It's hard to believe that the railroads are that hard up for cash to run a 200 car train shorthanded. But I do believe it. Skeleton Crews!!!! Ha I am one of the two Skeletons!

Strange day. All was well until 5:00 PM when I received a call from the care home where my 91 y/o mother lives. She has dementia that is worsening rapidly. She took a fall and was at the ER. Long story short, she has a fracture in her C5 vertebrae. Fortunately, it is not displaced and stable. She is looking at 6 weeks minimum in a neck collar. The tough part is her short term memory loss doesn’t allow her to remember why she has the uncomfortable collar on and she pulls on it nearly constantly. It will be an interesting 6 weeks. I am grateful, it could have been so much worse.

Bad news: finished the last episode of season 6 of Bosch. Good news: apparently there will be a season 7.

Ha I am one of the two Skeletons! I am recalling a big labor dispute with Southern Pacific back around 1960. SP was trying eliminate the last Firemen from their diesel-electric locomotives. The company called their inclusion "Featherbedding". The union called their elimination "Skeleton Crews". The settlement was for the remaining unretired Firemen to start up the engines in the morning and switch them off when not needed. Rest of the time, those engines sat idling.

200 cars = almost 3 miles long? I remember when I was a little kid we were going to watch a trail ride coming into Houston for the Rodeo. We were stopped by a train and I counted over 270 cars. Of course, that's on very flat land. Talking about 1957 or so.

adding good thoughts for Kelly's Mom. Back in'12, my 94yr old MIL in similar care housing did a face plant over her walker. Dementia, didn't recall why had just a quite bloody nose, good news, no spinal. She made it to 98. Gotta be tough if you're in 60s with 90+ parent(s)

Well, got my wish for cooler weather so I could cycle, but along with it came rain and thunderstorms - so no ride today. Down to 71⁰F and holding there this morning. The rain is just in time to save the lawn. It was starting to "brown out".

Interesting story here in my hometown. A judge here just ruled that a man named Jim Root actually won the sheriff's election back in 2018! He's is being sworn in today. There's not much of his term left to serve now.

What were the root causes for this misunderstanding?
Are other county residents rooting for Root and hoping he can root out the evil affecting the county?

Worked on 2 batches of wine today. While I was filtering one of them, I looked down and happened to see that the glass carboy I was sending the filtered wine to was cracked! It was a little over 1/2 filled when I noticed. Had to transfer it to another carboy, then finish filtering. First one I've found cracked like that. I probably bumped it sometime. Camera wouldn't focus on the glass very well, but you can see the star shaped crack and a long crack going down from the "star". Glad I didn't lose 6 gallons of wine because of it.

Been taking it pretty easy due to the combination of extreme heat and the surgical recovery. The 40Y down to the mailbox is about the only exercise I've been getting. A good day today though. I got a nice 'confirmation of training.' Eli goes with me down to the box. I open the gate and he stands waiting permission to go through. Today he got his 'OK!' and dashed out to check the front area. Unknown to me a flock of turkeys was loafing under one of the big cedars. He dashed in and they went everywhere! Running and flying. He chased and I gave him a sharp 'No!' To which he responded by putting on the brakes and coming right back to me. I am pleased.

Ha I am one of the two Skeletons! Funny thing you say that. One of my students last year told me that since there is always at least one pregnant woman in the world, the average number of skeletons per person is greater than 1.

Picked up my Dad and went to sister's house for a family Father's Day celebration a day early. I'll be grilling sausages tomorrow at a little festival that our social club does every summer. It's good to be getting back to normal around here. Looking forward to seeing folks that I haven't seen in a year +.

Happy first day of summer, all. Almost an anti-climax what with the beastly weather we've been having. But any excuse for a celebration, of sorts. May we all enjoy it to the max...

Spent the morning grading papers.
My younger daughter is at camp for a bit, but my older daughter is coming by for lunch.
My wife is catching a flight to AZ tomorrow to go see her dad, so I'll have the house to myself for a few days.
