I play mandolin. I would love to see what instruments others may play and get some pictures of you indulging.
I saw a video which I can't find, of a guitar jam session at a pipe show. Was it the Chicago Pipe Show, maybe? Is this kind of thing really happening? Or have I died and gone to heaven?

Jeff I pump on the Cajun Acordion, but my old pictures of me pumping are gone. Haven't touched it in a while. Maybe I'll get it out.

customed designed 5-string violin/viola. Presently needs repair,no band or gigs anyhow. Good in a way as wifie needs so much home care from me. Only pic I can provide guess not, just circle rolling around www.facebook.com/checkpoint/block/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fed.duncan.52two pegs on high string side, 3 on lower. The 5th string a low "C", an octave below middle "C". Mr non-modern techie stuff here, no idea how to fix same. Still circling around where sez the above. Maybee eventually it'll fix itself..like the 3rd Thursday of next week! heh Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY

Over the years, I've played piano, guitar and percussion. Current passion is Afro-Cuban instruments with emphasis on Congas and Cajon.

$40 it cost me to get that *&^%* Facebook site fixed (hopefully forever) Again, only online picture. Taken by the maker of the "axe" back in around '01. Hope this goes thru as always an issue with FB allowing stuff to be forwarded without going thru lots of "hoops". He created some online kind of "album", stuck it in there. That album no longer exists. www.facebook.com/ed.duncan.52Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY

I play the Harmonica badly I have a Hohner Blues Harp G with a wood comb and a big 12 hole Hohner Marine Band in D. The MS line is very nice as you can take them apart to clean them properly but the newer ones all have the plastic comb.

Man I thought I had it bad when it came to collecting guitars lol
I play. Tave a Tallman and a class A tube amp right next to my desk. I tend to collect the 70''s and early Japanese Fugigen produced models. The market for 70-80's MIJ guitars is quite strong because of the quality.
Own various electrics: 60's Guild SD 60 78 Hamburgerler Jap Strat 79 Ibenez AR MIJ 82 Tallman '72 Tele
Various acoustics I got at auctions. Taylor maple body 0-18 size 1970 Guild M25 70's Simon and Patrick (old growth cherry back)
Bunch of others that I drag out not often enough.

I love it I love it. Who knew?
I play mandolin. Of the mandolins I own about nine or ten of them are in good working order and are payed and playable, for of them are played regularly. Of five others in need of a simple repair or set up.
I should make a list for y'all.

Most of the folks I play music with, at jam sessions, or little local folkie bands, are non-smokers, many are virulent anti-smokers. I never smoke in their presence, of course, but wow I get looks when they just know about my pipe obsession.
When practicing alone at home I sometimes have a pipe while I look over the music I am working on. And, something new, I occasionally have a pipe going while I practice.
I really do wish there were a way of combining the two obsessions.
Playing music and pipe smoking have a lot in common - they both involve interesting and artfully crafted objects, that also have great utility, and are a joy to own. - they both involve gobs of alone time and wonderful times sharing among sympatico obsessors. - they both can be enjoyed very quickly, and yet both have a learning curve, and learning gigantically enhances the experience of participating. - they both create joy, in ways that observers can recognize but not often understand. - they both have their detractors, those that would rather that you didn't. - they both have a great long tradition and history, as well as relevance in the present, and enjoyment in the present is enhanced by knowing the traditions. - they both can cause a rift with spouses, who would prefer to be your only obsession.
Playing music and pipe smoking are very different in that - pipe smoking rarely requires a focus on pipe smoking. It is usually done in the background of the mind, while reading, listening to music, watching a video, appreciating the world. - playing music is so totally immersive that there is very little brain space for focusing on anything else while playing. - while both playing music and pipe smoking can involve expensive paraphernalia, I think overall pipe smoking is a whole lot less expensive.
Please feel free to cogitate upon these things.

Would you be more likely to attend a pipe show, if a room were set aside to get together and pick a little?

Way back we used to meet at Mr Comeaux’s house and have a Tee Bol, little dance, his wife cooked a Guenia Gumbo and we passed a good time. One of my friends was divorced and brought his girlfriend, she didn’t know Mr Comeaux’s Wife was old school, girlfriend plopped her butt at the table and Mrs Comeaux said NoNo Men first. I had to hide my smile.we played and sang, they always wanted me to sing one of my X rated versions of an old favorite, with the women I had to clean it up a bit.!

As a kid I played pretty much every brass instrument in the band, trumpet, coronet, baritone, euphonium, valve trombone, slide trombone and tuba. (never could get the hang of french horn) along the way I picked up guitar and bass guitar, even a little stand up bass.
Nowadays it's mostly playing my Martin Acoustic, with an occasional hour here n there on the bass.

That is really great. Awesome. I play in a mandolin orchestra, no comparison of course, but at least a taste of a great ensemble playing world class beauty.

And thank you Walt, Instagram is a work in progress, not even sure what I'm doing but, I think it's coming along on the right path.

Hate to be "that" guy, but it would certainly be fun for me at event. There's only so many times you can compare who's got the biggest pipe. Besides. we'd be the cheapest entertainment the promoter could provide.

Well, I am a former drummer, guess I could borrow someone's Martin guitar and beat time with my sticks on its Rosewood back.

No, it would be a total distraction. There are countless opportunities to jam elsewhere . . not so many pipe shows. . While I agree, it is with sadness. It shows how much times have changed. Back in my father's day, well with my dad and his friends anyway, pipe smoking was never about pipe smoking. It was always something to do while participating in something else. Tuning the car, mowing lawn, soldering together a Heathkit television, whatever. It was never the subject. My Dad would never be comfortable sitting around with smokers to talk about smoking. It would have been like talking about what kind of belt he preferred to keep his pants up. But now there are so few of us, and so few opportunities to get together, that our "thing" has become a hobby. A go to activity. The subject of a moment in time. I am not complaining, just a little sad. I miss my father I guess. Or maybe I just get whip lashed between what I feel when I smoke, and the reality of today's pipe culture. But it is also a good thing. We live in a golden age of tobaccos and internet has made so many pipes available that the problem is choice. We have been critically paying attention to our hobby, and the result is glorious. Turning my little pity party off. Gonna play music later, in my own living room, smoking a pipe simultaneously, if not at the same time. Rimboche S.J. in a chimney. 1925 Lyon and Healy mandolin. Cheerwine to drink.
