Some have it; some don’t. My father did not have it, at all. Somehow I got it. I’ve collected (some might say “accumulated”) all manners of things in my life. Some collect matchbooks, stamps, old toys, audio gear, cameras— and the list goes on. What are some of the collectibles that those us so afflicted have gathered unto us? Pipes count, of course!

I have a bit of it.
I also have a new-to-the-hobby-obsessive gene.

I have it. My passion for books has significantly cooled off but I still am activity adding to my tobacciana library. I just upgraded my Dunhill Anniversary book that I've had for years had with a signed copy and I got signed edition of Franco Coppo's Castello book for the holidays. My love of pipes is well known and I'm always adding to those collections. I consider the Castello le Dune to be a continuation of the Epoca line and I just added a 2020 Castello le Dune shape 215 pipe in honor of my Granddaughter who was born in September and is a "73" in Castello years.

Pipes for sure. Also went a bit crazy with musical instruments. 30 guitars, so far, plus 12 amps and a couple of keyboards. As I get older the issue becomes what do I do with all of this stuff. A project for another day.

I collected about 80 cameras, mostly 35mm from the 40's 50's, 60's. Have several interesting ones. One says it was made in "US Occupied Japan" and another that says it was made in "USSR Occupied Germany" - or words to that effect. Been meaning to sell some of them on Ebay.
I had almost every issue of Playboy magazine, but I pitched every issue after September 1985 when they switched to the modern binding. Another Ebay project I may never get to.
Maybe 30 or 40 pocket knives. Nothing expensive - just ones I liked. Starting on pipes, of course. Nothing "collectable". Just for my smoking pleasure. Many guns, but wouldn't call myself a collector.

I forgot about cameras. But they really shouldn't count since they were occupational equipment. Still, vintage Nikons, Leicas, 4x5s, 8x10s are certainly collectable.

I collected cameras in my 20s, I had about 2 dozen early Kodaks, a couple of Speed Graphics, another view camera and old enlargers, timers, etc. I gave it all away when I moved out in the divorce 46 years ago.

I did "accumulate" a lot of aquariums at one time. Not what I'd refer to as a "collection". Had about 24 tanks ranging from 10 gallons to 150 gallons. Had 20 of them in use when I retired 6 years ago.
I specialized in African Cichlids. Bred thousands of them They loved the hard, mineral rich water from my well.
Sold the fish. Tore down and sold the tanks. Downsized and moved to a smaller home.

Oh, dear lord. My dad is a bit of a pack rat, and I definitely caught the gene.
My sort of overarching collection: I collect hobbies.
pipes and tobaccos, again watches outerwear boots knives (just a little, and I think I'm about done with that one) audio gear
I don't collect cameras, per se, but I have several. Only one some of you guys might be interested in is a Leica IIIf that started life as a IIIc, then got factory-upgraded to an f shortly after the war. I have a couple of old lenses for it.
I don't collect books, per se, but I read, so I have a lot of them. My pace has slowed the last few years, and I've gone to Kindle and audiobooks, mostly, because I just don't have space for any more physical books. I've already been through one large round of library donations, and I'm about to have to do another.
I don't collect records, but I have a turntable so I've got some. Again, I've gone to electronic media because I just don't have space for any more records. I still buy a record every once in a while, but that's it.

We had cichlids too. Beautiful colors. Didn't breed them. (on purpose) I had to put 2 layers of egg crate ceiling fluorescent light grills under the gravel to keep them from digging. Had it for 10 years and gave it away when we moved.

I sometimes tell myself I'd like to live that way, but obviously I wouldn't or that's what I'd be doing. The fact is, I find craftsmanship and good design fascinating. Doesn't matter if I find it in a pipe, a coat, a pair of speakers, or whatever. I think another part of it is we just didn't have money for anything when I was growing up. I wouldn't say we were poor, but we certainly had no money for any more than was strictly necessary. Also, I'm a lifelong bachelor with no kids. Stuff is what I have in lieu of family.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
Unfortunately the gubmint saw fit to create a regulatory agency to hinder me.
In spite of that, I have prospered.
I have some pretty cool 10 meter and CB radios, and theology books.

$40K for a speaker. ONE speaker. I’ve always been fascinated by audio, audio gear, editing, etc. But I am so near deaf that it’s like a legless man wanting to be a highwire artist. Still, $40K for a single speaker seems... well, excessive. Perhaps Zuckerberg would like a few, if he doesn’t already have them. Maybe that’s why they have only two available.

It only seems high because you can get 6 pairs of Klipschorns for the price one pair of the Tannoy Kingdoms. Of course then you have to build a room with 6 corners.

I’ve got a pipe buddy who sells high end audio systems to the 1%. He has clients who spend millions (couch change) a year on their handmade systems.
