me.

My Legends take some serious abuse.

Also Everclear is available everywhere. If you live in one of the states where the government runs the liquor stores, it is probably a local nanny problem. 151 rum isn't good for you to have if you are stupid enough to drink it straight from the bottle, and politicians assume that we are all stupid.
