I needed new tires. I had wanted to get some anyway before winter, and I was going to put it off for another year until I had to get another patch last week. Actually, it was near the edge of the tread so I just got a plug to get me through the week. I ordered some Cooper LT265/70/17s from Walmart. They are the Discovery ATs and they were about a hundred dollars cheaper each than comparable tires from other makers. It seems that Wal-Mart persuaded Cooper to continue making their very popular previous generation of the Discovery AT that has since been slightly upgraded to the AT3. Can't wait to get them installed. 16.5/32 tread depth and 10 ply.

Go with the 10ply I hear good things about Cooper tires. I need new tires on my 02 Tacoma. 109k! miles on Toyo MT 10ply and we put Toyo CT 10ply on wife's Tundra. I do not believe in cheap tires.

Walmart has a pretty good process in place, type in what you want and they show you which stores in your area have them in stock, real time. (And we have a lot of Walmart’s near us.) They immediately reserve them and their mounting prices are very fair.
Discount tires on the other hand, adds all kinds of up charges.
The last time I got BF Goodrich ( my go to tires), my son bought them on Amazon and they shipped them to Pep Boys, and they mounted them pretty inexpensively.
My last pair of BFG’s had 90,000 miles on them, still a lot of tread, but the Arizona climate had degraded the sidewalls.
Cooper makes a fine tire though.

The Coopers I currently have on my 2500HD are American-made. Not all are, in case you want to check for that.

Not all are, in case you want to check for that. “ The best way to know if your Cooper Tires are made in America is to check the DOT alphanumeric stamp on the sidewall of the tire. This provides all the info you need. One of the first sequences of numbers and letters will indicate the plant the tire is manufactured in. The DOT codes for Cooper’s American plants are as follows: 3D – Albany, Georgia U9 – Tupelo, Mississippi UP – Findlay, Ohio UT – Texarkana, Arkansas” Sadly, BFG has made a huge investment in Chinese manufacturing of their tires, so who knows what the future holds. But then again in the 90’s the Michelin’s on a church van with tires made in Greenville SC had 3 different tire failures at highway speeds, pretty dangerous in a top heavy van filled with humans.

Good point, Charlie. Made in America no longer guarantees quality. Sad, but true. Still— I buy American whenever I can.

I ran those tires on my Land Cruiser for years. Great tire. Sadly, they became too pricey around here.

Same here, to their credit, Kirkland tires (Costco) made by Michelin made it right. They emailed prepaid labels and I dropped the tires off at a UPS store so they could investigate the failure. They paid for new tires and the body and mechanical repairs on the van, broken fuel lines and brake lines. But they got off cheap since I avoided a catastrophic wreck in a church van.

... son and wife went out to Tombstone. Hey Charlie ... we're heading down that way soon. Did they report any closures or drastic changes to the place?

... son and wife went out to Tombstone. Hey Charlie ... we're heading down that way soon. Did they report any closures or drastic changes to the place? No all is open. Depending on what you are looking for as far as accommodations, I like staying in Sierra Vista. Tombstone has pretty much all older hotels. Bisbee has a few $$$$ places of historic nature, a lot of the older places have shared bathrooms. www.sierrasuitesaz.com/An older southwestern themed hotel that has decent breakfasts, great Mexican restaurant next door, and a smoker friendly open courtyard. Older, but well maintained. If you are thinking about visiting Kartchner Caverns, buy tickets ahead of time. The roads between towns are nice for the scooter, and everything is relatively close. Helldorado is coming up, is that where you are going for? Take your roscoe with you, the Clanton family still lives there and they are holding a grudge.

Thanks, Charlie! We will be staying in Bisbee at the historic Jonquil Motel (circa 1936) which has been recently renovated. It's away from the main area just enough to be more quiet and it's pet friendly to boot. Buying the Kartchner tickets ahead is definitely a good idea ... thanks!

Sounds like you have the plan, man!
If you have time, the drive from Sierra Vista through Patagonia is nice, going home you end up going through Nogales. Patagonia is a nice town, walk across the border to Nogales has some great Mexican food.
Whatever you do take the slow pace, much better.

Well, everyone loves the look of the BFG AR, but BFG knows it! They would have been 140 more bucks per tire and the Cooper's are higher rated. I wanted them shipped to the store and then they would install them, but the app would only ship them to my house. If they ordered them through Walmart they would have been $40 more per tire. Go figure. I'm having them installed at the tire shop next door.

Maybe so, but 90k is nothing to sneeze at, still grabbed the road like no tomorrow, and I bet I could have squeezed 100k from that set of tires...not into looks, just performance. Mine are the Rugged Terrain T/A's, both on the truck and Dodge Nitro.

However you dice it, if it is a well rated tire at $136.00 per tire, you are are ahead of the game. You could be a Vulcan with raw materials and your own tire manufacturing tools, and not be able to beat that.

You could be a Vulcan with raw materials and your own tire manufacturing tools, and not be able to beat that. That's the truth. On my last truck I put on BFG Radial AT KO2s and I loved them, but I gave up about 20% in gas mileage. So, I bought the Michelin Defender ATs because they had low rolling resistance. It didn't improve the mileage any but I loved the way they drove, stopped and the traction on dirt and mud was better than the KO2s. They did not look aggressive at all. Both the BFG and the Michelins are out of my price range now that I'm retired.

Give us a heads up if you roll this way, my ability to take time off is limited at my new job, but I am not rowing on a slave ship either...my work weeks are typically 35-40 hours. But...I have been told that we are entering our busy season in the winter withy the snowbirds flocking in. Calm before the storm? I just don't know.
