Guns, knives, cameras— I have to put my “mark” on them, change them in some way. And now, tobacco. My go-to is still Sutliff’s Z92. But when moist it doesn’t light well and there are many, many re-lights. So I started drying it a bit by leaving it open on a sheet of paper or pre-loading a few pipes and letting them sit for a day. Much better. Then this morning I spread a thin layer on the pan that came with the toaster oven and “toasted” a very small batch. Not long, just enough to get it really warm and then let it sit a while. Worked pretty well: easy light, very few re-lights. Still smokes great.
Lastly, I put a couple of bowls-full into a ziplock and added about five drops of Glenmorangie single-malt Scotch. Sealed ‘er up and will let ‘er sit for a day or so.
Inquiring minds wanna know...

Inquiring minds wanna know... That ought to work out good...please post your results for the rest of us hooligans. I tried a bit of Grand Marnier Jaune ((not an export item) in some black cavendish and 5100 red cake...turned out pretty good, and I might do it again.

I here you can dry tobacco in a paper plate sitting atop the shade of a lit lamp...I've not tried it, so you'll need to time it out for yourself...keep an eye on it, and let us know.

I believe that’s half the fun of pipe smoking, figuring out the nuances that work for you.

Sometimes I would use about 15 seconds in the microwave. That tends to work for me.

I put my tobacco on a cookie sheet overnight, then jar it away.

mrlunting mentioned something in another thread about rehydration, where tobacco is on one side of a Tupperware box and the distilled water is on the other side. Has anyone tried the same thing but with whiskey? So, instead of adding a few drops like above, the tobacco is kinda rehydrated with the water present in the whiskey, but also potentially lightly flavoured? Or would the effect be too subtle?

I have used whiskey and whisky. 😁 I use the little moisture pouches for distilled water, but I use the staves from FMC soaked in the liquor of my choice to add flavor. I tend to prefer rum, but I have used bourbon and cheap, off-brand single malt scotch.

I rushed my experiment this morning by trying a bit of my concoction in a Roma churchwarden (egg). The tobacco was barely moist and it was a mild, sweet smoke. I am very far from a connoisseur flavor discerner but I detected a slight whisky note and the bowl was definitely sweeter than the Z92 alone. I consider the experiment a success and will continue to modify, maybe with a bit more whisky next time. Next up: some Gentleman Jack bourbon and some Courvoisier cognac.

Just be careful about what sort of alcohol you use. The wrong sort of thing could cause a mold. Less sugar, more proof.

I'll be posting about it in my next post. Smoking it in my old Yello-bole Canadian.

Welp...just tried the mix that has been aging since 6/18...turned out to be not bad, but can't really taste the Grand Marnier...but the flavor is there...just a little muted. Still worth trying again, but with a stronger flavor.

Been wondering about soaking one in Rum instead of distilled water - or Fireball Whisky

Only gives it a bare hint, but that's just enough.

I’m right now, after supper, smoking the second bowl of my Glenmorangie experiment. This bowl is better than the first. I would add ‘robust’ to my earlier comments. But it is still a mild, sweet smoke. So far I think it is an improvement over Z92, which is its base. ‘Substantial’ it is, but still gentlemanly. I will make more of this stuff, perhaps up the drop-count to 7 from 5. That 2# of Z92 can’t arrive fast enough!

The tobacco will be smokable eventually and the cost of the booze is negligible. (unless you use Johnnie Walker Blue or something). I use the cheapest booze I can find.

I am not a fan of bourbon-sytle whiskeys. Not by a long shot. But a friend gave me a bottle of Gentleman Jack (erroneously called Gentleman Jim in an earlier post) and I had to admit it was fine whiskey. Had only the tiniest bit left, maybe 1/16 ounce, so I put it in a ziplock with about 5-bowls of Z92 last night. This morning I let it air-dry for a couple of hours and then gave it 10-seconds in the microwave. Tried a bowl in the churchwarden (which is becoming my “test pipe).
“Robust and substantial” again come to mind. Can’t say I am picking up whiskey-ness from these experiments but the Z92 is definitely transformed. A sweeter, more full-bodied smoke without harshness or bite.
Next up will be the Courvoisier.
