The Scouts here used to have the Air Explorers. Don't know if they still do that or if they have it in your area. Watching the TV these days you'd think all they did was molest little boys, but they saved my life and really helped a lot of other guys I know.

A Cessna flew over the house in Humble last night. Being 2 miles north of a major international airport the space over our house is usually restricted. Most Cessnas don't want to mix with 787s.

Unfortunately dedicated forums are being eaten up by social media giants like the book of faces, red it, etc. March of progress... ETA: There is hope, though, because those platforms are increasingly persecuting anything that doesn't jive with their political correctness. Since tobacco gets a bad rap, they might start forcing those groups and subs out of existence, which will push people back to the mom and pop message boards. Just today, I received an offer from FB for a $10 credit to boost our event invitation... for the umpteenth time. I chipped in $10 and told them to go ahead and boost and was told that what we stand for does not meet their “community standards”. Never mind they willingly host and boost sites that are morally bankrupt by comparison. Fortunately, we have a website, so when they decide that we are the moral reprobates, a quick search will find us. Did you get your $10 back?

Here is a thought.
A Briar Patch Forum App. Something on our cell phones where we could participate, or catch up on reading the WAYS thread, when not at a computer. That might really bring youngins into the clubhouse.
OTOH, I kind of like how quiet it is around here. Feels like not so many that I can't get to know some of you, as we bump into each other a lot on here.

If we start getting a bunch of young people posting pics of their french fries with the caption 'u like lol', I hope sparks burns this place to the ground.

Dammit Duane. I know that's not real though, because you used punctuation and those aren't McDonalds' fries.

Fellas being a newbie to this site and the pipe world I like it as is. I use to belong to a big cigar site but found over time the aficionado side of the house was quickly being replaced by crackpots and trailer trash. Before you could talk about tobacco tasting notes, new hot brands coming out etc. Now it s just photos of people showing off what they’re smoking. Sadly you’ll get the Isla de Sols, Tampa Trolleys and other gas station cigars being posted almost too frequently. I may be a traditionalist but don’t change a thing. From what I’ve seen so far we have new members, myself included, joining the patch. Don’t worry, you’ve built it and they will come.

Would that many more members actually be a good thing? More people means more egos and opinions, which means more conflict and drama, which means guys like me go away.
I prefer a few good friends...

Sometimes, I do envy those pipe smokers that own one pipe and smoke only one blend. Not me....I love the various blends and different pipes that I enjoy...I would find pipe smoking boring otherwise...and the friendships that you can develop over such a small thing such as pipe smoking...truly priceless. Here, here!!!

I frequent five different pipe smoking forums and a sixth occasionally. Each has its own vibe and culture, if you will. One is neither better or worse than the others, just some different in the tone of the conversations. There is a fair amount of cross pollination of members with familiar “faces” across the forums. The Patch seems a pretty tight group but I do miss some of the member’s who’ve chosen to leave. It is a good place to learn the art of pipe smoking.

Son in law flys for FEDX, teaching my Grandson to fly. He asked me PawPaw you never wanted to fly an airplane, Reply No Son I jumped out of them. Yeah, oldcajun...you got the rapid training at the U. of S. Vietnam. Probably was enough for you to last a lifetime.

OTOH, I kind of like how quiet it is around here. Feels like not so many that I can't get to know some of you, as we bump into each other a lot on here. There's something in this... We are a tight group of people, which I like. We are more like a family. That said, new members are always welcome and hopefully are made to feel part of the family from day 1. I think an onslaught of new members might disturb the family vibe. I'm not saying I don't want new members, but I think the drip-feed of new members works well, in that each new member will hopefully feel a little more special when they arrive.

Totally agree with Paddy. Being a newbie on this site for less then a month, I love the feeling of a close family connection. Everyone is respectful of each other, extremely supportive of one an another and very helpful. At least this is the case with me. My two cents worth: don’t change a thing. Trust me, when “true” pipers (btw, what does a pipe smoker call himself: piper? Sounds a little too fairytalish to me) get tired of the bulls$€£¥, and want something refreshing and authentic, they’ll find us. Having said that, THANKS for welcoming me with open arms. Gentlemen... you may smoke!

Do we want to be measured or weighed. The number of members, or the quality of the members.

I'm on another forum, where I've been a key contributor for nearly 10 years. I've watched as the core group has morphed over time. Some give up the pipe for various reasons...some get busy in life...a few die...and some disappear and you never know just why. With a decent membership here, there's usually something interesting to read or respond to. As to the other forum where I'm a moderator, I can tell you that a lot of guys log in, they read, but rarely contribute...with the exception of posting a quick thought here or there on an existing post of interest. Not criticizing those guys, heck, I've been one of them...but many don't think they have something interesting enough to create a new thread about. So while we don't have the membership of a flight site, we have plenty of guys to contribute content...which could then create more interest.
Might I suggest that since we all like pipes (right?)...that we share more about our own pipes? Lots of guys here restore old pipes for their own collection, or for someone else; but we don't see a lot of those "before & after" images shared. Or, how about more threads such as...Let's see your Stanwells...Let's see your freehands...etc? Guys love that stuff...I know I do. More interesting content can also draw more people here.
Regarding quality members vs. quantity...even the very best Patch members visited and stayed for one reason or another...so getting them here is good!

There are all kinds of snarky comments and careless offense that just doesn't occur here. It is difficult day to day to appreciate what isn't here, like noticing that your back doesn't hurt this morning, but those of us who unfortunately have experience in overcrowded poorly moderated forums know well how bad it can get.
Came for the pipe talk. Staying for the comradery.

Really like all the comments here.
One point of clarification though....
It was not my intent to infer that our sight was woefully underpopulated or somehow a "lesser than" sight compared to other pipe sites.
I was just making an observation based off of the number of pipe smokers in the world / U.S. and how few of them either cared about or knew about our little slice of heaven here.
As others have voiced here, I do not want this to become some "gamer" site or something akin to redit.
I too miss some of our previous contributors here, but that being said, I do not miss those that were prone to "stirring the pot" with their baiting posts, claiming to be the victim when in fact they were seeking an opportunity to feign injury or slight.
cheers
