I play regularly on gameknot.com.
I enjoy the game but I can't say I'm anything more than an amateur.

Lately I've been playing some chess on Chess24.com (I'm not very good). How do you fake a sneeze and knock over the board when you are losing?

I just flipped the board and stormed off. The last 200 times I just lost gracefully and got drunk. Edit : When playing the computer, just use Ctl-Alt-Del.

I love the game! I'm not very good, but I enjoy it. When I was young, me and my grandfather played a game or 2 every night before he went to bed. Now, me and my 10 year old once in a while. He has beat me a few times.

He has beat me a few times. Go to Gameknot.com and sign up, then let me know your username and Ill play a round or two with you. It can be done real time or correspondence style, the latter being my preference due to time constraints. (Mods: This isn't a forum so I figured it OK, if its not please edit my post and Ill send a PM with the details to Josh) P.S. That goes for anyone with a wish to play a friendly game.

bonanza wins with the cool Staunton chess set, the Pelican and the whiskey, but please, for the love of the game, turn those knights sideways!

bonanzadriver you have a couple of good looking boys there. Though I suspect young men is a more appropriate term for them.

I taught my granddaughter to play chess. At 8 she is becoming competent. I can't imagine how well she'll play at 10 or 12.

Call it vain but one of my proudest moments was when I finally was able to beat him consistently. In fairness, that session was when he hadn't played the game in a couple of years so it really wasn't a victory. If he was practiced he would have given me a run and probably won as many as lost. Still felt good enough to make me feel guilty I love my dad, he is far from perfect but he's my dad!

I like chess, but I'm awful at it. My mind doesn't work tactically like that. I can't be thinking 2-3 moves ahead... I'm just about thinking one move behind (i.e. regretting the last move I made).

Folks think the top chess players are good because they can see much further ahead than you can. They actually can't. What they are good at is noticing patterns. If I can get this pattern, I've got him. Hmm, let's see, a bishop guarding those two important flight squares of the king, so all I need to do is move that stinking B7 pawn and my second bishop will swoop in for the two-bishop mate. They see patterns, not further ahead

I taught my older boy to play chess when he was around 10. Third game, the little bastard beat me. He was convinced I let him win. Uh, yeah... we'll go with that. π

"Third game, the little bastard beat me."
This is why trying to improve by playing a computer is no fun - the pc feels no pain.

Uh, yeah... we'll go with that. π For me, I used to pin my son down in nothing flat, even though he put up a good fight when we wrestled. Then he came back from the Marine corps with a neck four times the size I had seen it before. He had advanced physical training and excelled among his peers. βHey dad, meet me out back, letβs get to it!β I advised him that it was high time we put away such foolishness, and move on.

I used to play against the computer.
I had to take back moves because of my blundering. Even then it was 50/50. I had no classical strategy the computer could identify. I just hunted down my opponent's pieces one by one and drove the remaining King into a corner for checkmate. Usually, I would re=crown my Queen.

Been a great weekend so far. The boys made it down and we've been enjoyin some pretty nice weather and of course their company. This afternoon they joined me up in the mancave for a couple of cigars, scotch and of course a couple of games... They both took it easy on the ol man and let him win. ;-)

Back around 1983, I had a girlfriend who knew how to play chess. So I got her to play me. I had been reading books on chess, trying to really learn how to play. The third or fourth game her opening was to move the pawn out that set her up for a "fools mate". After I beat her in the 3 or 4 moves in a fools mate, she would never play again.
