Watched "Hang Em High" tonight. Good entertainment.
Didn't know, or remember, some of the notable actors, or actors that went on to play notable parts. Alan Hale - the "Captain" from Gilligan's Island. James MacArthur - was later "Dano" on the original Hawaii 5O. Jonathan Goldsmith - the "Most Interesting Man in the World" from the commercials for Dos Equis beer. Dennis Hopper - Easy Rider. Mark Lenard - played the prosecutor - was Spock's father, Sarek in all the Start Trek movies. And many more.....

Watched ARKANSAS tonight. These guys thought they were making a significant piece of filmic art. They were wrong. I'm from there, and I've never heard of the movie. It reminds me, though, of the excellent documentary "Command and Control," about an accident in a nuclear missile silo in AR.

In the “interviews” following the film there was great emphasis on how much they revealed about the people and ways of the state. That was nonsense. They revealed nothing and the film could have been about anywhere.

Can Can, 1960. The young Shirley MacLaine always amazed me with her dancing. Exhausting and thrilling to watch. 9/10

Watching Kong:Skull Island. Lots of fun explosions and stuff. 3/10 as a movie, but 8/10 as mindless entertainment.

Tonight I watched MARY SHELLEY. I was ready for a stinker, cynic that I am. Instead I was very impressed, even delighted. They nailed the period, the dress, the language, the angst of a time when “things” are changing very dramatically. The script was excellent and very intelligent. Acting was also very good. I have to give this one a 9/10. Well worth a watch.
BTW, it was so good that there is no way it could ever make it at the box office.

They revealed nothing and the film could have been about anywhere. I'm not sure much of Arkansas has ways. Not of its own, anyway. It can be divided into 4 corners and a center. The corners are all largely extensions of the states next door. If there's a distinct Arkansas, it would have to be in the center.

"Command and COntrol" was fascinating. Things I never knew about those old missiles. In routine maintenance when things go wrong..... I need to re-watch it. I remember getting a perverse kick out of the part near the end, when everybody thinks it's all over, and somebody says, "Ummm, where's the nuclear warhead?"

I think Bentonville and Harrison are very Arkansas and some of the towns along Highway 7.

“State cultures” are getting harder and harder to find as our mobile population scatters all over the country. The distinctiveness of places gets mighty diluted. Kinda sad really.

I said I would watch THE HUNT (2020) tonight. And I did. This is one weird film. It has a completely bonkers plot, is intensely, grotesquely violent with blood and guts (literally!) everywhere. People get shot with arrows. Blown up by grenades and land mines (body parts flying thru the air), shot with shotguns, rifles, pistols of every description, fall onto punji stakes, get stabbed with Cuisinart blades, and the list goes on. I liked it.
One of the best things about it is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. It is a romp. Distasteful, but a romp nevertheless. Pure entertainment, IF you are entertained by stuff like this. It’s fun, in a macabre vein. (Vein, blood, gore... see what I did?)
The acting was good, even very good. (Hillary Swank is in it.) Lots of foul language, but it all fits. Treat it as a bizarre, off-beat horror tale and you might get a kick out of it. I’m not a shill for blood-soaked horror flicks. Had I known more about it I probably would have taken a pass. Kinda glad I didn’t. It could be “triggering” (ugh!) for some folks, so tread cautiously.

Watched GUNPOWDER last night, a 3-part mini-series about the attempt to blow up James I and his parliament in 1605. Pretty grim but very well done. The cast was excellent and the production values were both sumptuous and accurate. Very good script, too. Dumb title. But they couldn’t call it GUY FAWKES because the film makes clear he was a minor character. FIFTH OF NOVEMBER, or CATESBY would have been better. Even THE GUNPOWDER PLOT would have been an improvement. Oh, well. 8.5/10.
Warning: The scenes of the execution of the Catholic “traitors” are extremely accurate and unpleasantly graphic.

What "channel" has that program? I would love to watch it. Drawing and Quartering was the traditional remedy for treason. An excellent reason to remain loyal to one's King,eh?

Been watching Heartland a series filmed in Canada...cattle/ horse ranch and the "miracle girl" horse trainer...an outstanding series with no nasty language which has permeated US produced films for some times..no MFers in the language, just an enjoyable entertaining story.

I don’t have TV so I can’t help you with “channels.” I got the disk from dvd.com. All three episodes are on a single disk.
Hanging, drawing, and quartering was the legal execution method for treason committed by commoners or minor nobles. The hanging, which started the festivities, was not unto death, but just to get your attention, as well as that of the enthusiastic crowd. The rest is not be discussed at the table. Or anywhere else for that matter.

There is a fine line between civilization and savagery. I know some people in the news that are overdue for the Kings Justice.

Ordered the DVD of "Gunpowder", only $5.00.
Added another DVD- "Robert the Bruce". Great story. No idea how well the movie was made.
Since these are DVDs, I can watch them on my large but ancient CRT TV in the room with a nice recliner chair near the woodstove. Hoping the aged DVD player can handle it.
One of these days I have to get a new TV. They upgrade so rapidly, I have trouble keeping up with them. I would like say 60 inches and a curved screen with added Smell-O-Vision.

We saw the Waters film with Smell-O-Vision at the theater many years ago. It isn't all that impressive. I still have a scratch and sniff card somewhere.
