While living in Ireland I acquired a taste for really good Irish and Scotch whiskey/whisky. Many marks, but my favorites are WRITER’S TEARS for Irish (uisce beatha— prononced ish-ka bah-ha— the water of life) and GLENMORANGIE for Scotch. But suddenly this summer I had “no interest.” Strange. It been almost four months now and not a drop. I feel like a traitor!

As mentioned in the "What are you eating" thread: A bottle of Luzon 2015, a nice dry red wine from Spain. A Shiraz/Syrah, Mourvedre blend. Back in 2005 this was a fantastic wine. The 2015 is pretty good but after 5 years I think it has peaked.

Opened a bottle of a good dry red wine this evening. A 2014 Montes Classic Series Cabernet Sauvignon from the Colchagua Valley in Chile. They are making some great wines in some South American countries these days - like Chile and Argentina. Thought this wine might have peaked, but it's still improving. Have to save the remaining bottles.

Production increased over the decades and more reaches the USA and the UK. I remember in 1980, one had to go to a restaurant run by those guys to find it.

Have you ever watched the movie "Bottle Shock"? It's all about wine and is a mostly true story. It's pretty good. An American in Paris has a wine shop and is trying to fit in with the French, but they snub him. He decides to hold a wine contest - California wines vs French wines - and he tells the French that of course the French will win, but the Americans will learn from their betters and improve their winemaking. He thinks this will help him gain acceptance. But the Americans win! And 10 years later he arranges a re-match - and the Americans win again! Anyway, at the end of the movie the American in Paris is contemplating the future of winemaking. He says that the next thing you know everyone will be producing great wine - even Africa. And it's true. Some of the best wines now come from Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, ..... Personally, I don't care for French wine. I prefer Italian, then wines from Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand .....

The only problem with a good dry red wine is that I'm the only one in my household who drinks it. So I get the whole bottle to myself over the course of an evening.
And the next morning, I have to go onto Facebook and delete all the political remarks I made the evening before.
Lately though, I've been typing in the remark on Facebook and then reading it back to my wife before posting it. She tells my if I should post it or not. Saves me from deleting them later.

I thought Facebook had an automated system for that. 😉 They probably do, but I live in the Nazi State of Illinois, where I have to have the states permission to own or be in possession of a firearm and/or ammunition. It's called an FOID card. It means Firearm Owners ID card. This may be the only state in the US that requires such a thing. You cannot purchase a firearm or ammunition without it. And you cannot own a firearm without it. For example, if I died and my wife became the owner of my firearms, she would be a felon if she didn't have an FOID card. If you let your card expire and own a firearm, you become a felon. Recently the Illinois legislature has been trying to pass a bill that would require me to give them all my social network logon ID's and passwords so they can review my posts to determine if they will let me own a firearm. It hasn't passed yet. So I watch what I post and I delete everything over 6 to 9 months old.

I wonder how the Illinois/Chicago succession is going. Probably the same as the Portland/Oregon and the Seattle/Washington successions. 👺 In Texas we want to keep Austin, but dispose of the residents.

I think that Arizona is probably destination #1 for a lot of people from Illinois. I know scores of people that moved here, and we have tons of snowbirds from Illinois in the winter.
I just hope that they realize their voting habits in the state of Lincoln, is what resulted in their own slavery.

But there are as many, or more people in the Chicago area than the rest of the state. I tried to move to Tennessee when I retired, but the wife decided she couldn't be away from our children. Almost bought a house in Cleveland TN. Population ~41,000. Mostly mild winters compared to Illinois.
