Made it to the ranch yesterday. Doing day work for the next couple of days to see if we’re a fit and so the boss can tell if I actually know what I’m doing. Feeding several hundred first calf heifers and their babies, then doing a pelvic check of about 300 more replacement heifers. A full day right off. Sounds as though you arrived just in time! Clearly, they need you.

"You play the cards you are dealt." Marcus Aurelius would have agreed, he lived his life by that sentiment. Today started at 37°, our highest overnight temp so far, and ended up at 84°. Did some mowing, spraying, and puttering in the shop, then took the pups for a nice long ramble on the creek, the longest yet. They spent most of the time IN the water today. Eli is becoming a real water-baby. Later this afternoon he and I hung out on the deck watching the squirrels eat buds off the black cherry tree out front. Our trees have no leaves yet, so we get a good view of them at work. Eli can't take his eyes off them. Jack stayed inside, on the couch which is softer than the deck. He ain't no fool that ol' boy. Discovered that somehow I managed to lose the gas cap off the Rhino. Dang. Created a make-shift that kinda fits and will hold until the replacement arrives. $40 for a gas cap. Ouch! "twas ever thus. I lost the cap off my Polaris years ago or someone took it. Why they are not hinged and attached to the tank I know not.

Dewayne, you may have dodged the bullet with the jerk who offered a job but then filled it with someone else...sounds like someone who is strictly out for themselves...someone you don't need in your life. This new ranch will see that you are the man they need working for them...someone who knows the ropes and can get the job done...can't be a screwup on a working ranch.

Glad you made it to the ranch hope it is a good fit for you all.

Active day dealing with issues in the community.
One of the problems, a woman locked herself out of her truck. I went around the village to all of the car thieves seeking help. No joy. None home. Either on the lam or incarcerated? Ended up with the Deputy Fire Chief getting the door unlocked.

I was very happy to get my 2nd vaccination shot over with today. Had to drive 45 minutes to do so, so loaded up the pipe with good tobacco and it lasted me the entire drive. Parking in downtown Seattle was easy, the walk pleasant, the shot quick, and I had some pleasant interactions. I saw a homeless friend of mine outside the coffee shop selling 'Real Change' - I've known Dave for 15 years and he's got as good an attitude as any of my friends. All the vaccination team were great and I had a good conversation with the guy who gave me the shot. Only bad part was I left my glasses at the pharmacy!

When my girlfriend got her second she got up to 103 temp for two days, but didn't feel all that terrible. The Iris weather-tight tubs arrived, and today I'll be moving all of my tobacco from the boxes. This is probably over-kill, but we live in a humid part of the world and I look at it as a $60 insurance policy paid in full.

For those interested and keeping up, the boss offered me a permanent job as a cowboy on the ranch this morning. We’re moving in to the house now.

But then again, it isn’t like that must have been a hard decision for the boss Dewayne. Any man worth his salt can size up a hand in short order. I hope this turns out to be a great long term situation for you and your beautiful bride.

Anyone know where Ron is? Ron is at home in East Texas. He says he shall return one day but is not ready now. He commented on his number of posts and thought someone else ought to have a chance,,,,

Rain here today. We really needed it, having had day after day of red flag warnings. The pups will probably have to go without their run today, but we have warm and sunny days coming up, starting tomorrow and with the rain the creek will be up. 90° forecast for Friday, which means it will get to 95 or higher right here. Summer is warming up in the bull-pen.

For those interested and keeping up, the boss offered me a permanent job as a cowboy on the ranch this morning. We’re moving in to the house now. Sounds like a dream job. Back in the 1980's I met a young guy from Brazil who loved U.S. western films, and moved here to become a cowboy. We lived in Ft. Worth Texas. He used to go to a nightclub and practice riding their bull. After he felt confident in his abilities, he started riding real bulls at events. He got away with it for several events, then they found out he wasn't accredited (whatever that means), and kicked him out. He kept sneaking into other rodeos and riding bulls - quite a silver-tongued devil. He eventually bought my Nissan pick-up and got a job as a cowboy on a ranch, and was in heaven. Made me want to do the same thing, actually.

Sunny and warm, and a bit breezy. Went through the herd this morning and checked the calves, checking and tagging all of the new ones born since yesterday. There’s about 800 momma cows, I think he said, and we’re about 80% through with the calving.

$15 per hour, all cash, and I still cannot find anyone to help clean irrigation ditches.
This is not heavy labor. This is picking up debris and trash which has blown in with the wind.
Sad what we have become.

Sad what we have become. Normally I'm in SW Colorado this time of the year. I would love to get paid $15 to get exercise and avoid watching television all day with my parents.
